Navi Mumbai ‘Mini Lockdown’ met with angry protests

Local shopkeepers in Kharghar, Kalamboli, Panvel, Seawoods and several other nodes protested angrily, even blocking police vans for ordering shutting down of all non-essential businesses.

Navi Mumbai ‘Mini Lockdown’ met with angry protests
Shop owners in Kharghar, Kalamboli and Seawoods, angrily protested against the ‘Mini Lockdown’.

Navi Mumbai: There were crowded protests against the ‘Mini Lockdown’ in both NMMC and PMC areas, on 6th April, 2021, as angry shopkeepers decided to go vocal when the police came about to announce shutting down of all shops and businesses except for essential services. The protesters resented the way the lockdown has been turned into a full-time lockdown for non-essential services.

Residents must be aware that there has been an unprecedented surge in the number of covid-19 cases and the Maharashtra government has brought restrictions into immediate effect in what is dubbed as the ‘Mini Lockdown’.

The lockdown has called for shutting down of all shops and business establishments till 30th April, 2021.

In Navi Mumbai too, the growing number of covid-19 cases led the administration to spring into action, ordering for the observance of the ‘Mini Lockdown’, which however, asked for shutting down of all shops and business that don’t deal in essential service.

This led to a high level of disagreement between the administration and shop owners in Navi Mumbai, as many gathered in angry protests against what they have called an ‘Inhumane Decision’ against local business owners.

Navi Mumbai shopkeepers and business owners have now been asking – “Who will feed our families during the lockdown?”

In Kharghar, angry shop owners gathered in huge numbers as the police van came around announcing closure of shops. They protested angrily and even blocked the police van that had been doing the rounds. It was after the intervention of Kharghar Senior Police Inspector Shatrughan Mali, that the angry protesters dispersed.

In Kalamboli, shop owners sat down in agitation in front of the ward office, demanding lifting of the lockdown.

In Seawoods too, many angry shop owners bluntly expressed their resentment and said that they would carry out daily business irrespective of what the administration had to say.

Many shop owners even questioned why small businesses were being targeted by the administration in Navi Mumbai even when crowded places like Dmart were allowed to conduct business as susual.

Some of the protestors even went on to say that they were being pushed to the point of taking drastic steps, like ending their lives, owing to the rash decisions taken by the administration.

Covid-19 or not, Navi Mumbai played Holi anyway

by Staff Reporter March 30, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

Citizens were found lost in festive revelling despite the threat of covid-19 and possibilities of yet another lockdown looming large.

Covid-19 or not, Navi Mumbai played Holi anyway
Many residents could be seen playing Holi in Navi Mumbai despite restrictions.

Navi Mumbai: Despite the continuous efforts and near pleading of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC), many indulged in Holi celebrations in ways that clearly violated all social distancing norms.

People could be seen moving around in groups, gathering at local hot spots, applying colours, hugging, eating and making merry.

Many residential societies were seen celebrating as usual within the premises and inside their swimming pools.

Youngsters could be seen riding their bikes in groups, visiting local hangout areas.

In all these instances, there was clear and visible violation of covid-19 norms with people not wearing masks or maintaining proper social distancing.

So, despite all the campaigning by the NMMC Commissioner Abhijit Bangar and PMC Commissioner Sudhakar Deshmukh, many simply chose to ignore all norms for their own merriment.

Maybe, the assurance of the availability of covid-19 vaccination drive has led to a level of over confidence or sheer ignorance of norms.

It may not come as a surprise if the number of covid-19 cases in Navi Mumbai witnessed a high jump post holi celebrations. Some people have asked for it!

Navi Mumbai: The DY Patil Sports Stadium in Nerul has been chosen as one of the three venues for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022.  The other two cities are Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar. The list was finalised on Friday, 26 March, 2021.

India will be hosting the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022, from 20 January – 6 February, 2022. The qualifiers will be held between 13 and 25 September, 2021, in centralised venues with the draw scheduled to be held on  27 May, 2021, at the AFC headquarters.

This will be the second time that India will be hosting the tournament ever since it’s inception in the year 1975. India had hosted the tournament once in the year 1979.

The current champions of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup are the Japanese women’s national football team, with the Chinese women’s national football team having won the tournament eight times, seven of which have been consecutive victories.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has expressed their utmost satisfaction over the venues chosen by the All India Football Federation and the LOC, and are confident that the stadiums selected for the tournament will only add to the magnificence of the games that will be played in them.

The stadiums chosen for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 are, the DY Patil Sports Stadium (Nerul, Navi Mumbai), EKA Arena by TransStadia (Ahmedabad) and the Kalinga Stadium (Bhubaneswar).

The AFC is confident that tournament will further the cause of women footballers in India and inspire many to pursue their passion for the game, which is already making steady and progressive strides.

The DY Patil Sports Stadium had already been in the picture globally for their spectacular presentation and handling of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, putting Navi Mumbai on the map for it’s ability to host an manage games of international repute and high magnitudes.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that the DY Patil Sports Stadium will once again be hosting the FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup in 2022.

No Holi celebrations this year: PMC and NMMC

by Staff Reporter March 25, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

As Navi Mumbai’s active Covid-19 cases are rising, both the municipal corporations have strictly ordered residents not to celebrate Holi publicly, and also to avoid personal celebrations, if possible.

