Commercial services of metro stations between the Kharghar Central Park and Pendhar in Taloja, with five en route stations, to start first.

CIDCO confident of kick-starting Navi Mumbai Metro in December 2021

Navi Mumbai: The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has expressed confidence in the way work has progressed on the Navi Mumbai Metro Phase 1 ever since they signed up Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro), and expects to throw open a partial section of the metro Phase 1 line, for commercial services, by the end of December, 2021.

CIDCO officials informed that services between metro stations 7 and 11 (Central Park Metro Station in Kharghar and Pendhar Metro Station in Taloja) would become operational by December, 2021, and service between metro stations 1 and 6 (Belapur and Kharghar sector 14) would be readied for service by December 2022.

However, these are still tentative dates and are subject to certification by the Commissioner, Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

The Maha Metro (Engineers), appointed by CIDCO (Project Proponent), will be completing the remaining work in the stipulated time.

It may be noted here that the Navi Mumbai Metro work has been delayed a lot in the past.

Ever since the appointment if Maha Metro, things have been moving ahead at good pace. Recently, officials had also carried out a trial run on metro phase 1 line, which measures 11.1 kms, and has 11 en route stations between Belapur and Taloja.

The joint inspection carried out by high ranking officials of both CIDCO and Maha Metro, boosted their confidence in the work being carried out. Just after the visit, a team of 20 expert engineers of the Maha Metro set up a project office at the Taloja metro depot to carry out ground-level execution of work.

Belapur / Navi Mumbai: The commissioner of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), Abhijit Bangar, got himself vaccinated today, Wednesday, 3 February, 2021. The civic chief took the first shot of covid-19 vaccine early morning, at the Apollo Hospital, Belapur.

Talking on the occasion, a very enthusiastic Bangar made a public appeal for maximum participation of local residents in the covid-19 drive.

“I would like to assure all Navi Mumbai residents that the covid-19 vaccine is safe and everyone should get themselves registered and vaccinated at the earliest.” He said.

Bangar further appealed for complete adherence to three principles of health safety – wearing a mask in public areas, maintain proper social distance in crowded places and sanitizing or washing of hands as frequently as possible.

The NMMC has geared up and is working efficiently to vaccinate as many people as possible in the next couple of days.

The covid-19 vaccination drive, which was flagged off on 16th January, 2021, had covered doctors and other health care workers in the first phase, and frontline workers like the police department, government and municipality officials, security personnel etc. in the second phase.

The drive to vaccinated general public, namely those above 60 years and 45-year-old individuals with co-morbidity, was delayed a bit on 1st March, 2021, but since then, has cover a lot of ground.

Many people are getting their family members registered to be able to get them vaccinated at the earliest.

As per the latest count, till 3rd March, 2021, a total of 25265 people had been vaccinated in Navi Mumbai.

The civic chief visited all five markets – onion & potatoes, vegetable, fruits, spices and grains.

Vashi / Navi Mumbai: Considering the increasing number of covid-19 cases in the city, the commissioner of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), Abhijit Bangar, surprised the traders of the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), Vashi market, on Tuesday, 2 March, 2021. The civic chief wanted to pass on the message that the corporation was not taking it lightly and that protocols had to be followed without fail. The APMC markets have been hot spots for the spread of covid-19 owing to the huge footfall.

During the visit, Bangar inspected all the five markets – onion & potatoes, vegetable, fruits, spices and grains and interacted with traders and visitors alike.

The APMC markets that run through the day, late into the night and see a huge number of traders, farmers and local buyers. They have an estimated daily footfall of over 50,000 and hence have a high possibility of getting converted into another covid-19 hotspot.

Officials informed that there had been many instances where people were not wearing their masks in the right manner, and social distancing was also being given a miss.

The civic chief’s visit revealed the fact that there was rampant use of plastic bags, despite a ban on their use.

Bangar, was seemingly upset over the lack of action taken by the civic administrative officers. He has called for an immediate meeting with the board of directors to have further discussions and take preventive measures.

He also hinted at a possible lockdown, given the callousness of the administrative officers and the irresponsible behaviour of the people in general.

JNPT / Uran / Navi Mumbai: A huge smuggled consignment containing imported foreign cigarettes was seized at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) at Uran, by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), who was acting on a tip-off. The planned raid was carried out on Sunday, 28 February, 2021.

During the raid officials found several boxes carrying around 21, 60,000 branded foreign cigarettes worth Rs 4 crore.

The cigarette boxes did not have any printed warning on them as directed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare mandate, which states that cigarette boxes and all other tobacco products, should carry warning messages about health risks posed by such products.

Apparently, the cigarettes were smuggled to save the 100 per cent tax levied on imported cigarettes in the country.

In the past too, the DRI had seized another such huge consignment of illegally imported cigarettes in the month of January, seizing around 18 lakh foreign cigarettes that were being smuggled as ladies footwear.

The ferry services will connect Mumbai with Navi Mumbai and Thane. (Image used for representation)

Navi Mumbai / Mumbai: You will be able to take a ferry to Mumbai and ride along the cool waves on your way to work or back very soon. The state government has finalised commencement of ferry services between. Navi Mumbai and Mumbai, work on which has almost been completed.

Officials of Mumbai Port Trust shared that the idea of starting ferry services between the two cities is to cut down on rail and road traffic, which takes a toll on both people and environment. So, the waterway will help minimise traffic and also help citizens save on commuting time, which will also help significantly in increasing their productivity at work.

The starting point of the ferry services will be the Princess Dock, Mazgaon, Mumbai, with checkpoints in Vashi, Airoli, Nerul, Thane (Meeth Bunder) and the end point in Belapur.

The estimated travelling duration of the ferry between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai will be of one hour, give or take.

