83 engineers transferred in major NMMC staff reshuffle

The civic chief has ordered a reshuffle in the engineering department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation

Navi Mumbai / CBD-Belapur: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation recently saw a major reshuffle in the engineering department. The move, directed by the municipal commissioner, Ramaswami N, is said to increase efficiency of the staff.

Officials informed that the civic chief took a calculated decision to transfer as many as 83 civic engineers to other wards and branches. Out of those transferred, there are eight deputy engineers, 13 assistant engineers and 30 sectional engineers of various specializations.

The move is said to bring newness to work and responsibilities and a smooth flow of expertise among the organization itself, all contributing to betterment of service.

All transferred have been asked to immediately take charge of their new postings and responsibilities.

NMMC claims to have completed 97% of the nullah cleaning work

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) claims to have completed 97% of city nullahs as per a recent inspection, carried out by the municipal commissioner, Ramaswami N. they inform that major sites like Vashi, Koperkhairane and Ghansoli had been swept clean before the given deadline.

The municipal commissioner informed that as 97% of the pre-monsoon cleaning had been done there would not be any flooding issues during the monsoons.

He further informed that the civic department was open to views and suggestions of the citizens regarding the quality of work done and the lacking, if any.

The sites inspected by the team of senior officials assisting the municipal commissioner were, the nullah near Arenja Corner, Vashi, Kopri petrol pump, and other mullahs around Koparkhairane and Ghansoli.

The civic body further informed about the planned provision of suction pumps at flood-prone areas during the monsoon. They would also be activating two toll-free helpline numbers soon – 1800222309 / 1800222310. These will allow citizens to communicate their concerns and problems with the civic body’s control room during the rainy season.

Further, the fire department will be priortising rain-related hazards for the safety of the citizens.

After Surat coaching class fire incident, NMMC gears up to inspect city coaching classes

Navi Mumbai: The recent fire incident that resulted in the death of 22 students in a coaching classes in Surat has got NMMC thinking about the safety of city students. The corporation has started inspecting coaching classes all around the city and is determined to finish off the job at the earliest.

The corporation reported that there were more than 800 coaching classes and private tutorials in the city and there was a high possibility that some of them must be ignoring safety measures.

NMMC’s fire chief, J C Mhatre, assured that the corporation was taking all necessary steps to ensure that no such incident ever happened here. Further, NMMC commissioner, Ramaswami N, had also directed the fire department to check all coaching classes for fire safety measures.

Earlier this year, the additional municipal commissioner, Ravindra Patil, had directed all registered schools within the city boundaries, including civic schools, to get a fire NOC.

The ongoing inspection includes checking of proper entry and exit check, ensuring they are not blocked by furniture or other things, installation of quality and safe electrical equipment and air-conditioning ducts.

NMMC to build 370 metre fenced cycle track in newly developed garden in Airoli

Navi Mumbai / Airoli: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will be doing city cyclists a great favour by building a fenced cycle track in Airoli. Cycling enthusiasts around the city have never been happier.

The corporation informed that the cycle track, touted to be the first of a kind, will be built in sectors 4 and 5 in Airoli and will be a 370 metres long and 3 metres wide track running along the existing jogging track in a garden.

This would be the third cycle track in the city with one located at Vashi between Shivaji Chowk and Sagar Vihar and another at Nerul’s Jewel of Navi Mumbai. What separates the new track is the factthat it will be built inside a newly developed garden and will be fenced. The other two run adjacent to the roads.

NMMC commissioner Ramaswami N, informed that the corporation would be building such cycle tracks in other nodes as well subject to the availability of land.

The NMMC is set to impact the carbon footprint of the city in a positive manner encouraged by the success of the ‘rent a cycle’ project launched in Nerul, which is also being implemented in other nodes.

The cycle track is being built at a cost of Rs 15 lakhs, from Thane MP, Rajan Vichare’s fund.

2014, 2017, and 2019 – CIDCO announces construction of animal hospital for the third, and hopefully, the last time

Navi Mumbai / Kalamboli / PMC: Animal lovers are filled with joy as CIDCO recently announced the construction of the ‘promised’ veterinary animal hospital in Kalamboli. While it is reason enough to celebrate, many are doubting the fulfillment of such promise. Why? Well, because CIDCO has made such an announcement three times in the last 5 years!

In 2014, CIDCO had boldly announced their decision to allot a half acre plot in Kalamboli to an animal rights NGO, People For Animals (PFA), to be used for building the city’s first animal hospital in a time span of two years. PFA, which was led by Maneka Gandhi, an animal activist and the Union minister, had started making plans for the hospital to be built at the cost of Rs 5 crore. The said hospital was supposed to be constructed and let open in 2017 but nothing of that sort happened. Time passed away and the plan never took off.

In 2017, the year that should have seen the opening of the animal hospital, CIDCO once again made the same announcement, informing citizens that the animal hospital would be constructed jointly by Tata Trusts and People for Animals (PFA). They informed that they would be building a 9,000 sq m animal-care facility with a holding capacity of 235. Ratan Tata, the chairman of Tata Trusts, had announced that they would be building a four-storey hospital that would cater to all domestic and farm animals with treatments and services at affordable rates. The unit was to provide an intensive care unit, recovery rooms and imaging and pathology services, comprehensive medical care including orthopaedics, dentistry and trauma surgery. The joint venture of Tata and PFA had also said to have collaborated with Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, for the design of the hospital and operational expertise. However, the plans never took off.

Once again, CIDCO has made an announcement about construction of the animal hospital that will be functional by 2021. The rest of the details are that Tata Trusts and PFA will be building it jointly at the cost of Rs 5 crore, on an 8,000 sq m in sector 16 in Kalamboli, next to D-mart. While People for Animals (PFA) is said to have paid for the land, the Tata Trusts will be constructing the building. They’ll also be providing medical equipment such as MRI and CT scan.

