NMMC may build 10 “Pet Corners” or “Legal Dog Pooping Stations”; Inaugurates first one in Vashi

Filled with sand (pits) and equipped with pooper-scoopers, garbage bags and bins, these pet corners will act as legal pooping corners for pet dogs and also help NMMC advocate their cleanliness initiatives for Swachh Survekshan 2022

Vashi / Navi Mumbai: City pet parents witnessed the opening of the first-ever “Pet Corner” at sector 29 in Vashi on Friday, 10th December 2021. The concept was visualised and successfully executed by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), as an integral part of their initiative to promote cleanliness in the city to be able to rank higher on the Swachh Survekshan platform.

Renowned singer Shankar Mahadevan, who happens to be a resident of Vashi, inaugurated the ‘Vashi Pet Corner’ in the presence of many civic officials including NMMC commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, additional municipal commissioner, Sujata Dole and others.

Just to make readers aware, Mahadevan also happens to be the brand ambassador of ‘Swachh Navi Mumbai’ initiative and has been keenly promoting various initiatives of the NMMC throughout the city.

Talking about NMMC’s innovative concept, Mahadevan said, “Navi Mumbai is already an open defecation-free (ODF) city, and the NMMC now aims at making it pet open defecation-free as well.”

Mahadevan is also a pet parent himself and had brought both of his dogs (golden retrievers) who could be seen trotting around happily.

“This could be the start of a city free of pet waste in the time that follows,” Mahadevan remarked.

The Vashi pet corner has a sand pit to allow pets to poop, pooper-scoopers to pick up the poop, garbage bags to collect the poop and bins to discard the poop bags.

What caught our eyes were some interesting paintings on the walls depicting pets and pet lovers.

The NMMC may have become the only corporation in the state or even the country (still checking facts) to have taken up such an innovative initiative of pet corners.

NMMC commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, shared, “There is a mixed crowd of pet pwners in the city; one picking up after their pets and the other simply ignoring their responsibility for any number of reasons, ruining footpaths, roads, public spaces. So, apart from penalising them, we have come up with an alternative to allow them to act responsibly. Now they will have a legal place to take their pets to poop.”

Apparently, the NMMC is planning to start such pet corners in 10 different locations across Navi Mumbai, with Vashi being the first one to have materialised. The numbers would increase further depending on the reception and viability of the concept.

Whatever the case, it is a one of a kind offering for pet parents in Vashi, and if other such pet corners do come about in the months that follow, then Navi Mumbai will be able to cut down on the dog poop situation on the streets to some extent.

Apart from being recognised as an Open Defecation-Free (ODF) city, Navi Mumbai has also received a “Water Plus” rating.

The NMMC is moving ahead positively and aggressively to improve its ranking further during the Swachh Survekshan 2022 survey.

Reader must be aware that another unique venture of the NMMC – the Vashi Dog Park situated inside the Veer Savarkar Udyan, in sector 8, Vashi, is nearing completion, and is about to be thrown open in the new year, possibly in January 2022.

LocalPressIn View:

Well, with “Pet Corners” and a “Dog Park” coming up soon, Navi Mumbai is surely going to turn a new leaf in being a pet friendly city.  However, what would really make the city stand out, would be an NMMC-run crash course for city residents in “loving animals”, to ease the tension between animal lovers and the opposition.

Short circuit may have caused fire at BMW Infinity Cars Service Center

by Staff Reporter December 10, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

The fire gutted 45 vehicles including BMWs and some other high-end cars and SUVs that were brought in for servicing or stored in the godown.

Turbhe / Navi Mumbai: The major fire that broke out in the service centre cum godown in Turbhe, may have been caused by a short circuit, fire officials said. On Tuesday morning a fire broke out at the Infinity cars service centre, a BMW service centre at Turbhe, somewhere around 5.30 am.

The fire, which is said to have started off on the first floor of the building, went on to burn down a major part of the entire structure, in a devastating seven hours that left the belonging in ashes.

Ten fire tenders, from Turbhe – MIDC, Vashi and Koperkhairane, were called in and it took them till 1 pm to finally douse the fire.

However, the damage had already been done, and what remained only seemed to be an attempt to stop the fire from damaging the structure further. As far as the vehicles and documents stored inside the building were concerned – everything was burnt to the ground.

Fire fighters present at the scene attributed the fire to a short circuit, though nothing was confirmed officially.

