Navi Mumbai: The Odia community in the city has reached out to extend help to the areas in Odisha that hve been hit by cyclone Fani, by collecting and transporting over 12,000 packaged drinking water bottles and food items. As we talk, more donations are pouring in.

The city has come together in such a time and the response received from the citizens in Navi Mumbai has been overwhelming. People from Mumbai and Thane too have been pouring in with help. The first batch of donations of 12,000 packaged drinking water bottles has already Odisha, to be distributed further to cyclone affected areas.

Another truckload of biscuit packs, water etc that are currently being stored at Kerala Bhavan, Vashi, will be sent off to Odisha soon.

Cyclone Fani has hit Odisha harder than the super cyclone that had hit Odisha in 1999. Commodity prices have risen, power supply has been disrupted, water has become scarce and has to be collected from hand pumps, road connectivity and mobile networks have been cut off, crops destroyed and much more. There has been devastation all around.

Amid such, for some reason, the Odisha Bhavan is not stocking donated goods in their premises.

For donations contact: 8080225444 / 9322223033 / 9892005199 or email odishareliefcentre@gmail.com

Summers made worse by frequent power cuts in Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai: The summers have been made unbearable for many as the city reels under frequent power cuts across several nodes. While power cuts are not unacceptable, the unscheduled cuts have not been well received by citizens.

The most affected areas have been Digha, Airoli, Turbhe, Ghansoli, Koparkhairane and Vashi in the Thane district. These nodes had witnessed power cuts during the nights owing to increase in power consumption. Pre-monsoon maintenance work has also been a reason for the power cuts in some places. For instance, Vashi had a power cut on Tuesday owing to maintenance work on the power lines.

In the Raigad district nodes like Uran, Kamothe and Panvel have been affected. For instance, in Uran, power supply has been made worse owing to other issues like open cables, damaged feeder boxes etc. residents believe that there has been a serious mismatch of demand and supply in the area.

In another incident on Tuesday, a supply line from 400 KV sub-station of Kharghar, supplying power to Kamothe, was down for maintenance from 10 am to 5pm, without any intimation to the residents.

In another incident on Tuesday, a supply line from 400 KV sub-station of Kharghar, supplying power to Kamothe, was down for maintenance from 10 am to 5pm, without any intimation to the residents.

Officials from MSEDCL assured that it was all owing to the pre-monsoon preparation work and even though alternate supply arrangement was being made at certain areas, there had been other issues in the supply system that needed to be worked upon on priority basis.

Further, they informed that all maintenance work was being carried out in a phase-wise manner and hence the inconvenience was limited to the area being worked upon on a given point of time.

Navi Mumbai / Panvel:  A team from CIDCO’s anti-encroachment team department had to return without which demolishing an illegal colony of chawls set up on a piece of land falling under the airport area. The reason for such return – angry villagers protesting for proper compensation although they did ot posses any legal documentation, like the 7/12 extract.

The drive was initiated to free a 32-acre piece of land in Chinchpada in Panvel. The team was lead was accompanied by 50 policemen but could do nothing as the protesting villagers blocked the team’s movement. Senior police officials handled the situation well. However, the protestors demanded that they be made aware of the actual situation by CIDCO officials.

Officials informed that the protesting villagers demanded a compensation although they were not in possession of 7/12 extract land record.

The land which was earlier allotted to Panvel Municipal Council (PMC) was later transferred to CIDCO by the revenue department in 2012. The villagers had encroached the land recently and some chawls had come up in the last couple of months. Though an eviction notice was issued the villagers ignored it.

Finally, officials decided to demolish the illegal hutments. However, the angry protestors forced them to postpone the demolition till next week.

Debris dumping killing Kamothe creek mangroves

by Staff Reporter May 3, 2019
written by Staff Reporter

Navi Mumbai / Kamothe / PCMC: Mangroves along the Kamothe creek are being killed every passing day by both, the debris mafia and private contractors alike. Moreover, there have been evidences of what residents believe, a sly effort to turn the area into a huge dumping yard. The surprising part – authorities don’t know anything yet, or do they?

For those who are new to the topic (we would hardly believe somebody would be), construction waste is being systematically dumped along the vast mangrove stretch running between sector 35 in Kamothe, and the Mansarovar station road.  The environment-crime (as we would like to call it) is being in progress since long under the nose of the authorities. While some residents believe that the authority is too careless, others believe they might be working hand in glove with the culprits. Why else, they question, the authority never knows about such incidents unless told?

Environmentalists inform that the agencies entrusted with the job of safeguarding the area, namely the forest department, CIDCO and PCMC have been ignoring the issue since long. The debris is being dumped by private contractors without any authority even raising a finger. On top of that, they even claim to be unaware of the fact that such a sort of crime is even happening. Really?

Officals from the forest department assured that they will first ensure that it falls well under their jurisdiction as they believe that it is CIDCO who is entrusted with the protection of the mangroves in the area. Officlas from CIDCO were surprised when notifed about such an incident and assured that they will look into the matter at the earliest.

Navi Mumbai / Turbhe: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken a great leap in sanitation by introducing high-pressure jet sprays to clean public toilets. The corporation recently directed the civic contractor in charge of the cleanliness and maintenance of public toilets in the city to implement it immediately.

As a result, a mobile toilet cleaning van containing a water tank and other related equipment was inaugurated recently in a function attended by the municipal commissioner, Ramswami N and ward officer, Angai Salunkhe, along with other senior officials.

Officials informed that the initiative came under the ongoing swachhata cleanliness drive, under which, the corporation decided to use the innovative water jet spray system to clean public toilets. Around 67 such toilets have been regularly cleaned with the help of the new spray system.

Talking about the feasibility of using such a system, officials shared that the jet spray took lesser amount of water for cleaning as compared to traditional way of cleaning.

Also, the NMMC officials recently held a mass awareness programmes for over 2,000 homes in Indiranagar area in Turbhe, as part of the swachhata drive. Through such programmes, the masses were made aware about the benefits of segregating wet and dry wastes to do their part in the city’s solid waste management.

The corporation intends to conduct many such mass awareness programmes in Ghansoli, Rabale, Airoli, and Dighe. And if all goes well, the het spray system will be introduced in other wards too.