No Holi celebrations this year: PMC and NMMC
Both PMc and NMMC have ordered Navi Mumbai residents not to play Holi as it is a very close contact festival.

Navi Mumbai: As expected, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) have ordered residents not to indulge in Holi celebrations publicly, during the Holika Dahan and Dhulivandan. The circulars came in based on the recent guidelines of the state government.

In a circular dated 24 March, 2021, the PMC has strictly directed residents to cooperate by not celebrating Holi publicly.

The NMMC has done the same in a circular also sent out on the same date, prohibiting Holi celebrations in Navi Mumbai.

The Commissioner of NMMC, Abhijit Bangar, expressed his concerns, “The number of active Covid-19 cases are scaling up every day, with as many as 400 cases on some days. It goes without saying that we need to avoid public celebrations like Holi, as there will be obvious violation of social distancing norm owing to the basic nature of the festival, where you apply colours. It is a close contact festival and hence needs to be avoided completely at all levels; public or personal. Residents should behave responsibly this Holi.”

The Panvel region has been facing a similar situation with rising number of covid-19 cases and hence all public celebrations have been prohibited.

PCMC Commissioner, Sudhakar Deshmukh, informed, “There are reports of up to 300 active covid-19 cases in our region on a daily basis, and involving in any public event or celebration, like Holi, will only make matters worse. Holi celebrations need to be strictly avoided this year. We appeal to the residents not to indulge in Holi celebrations for the general well-being of all.”

Both the PMC and the NMMC have warned residents of strict action if they are caught violating the orders.

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently issued a list of 10 primary schools that are being illegally run in Navi Mumbai. The corporation states that these schools have not obtained the approval of the state government and hence are illegal in all sense.

Kalamboli to get new air quality monitor, more to follow in two other nodes in Navi Mumbai, PMC area

by Staff Reporter March 12, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

A Right to Information (RTI) query by Waatavaran Foundation revealed that the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) had given a no objection certificate (NOC) to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to set up a continuous ambient air quality monitoring station (CAAQMS) in Kalamboli, Navi Mumbai.

Panvel / Navi Mumbai: The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has obtained a no objection certificate (NOC) from the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) for setting up a continuous ambient air quality monitoring station (CAAQMS) in Kalamboli. Soon, Kharghar and Taloja MIDC will be having one CAAQMS each.

The revelation came in after an RTI query by Waatavaran Foundation, on 8 March, found that the PMC had already given an NOC to MPCB for setting up a CAAQMS in Kalamboli, while clearance for other two nodes was being processing.

Bhagwan Keshbat, founder of Waatavaran Foundation, shared, “I think every aware individual knows about the level of pollution in the Kharghar-Taloja-Panvel belt, which is shockingly higher than that in Mumbai. The Taloja MIDC area is the hotspot, owing to the existing chemical units and their daily polluting emissions. On top of that, emissions from vehicles passing through the highway, the quarry and construction activity of buildings, are making it worse for the residents. We have been campaigning for clean air for all and have been actively seeking participation of all stakeholders to tackle the pollution crisis in the area.”

Also Read: Kharghar sectors 34, 35, 36 and 37 most polluted after Taloja area

Talking on the need for CAAQMS in the region, especially in the Kharghar-Taloja-Panvel belt, Keshbhat shared, “In the absence of CAAQMS in these areas, there is hardly and documented data to work out an action plan to curb the pollution. To take action, we first need well-documented numbers on a daily basis to take practical action. We had carried out two individual studies in the past, one by placing a small air monitoring machine in some areas with visibly high pollution, and two, by placing a “Billboard That Breathes” installation at Kharghar, that helped residents and even the administration get a real time reference of the high level of particulate matter (PM2.5) in the area. The results of both the studies had been alarming, and the administration had been concerned by the findings.”

Also Read: Kharghar’s “Billboard That Breathes” turning grey and black, two weeks before expected

Also Read: PCMC Mayor Dr Kavita Choutmol inaugurates “Billboard That Breathes” installation at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai

The data revealed the PM2.5 levels to be 101.12 microgramme per cubic metre (μg/m3), higher than the national safe standard of 60μg/m3, and the World Health Organization (WHO) standard of 25μg/m3.

The reports were sent to all stake holders like the PMC, MPCB and the state government for their perusal and they had assured of a practical action in the coming months.

Also Read: MLA Prashant Thakur visits “Billboard That Breathes” installation at Kharghar, calls for ownership by all stakeholders

The permission to set up a CAAQMS in Kalamboli just a month after the reports were sent to the administration indicates willingness to change the situation.

Navi Mumbai currently has four CAAQMS – Mahape, Airoli and Nerul (sectors 46 and 19A).

The addition of three more CAAQMS will help monitor Navi Mumbai from both districts – Thane and Raigad.

“We appreciate the step taken by the PMC and that of the MPCB, by initiating a process to at least study the levels of air pollution in the city. Once the air quality starts getting monitored on a daily basis, the administration will be able to carry out the necessary changes based on actual figures, something that they presently lack,” Keshbhat said.
