written by Staff Reporter

Navi Mumbai: Environmentalist have now sought the help of newly elected environment minister Aaditya Thackeray, in saving the environment and deploying an active green police force to take action against environment offenders.

Environment NGOs like NatConnect Foundation and Shri Ekvira Aai Pratishtan (SEAP) have requested Thackeray to declare Aarey greenery as forest, transferring it to the forest department, and also to move the metro car shed be another location.

They highlighted how mangroves and wetlands were being destroyed all across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and ecologically sensitive Uran area by Navi Mumbai SEZ, JNPT, JNPT SEZ, NHAI and many such projects and activities.

CM Uddhav Thackeray says no to centre’s plans for detention camp in Navi Mumbai

by Staff Reporter December 25, 2019
written by Staff Reporter

Navi Mumbai: Former CM Devendra Fadnavis, recently shared that the centre had showed keen interest in setting up a detention centre in Navi Mumbai, during his tenure. The revelation came just after PM Modi denied ever discussing NRC and the possibility of any such centres anytime in future. Fadnavis is said to have sought land from CIDCO in Navi Mumbai to set up a centre for illegal foreigners on the Centre’s directives. The idea was to accommodate foreigners living past their visa tenures till they could be deported back to their respective countries.

Whatever the case, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has assured that no such centres or camps will ever be set up in the state.

Why build an unwanted structure and waste money: Vashi residents ask NMMC

by Staff Reporter December 25, 2019
written by Staff Reporter

Navi Mumbai / Vashi: Residents of Vashi have been angered by the construction of an unwanted structure inside a civic garden in the locality. They claim that it is unwanted and merely being developed for the sake of money.

On Wednesday, several residents of Vashi carried out a protest march against a concrete structure coming up inside the Smt Meenatai Thackeray Municipal Garden, located at sector 17. Protestors claimed that a huge amount of money was being spent on constructing an air-conditioned room inside the civic garden, which was unnecessary and a complete waste of money.

Residents questioned why the NMMC was keen on building an air conditioned room in a garden, where people come to stroll and exercise in fresh air. They claimed that it was not being constructed for the locals as they could never demand something as silly as that.

The construction would further reduce public space in the garden, residents said.

Many of the residents bluntly claimed that it was nothing but another case of corruption at the official level.

NMMC municipal commissioner, AB Misal had given assurance to locals some time back that the construction inside the garden would be stalled. However, residents say that nothing has been done to ensure it’s stalling.

Bhendkal wetlands in Uran go under protection

by Staff Reporter December 22, 2019
written by Staff Reporter

Uran / Navi Mumbai: Activists in and around the city have been rejoicing in the state mangrove protection committee’s order to halt construction activity on the 165-acre Bhendkal wetland, in Uran. Also the Maharashtra state regulator has demanded immediate removal of debris from the creek area, a former part of the Navi Mumbai Special Economic Zone (NMSEZ).

On top of that, the Konkan Wetland Grievance Redressal Committee has directed the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) to protect the wetland and mangroves at Panje, the site of recent debris bumping and landfill.

Activists claim that Reliance is developing 4000 acres in Uran for the NMSEZ and hence there has been a rise in destruction of mangroves and wetlands in Pagote, Bhendkhal and Panje.

Navi Mumbai / Uran: The wetlands in Panje area of Uran are once again being exploited for dumping of debris. The wetlands is said to be one of the last surviving eco-sensitive areas in MMR region.

Locals and environment activists informed the local authorities about the situation and how the wetlands were being used again for dumping. The activities were stalled following such complaint.

Many environment groups had written to the then Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, demanding that the Panje wetlands be declared as a bird sanctuary. Also, the Mangrove Conservation and Monitoring Committee appointed by Bombay high court-appointed had recently told the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra LTD. (CIDCO)  to protect the wetlands.

However, it comes as a disappointing surprise that CIDCO has failed to keep a check on the unauthorised dumping of debris in the wetlands. Ironically, this continues even after the declaration of the wetlands as a holding pond for flood control mechanism by CIDCO. In November, the High Court had explicitly instructed CIDCO to maintain the Panje as wetlands as it had all the features of a wetland, even though it didn’t figure in as a wetland.

Also, as the Panje and Karanja wetlands came under CRZ-1 as per the affidavit submitted by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), any construction had to first have the clearance of the MCZMA.

Activists informed that the dumping had been going on in Bokadvira village and on a very large scale.

If you recall, CIDCO has leased out a part of the Panje holding pond to the NMSEZ.

CIDCO sells 10 plots in Navi Mumbai, collects Rs 386 crore

Navi Mumbai: The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra LTD. (CIDCO) successfully sold 10 prime plots in various locations of Navi Mumbai for Rs 386 crore. This comes a pleasant surprise for many given the present real estate scenario of the country.

CIDCO had put up for sale plots from across Airoli, Vashi, Kharghar and New Panvel (West) for both residential and commercial development.

In the first week of December, the development authority had successfully sold three plots in Airoli and two plots in Vashi for Rs 229 crore. The surprising part is that they were sold at almost four times higher than the reserved price.

On Tuesday they were able to sell the remaining five plots for Rs 157 crore, once again, at double the base price of the plots.

The winner of the first auction was Ahmedabad-based Shreenathji Organisers who won the bid for two plots, while the remaining three plots were bagged by Pacific Properties, Avenue Supermarts and Narayani Trexim respectively.

The second auction saw the sale of one plot in Kharghar, four in New Panvel (W) to Vishwakarma Bhagyodaya Aarsh Ventures, Millennium Infra, Olive Enterprises and Millennium Realtors, respectively.

Sanpada youth assaulted for feeding stray dogs

Navi Mumbai / Sanpada: A group of people threatened and later assaulted a Sanpada based youth for feeding stray dogs living around the locality. The incident has enraged many animal activists and dog lovers.

The youth, Vedaunsh Pradeep, aged 31, is a singer and guitar tutor by profession and dog lover. He has been regularly feeding dogs in and around the posh vicinity of Millennium Towers much to the ire of many who don’t appreciate his generous act and keep threatening him from time to time.

However, on the night of December 6, he was accosted, verbally abused and even hit by some locals who seemed to have lost it over Pradeep’s compassion for the dogs.

Pradeep had to run for safety while also ensuring that he got the incident captured as evidence of the assault on his mobile phone. He later uploaded it on YouTube.

He lodged a non-cognizable complaint (NC) at Sanpada police station immediately.

Many animal lovers and activists have expressed their anger over the incident the ignorance of some people who show no concern or regard for the lives of animals and even the Constitution of India that tells us to show compassion for all living beings.

In the meanwhile, a case has been registered under the IPC sections 503 and 56 and the police have ensured that they would be inquiring further into the matter.