CIDCO proudly claims that the hospital would be the largest animal hospital in Navi Mumbai. The best part would be the fact that they would be providing free treatment to all types of animals. The costs would be borne on a 50-50 basis by CIDCO and PFA. However, a nominal fee would be charged during admission.

The hospital is said to be functional by 2021. Really?

Navi Mumbai / Panvel: The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra’s (CIDCO) anti-encroachment department cleared a 32 acre land marked as a core airport area. The land in Chinchpada, Panvel, had been encroached upon and illegal chawls had been built on it.

The land had first been allotted to the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) by the revenue department almost 5 decades ago and had been in an unused state ever since. It was late transferred to CIDCO in 2012 and had been marked a core area for the airport and had been unused until recently when squatters started building houses made of brick walls and asbestos sheet rooftops.

Almost a fortnight ago, the demolition squad had to return empty handed from the site owing to some stiff resistance and protests by villagers claiming right on the land. Officials had had returned after allowing the villagers three weeks’ time to produce the 7/12 extract or ownership rights of the land, to substantiate their claims.

However, the villagers failed to produce any such document and the anti-encroachment department sprang into action.

In all, 25 illegally houses were razed amid upon stiff resistance and stone pelting. The squad was able to carry out the demolition owing to the 150 police personnel who were deployed for security cover.

Though the work is just about done, villagers have been expressing their resentment saying that they never got the compensation that they were promised or supposed to receive from the authorities.

Officials informed that the compensation claim was being examined by a committee.

Kharghar sectors 26-40 residents demand a dedicated police station

Navi Mumbai / Kharghar / Taloja: Residents living between sectors 26 and 40 want a dedicated police station given the growth rate of these areas. Recently, a delegation of members of the Kharghar Taloja Citizens Welfare Association (KTC-WA) met the commissioner of police (CP) Sanjay Kumar in this regard and expressed the need to do so.

At least 23 housing societies have forwarded the request being concerned for the safety and security of all who reside in those sectors. The association has been active since some time and have been keeping a tab on all civic and criminal issues that have been plaguing these areas, especially around Taloja as there has been a general sense of insecurity due to various anti-social activities going on undeterred.

The commissioner has taken the request as priority and has asked the DCP (zone II) to discuss the possibilities further with the association and general residents of these sectors. He has also direct beat patrols to respond quckly. He has further asked societies in these sectors to keep a tab on visitors and maintain proper record books.

In the meanwhile, th commissioner has assured that given proper land for development or a designated spot, a police station will be set up at the earliest.

Navi Mumbai / Raigad: The Mangroves Protection Committee has barred dumping of debris on wetland sites in Uran and Raigad District, an order applauded by many in the city. On Thursday, the committee officially directed the NMSEZ to bring the order into immediate effect.

Apart from banning dumping till further inspection of the wetlands, officials have also ordered not to put a total stop on tidal water flow into the Panje wetland in Uran. Officials believe that these are signs of a positive and progressive administration that will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the wetlands and environment in general. Being visited by many birds, it would help a lot not stopping the tidal water flow.

The Raigad district administration has identified 131 wetland patches to be looked into and protected.

Apparently, the Raigad district collector’s office has stated that there were no records that about any sort of permission given to NMSEZ for landfilling. To add it up, the company has conveniently ignored paying the mandatory royalty to the revenue department for transporting soil dug from the hills.

There had been no activity in the 2,240 hectares acquired by NMSEZ, until now, when there has been some sort of movement taking place within the fenced area.

As for now, activists are happy as their efforts seem to have borne results in some manner.

No more traffic snarls at CBD-Belapur flyover as PWD completes concretisation work

Navi Mumbai / CBD-Belapur: The Public Works Department (PWD) has thrown open all three lanes at the CBD-Belapur flyover, much to the delight of motorists. The work had been underway since the month of March.

The flyover had been shut for concretization work after monsoons lashed out in full force last year creating craters and potholes at many places. Residents had expressed their ire with the shoddy quality of work then. A PIL was filed in the high court putting agencies into action and the repairs started. In about three months’ time, all the craters and potholes have been patched along the flyover and the highway.

The opening up of all the three lanes is meant to put an end to the endless traffic snarls at CBD-Belapur flyover that used to get extended till the Kharghar Flyover on busy days.

Forest department inspects mangroves along Sion-Panvel highway near Vashi toll plaza

Navi Mumbai / Vashi: A team comprising officials from the revenue and forest department inspected the mangroves running along the Sion-Panvel highway near the Vashi toll plaza. This comes after continuous complaints from environment activists and residents about the destruction of mangroves in the area. The inspection was carried out Monday 13, 2019.

A complaint filed by local organisations stated ing that the activities being carried out on a stretch from the Vashi toll plaza to Vashi gaon bus stop was causing tremendous damage to the mangroves in the area. The construction being carried out in the area and the resulting piles of debris had already damaged the mangroves to a great extent.

The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), mangrove monitoring committee, the forest department and Cidco had been notified about the ongoing activity.

The highway construction is also severely damaging the mangroves as can be seen. They have been extending their work to almost into the mangroves. The dumping of debris along the stretch to facilitate expansion of the highway is causing the depletion of the mangroves in the area.

The Thane district revenue team, Turbhe mandal and forest officials visited the area and examined the destruction. They have assured of taking up the matter with the PWD and NMMC. Also, the MCZMA has asked the Konkan divisional commissioner and the state chief conservator of forest to look into the issue immediately.

In the meanwhile, residents have pointed out that the municipal commissioner, Ramaswami N had promised to build a protective wall along the highway but has fenced the area with a low-level railing.