Luckily, there had been no casualties as the service centre was closed and empty.

The owners of the building were yet to ascertain and disclose the extent of financial loss incurred upon them owing to the fire but it will be huge.

NMMC to construct new medical college and super-speciality hospital in CBD-Belapur

by Staff Reporter December 8, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

The new civic medical college and hospital will be built on a 34,000 sq. mtrs plot priced at Rs. 107 crores, situated adjacent to the NMMC headquarters.

CBD-Belapur / Navi Mumbai: The city will soon be getting a government-run medical college and super-speciality hospital. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is in the process of securing a huge plot through the City and Industrial Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd. (CIDCO), which will be used for the purpose.

The plot, measuring 34,800 sq. mtrs is located in sector 15A of CBD-Belapur, right adjacent to the civic headquarters and is presently priced at Rs 107 crore, as per ongoing property rates in the area.

Apparently, the plot being allocated for the new CBD-Belapur NMMC hospital and medical college was originally marked for the development of either a public park or a museum. However, a civic hospital seemed greatly beneficial to the residents of Navi Mumbai.

Varun Shah, a resident of Nerul, shared, “Who cares about another park in the city – we already have plenty of parks like Nerul Wonders Park, and a museum is just not required. A government medical college imparting quality education and a civic hospital providing effective and affordable treatment to the poor, is what every city needs and we are no different.”

We spoke to some other Navi Mumbai residents as well, who seemed pretty excited about the news of getting a new government hospital in the city.

Khushbu Kothiyal, a Kharghar resident, shared, “The new civic hospital will be a boon for many residents who have to travel all the way to the Vashi NMMC hospital. It will save time and effort of many patients, their relatives and caretakers.”

For those who may be unaware, the Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had directed CIDCO to seriously consider building a medical college and government hospital in Navi Mumbai.

Taking the matter up as high priority, CIDCO wrote to the NMMC expressing their decision to hand over a plot to them.

As per the information provided by NMMC officials, the civic body was very enthusiastic about the proposal and had initiated the required process.

Navi Mumbai’s residents, as well as civic officials, have been at the receiving end during the pandemic owing to the lack of an advanced civic hospital in the city.

Namrata Gaikwad, a Ghansoli resident, shared, “The new super-speciality civic hospital will be of great help to the residents of Navi Mumbai, only if it provides advanced treatment and medicines at actual affordable prices. The civic authority needs to make effective treatment affordable for city residents.”

Kharghar to get new DMart store in sector 36 soon

by Staff Reporter December 4, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

The strategically located plot bought for the new DMart store, slated to come up in a few years, will cater to the entire Taloja area and beyond.

Kharghar / Panvel / Navi Mumbai:  The owners of the popular hypermarket retail chain DMart – Avenue Supermarts Limited,  have bought a huge land parcel in Kharghar to build another grand store in the node. This one will help them reach out to Taloja, owing  to its proximity to the plots located in sector 36 of Kharghar.

Two plots, measuring  1962 sqm and 2963 sqm were bought by the company at Rs 40.49 crores, through an e-auction held by CIDCO. A total of 20 plots were auctioned in Kharghar, Panvel, and Pushpak Nagar.

Avenue Supermarts Limited is said to have won two bids for a patch of two adjoining plots numbered 28 and 29, in sectore 36, Kharghar. The results were declared on the official site of CIDCO on 26th November 2021.

Both plots are residential-cum-commercial with 1.5 FSI

The plots can be used for constructing residential-cum-commercial complexes. The  1962.13 sqm plot had a base price of Rs 55,861 per sqm.,  and the 2963.64 sqm plot was based at at Rs. 68,557 per sqm. Avenue Supermarts Limited won both the bids as they made the highest bid of Rs 67,500 per sqm.

New DMart will be better situated to target the residents of Taloja and surrounding areas

Although there has been no official confirmation on the development plan, and whether it will be a residential as well as commercial project by the company, what’s obvious is that it will be a strategic location for the new DMart store, which will be able to drive in huge business from the Taloja node.

At present, residents of Taloja have to travel a long way to reach the DMart store at sector 15, near Gharkul.

The new DMart store, once constructed, will be a time saver for shoppers coming in from Taloja and other areas till Roadpali at one end and Dahisar Mori at another.

It will also drive in new shoppers who have been avoiding shopping at the existing store in Kharghar, owing to the distance and transportation hassles.