The waterway is being envisioned as a major mode of transportation in future between Navi Mumbai, Mumbai, and Thane.

Following next, plans for starting Ro-Ro and RoPax services between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai, on the same water route, are also in the final stages, and services shall commence soon.

What are Ro-Ro and RoPax services, planned between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai?

Ro-Ro ferry services (short for ‘Roll-on, Roll-off’) are used for transporting heavy equipment, trucks and small sized ships. The name is derived from the manner of loading and unloading of cargo, which is rolling in or out.

On the other hand, RoPax services are used for transporting passengers, private cars and commercial vehicles.

While the news about ferry services in Navi Mumbai, has got many excited, some residents feel that it will take a long time. The fact that plans for such services have been announced in the past too, in 2016, and nothing materialises, for whotsoever reasons.

Navi Mumbai Cyclothon 2021 postponed as covid-19 cases spike

by Staff Reporter February 26, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

The NMMC has postponed the cyclothon dates twice – 21 February and now 28 February, 2021, as a precaution amid rising cases of covid-19.

Navi Mumbai: The much anticipated “Navi Mumbai Cyclothon 2021” by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), has been cancelled citing rising covid-19 cases in the city. The large scale event was rescheduled for 28 February, 2021, after being postponed once on 21 February, and was believed to have attracted a huge number of participants from in and around the city.

The NMMC had planned the “Navi Mumbai Cyclothon 2021” as a community event for active participation of citizens, in matters of environment and climate. The event was being held under the banner of “Majhi Vasundahra”, or “My Earth” campaign, promoted by the Environment and Climate Change Ministry, Maharashtra.

However, considering the sudden spike in the number of covid-19 cases in this month (February), the NMMC thought wise to push the event further given the fact that it would draw in a lot of people.

Presently, up to 100 covid-19 positive cases are being reported daily and hence the NMMC is not taking any chances by organising a mass event.

As for now, the Navi Mumbai Cyclothon, 2021, has been postponed until further notice.

Rs. 50000 fine on marriage events violating covid-19 norms: NMMC

by Staff Reporter February 25, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

The NMMC has strictly ordered not to accommodate more than 50 people at marriage events and social gatherings.

Rs 50000 fine on marriage events violating covid-19 norms: NMMC
A maximum of 50 guests will be allowed at marriage or social events.

Navi Mumbai: In the wake of the growing number of covid-19 cases in the city, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued a circular outlining the guidelines to be followed at marriage functions and other social gathering events. The corporation has reiterated in the circular dated 25 Februaary, 2021, that the maximum number of people present at such occasions should not exceed more than 50 (fifty) at any given moment, for whatsoever reason.

The NMMC has come out very strongly about their stand against offenders violating any or all covid-19 norms at social events.

Officials shared that there has been an increase in the number of marriages and social events in Navi Mumbai in the last two months and there have been constant reports of violations of the much needed social distancing norms and preventive measures.

The sudden spike in the number of covid-19 cases in Navi Mumbai can also be attributed to such events in part, if not entirely.

Taking into consideration the present situation and the lack of responsibility shown by people at marriages and other such events, the NMMC has come out with a stringent policy to penalize all offenders heavily.

“Citizens should know that it is for their own good to follow all norms but because a select few are simply ignoring every rule, we find it necessary to levy heavy penalties to discourage them,” an official shared.

NMMC’s New covid-19 guidelines for marriages and social events in Navi Mumbai

  • A maximum of 50 (fifty) people allowed at marriage and social gatherings
  • Thermal scanning of all guests, at the entry of the venue, necessary
  • All guests to sanitise their hands before entering the venue
  • Social distancing to be maintained inside the hall or event venue
  • Except when eating, all guests to wear masks inside the venue

The NMMC has made it clear that in case any violation is reported or found, an FIR will be filed along with a fine of Rs. 50000 or more, on the banquet hall owners, lounge or venue owners, and event organisers, among others present or involved in the organising of the event.

The NMMC has made a clear statement that they won’t be lenient and would deal every case with the severity it deserves.

CIDCO and Maha Metro inspect Metro line 1, deploy 20 expert engineers

by Staff Reporter February 24, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

Both CIDCO and Maha Metro are looking forward to speedy completion of work on the Navi Mumbai Metro.

Belapur-Pendhar/Navi Mumbai/PCMC: The Metro Line 1 of the Navi Mumbai Metro, was recently visisted and inspected by officials of both the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and Maha Metro, to gauge the situation and amount of work remaining.

The team of officials was led by Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of CIDCO, and Brijesh Dixit, MD of Maha Metro, visiteed the Metro Line 1 on 23 February, 2021.

The Navi Mumbai Metro project promoted by CIDCO is consists of four elevated corridors connecting different nodes. Recently, a trial run of Metro line 1, which measures 11.1 kms was conducted successfully.

However, work on Navi Mumbai Metro had been very slow owing to the coronavirus pandemic and technical hurdles in 2020. As a result, work on stations 1 to 6 out of the 11 stations, had been delayed a lot.

In a bid to finish the work speedily on Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, CIDCO roped in Maha Metro as engineers for the project, owing to their track record excellent work on the Nagpur Metro phase 1 and Pune Metro’s line 1 & 2.

Maha Metro has now deployed a team of 20 expert engineers to execute work in the earliest possible time. CIDCO has allocated an office at the Taloja Depot for the team which has already started working on various strategies.

The tentative dates of commercial operations of the Navi Mumbai Metro are December, 2021, for line 7 to 11, and December, 2022, for line 1 to 6, subject to obtaining safety certification from Commissioner, Metro Rail Safety (CRMS).

CIDCO and Maha Metro are positive about the newly set deadlines and ensure citizens of full-fledged metro services by the end of December, 2022.