P.S. –There has been no official statement from Avenue Supermarts Limited regarding the development plan and we are simply speculating the obvious.

Unseasonal rains lash Navi Mumbai; Residents make merry

Kharghar / Navi Mumbai: The rain surprised everyone on Wednesday as it lashed incessantly across several coastal areas in the state of Maharashtra. Navi Mumbai received a good amount of rain and it was a day of relaxation for many as they enjoyed the cool weather.

As it started raining early morning on Wednesday 2nd December 2021, residents, especially travelling around for work felt at ease owing to the pleasant weather.

Mahesh Kharkar, an office goer, shared, “It has been pretty hot since a month or so and the sudden rains today were a pleasant surprise for all. The weather changed for all in a good way. Even though I had not carried any rain gear, it was good to travel around in the cool atmosphere.”

Kharkar was not alone to enjoy the goodness of the weather, many could be seen relaxing while travelling, even if it was only the cool weather.

Those at home enjoyed the weather the most as they simply relaxed enjoying a plate of bhajiyas with a cup of tea.

Suchi P, a Kharghar resident, shared, “It was raining the whole day and we had nothing much to do anyway, so we just prepared some hot bhajiyas to go with tea and simply sat at the window looking out at mountain and the rain.”

In Kharghar, many young adventurers went out for little hike on the Owe Hills, or a short stroll at the Owe Pond and the Taloja Jail Pond among other places.

Children had most of the fun as they were seen playing happily in the rain, jumping in puddles, with some playing football and other games.

The only trouble the rains caused was to people trying to order food from outside as food ordering apps – Swiggy and Zomato, were hit badly, and were down to more than 95 percent of their capacity, which only resumed the next day.

Rain hits services of Swiggy & Zomato in Kharghar

by Staff Reporter December 1, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

Only a few restaurants were accepting orders on both the food ordering Apps, and that too at heavy extra delivery charges, due to incessant rain in Kharghar.

Kharghar / Panvel / Navi Mumbai: Food delivery services in Kharghar were hit badly today due to rain falling continuously since morning. Hungry residents strugggled to order through both, Swiggy and Zomato apps, especially from the second half of the day.

Shubham V., a Kharghar resident, shared, “I tried ordering burgers from Swiggy but none of the restaurants were accepting orders at all. At that time, around 4 pm, they were only accepting orders for Domino;s Pizzas and maybe some other outlet. So, I tried ordering on Zomato, and it was the same.”

Almost all the restaurants in Kharghar were rejecting orders through Swigy and Zomato and there was an extra charge for delivery in the rain by those who did accept order.

Swiggy was charging an extra Rs. 17 delivery charge, while Zomato was hardly taking any orders at all. Some restaurants with their own deliver agents were even charging up to Rs. 25 extar for order below Rs. 125.

Apparently, both the apps were carrying out deliveries in the other nodes of Navi Mumbai. We could not confirm it from all the nodes though.

All we know is that residents of Kharghar and Taloja were sitting with their eyes glued to both these apps, waiting for them to start delivering.

P.S. At the time of posting this article, Swiggy had begun accepting orders for a handlful of restaurants, while Zomato had put up opening soon timers for some of the partner restaurants, with a majority of them still not accepting orders.

Vashi / Navi Mumbai: The much awaited dog park in Vashi’s Veer Savarkar Udyan in secor 8, could be thrown open early next year in January 2022, as 95 percent of construction work has been completed, with only a few modifications and footpath work remaining.

The bhoomi pujan for the Vashi dog park was held in the month of April 2021, and work was scheduled to be completed by the month of July 2021.

However, work was delayed by a few months for many reasons.

Divya V. Gaikwad, the real brains behind the project, clarifies, “There had been an initial delay in work owing to problems in the delivery of equipment and other materials being brought in from outside the state, and then stalling of work by heavy rains.”

In the last month, just after the rains finally bowed down, work on the dog park gained momentum and is nearing completion.

“We are glad to share that we have been able to make up for lost time and have successfully deployed all major equipment in the park. You can see all the new play equipment, covered up and waiting to be unveiled. Only a few modifications remain and are being taken care of,” Gaikwad informs.

The LocalPress.in team did visit the Vashi dog park and was excited to see all the neatly wrapped play equipment for dogs just sitting calmly, eagerly waiting for their furry friends to visit soon.

We hope that others will follow the example and come up with dog parks in other nodes of Navi Mumbai as well.
