Uran’s Panje wetlands once again under debris

Navi Mumbai / Uran: The wetlands in Panje area of Uran are once again being exploited for dumping of debris. The wetlands is said to be one of the last surviving eco-sensitive areas in MMR region.

Locals and environment activists informed the local authorities about the situation and how the wetlands were being used again for dumping. The activities were stalled following such complaint.

Many environment groups had written to the then Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, demanding that the Panje wetlands be declared as a bird sanctuary. Also, the Mangrove Conservation and Monitoring Committee appointed by Bombay high court-appointed had recently told the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra LTD. (CIDCO)  to protect the wetlands.

However, it comes as a disappointing surprise that CIDCO has failed to keep a check on the unauthorised dumping of debris in the wetlands. Ironically, this continues even after the declaration of the wetlands as a holding pond for flood control mechanism by CIDCO. In November, the High Court had explicitly instructed CIDCO to maintain the Panje as wetlands as it had all the features of a wetland, even though it didn’t figure in as a wetland.

Also, as the Panje and Karanja wetlands came under CRZ-1 as per the affidavit submitted by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), any construction had to first have the clearance of the MCZMA.

Activists informed that the dumping had been going on in Bokadvira village and on a very large scale.

If you recall, CIDCO has leased out a part of the Panje holding pond to the NMSEZ.

CIDCO sells 10 plots in Navi Mumbai, collects Rs 386 crore

Navi Mumbai: The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra LTD. (CIDCO) successfully sold 10 prime plots in various locations of Navi Mumbai for Rs 386 crore. This comes a pleasant surprise for many given the present real estate scenario of the country.

CIDCO had put up for sale plots from across Airoli, Vashi, Kharghar and New Panvel (West) for both residential and commercial development.

In the first week of December, the development authority had successfully sold three plots in Airoli and two plots in Vashi for Rs 229 crore. The surprising part is that they were sold at almost four times higher than the reserved price.

On Tuesday they were able to sell the remaining five plots for Rs 157 crore, once again, at double the base price of the plots.

The winner of the first auction was Ahmedabad-based Shreenathji Organisers who won the bid for two plots, while the remaining three plots were bagged by Pacific Properties, Avenue Supermarts and Narayani Trexim respectively.

The second auction saw the sale of one plot in Kharghar, four in New Panvel (W) to Vishwakarma Bhagyodaya Aarsh Ventures, Millennium Infra, Olive Enterprises and Millennium Realtors, respectively.

Sanpada youth assaulted for feeding stray dogs

Navi Mumbai / Sanpada: A group of people threatened and later assaulted a Sanpada based youth for feeding stray dogs living around the locality. The incident has enraged many animal activists and dog lovers.

The youth, Vedaunsh Pradeep, aged 31, is a singer and guitar tutor by profession and dog lover. He has been regularly feeding dogs in and around the posh vicinity of Millennium Towers much to the ire of many who don’t appreciate his generous act and keep threatening him from time to time.

However, on the night of December 6, he was accosted, verbally abused and even hit by some locals who seemed to have lost it over Pradeep’s compassion for the dogs.

Pradeep had to run for safety while also ensuring that he got the incident captured as evidence of the assault on his mobile phone. He later uploaded it on YouTube.

He lodged a non-cognizable complaint (NC) at Sanpada police station immediately.

Many animal lovers and activists have expressed their anger over the incident the ignorance of some people who show no concern or regard for the lives of animals and even the Constitution of India that tells us to show compassion for all living beings.

In the meanwhile, a case has been registered under the IPC sections 503 and 56 and the police have ensured that they would be inquiring further into the matter.

Train derailment at Roha-Diva route averted by alert keyman

Roha-Diva: A possible train derailment incident was averted on the Roha-Diva route today owing to the quick thinking of an alert keyman belonging to the Central Railway.

Vikram Samdhan, the keyman, was on a routine patrol along the tracks on the route when he spotted a fractured track. Without losing any time, he first placed a detonator at a distance of 600 metres from the rail fracture as per the railway guidelines. He then started waving a red flag to signal the driver of an oncoming train that was running at high speed.

Thanks to the quick thinking and effort of Samdhan, the motorman of the oncoming train was able to halt the train in time and at good distance.

Central Railway’s CPRO Shivaji Sutar informed that the keyman has been applauded for his act and will be rewarded soon.

The railway authority will look into the cause of the fracture to ascertain whether it was owing to natural wear and tear or an act of miscreants removing fish plates to be sold off.

Navi Mumbai International Airport’s 2020 deadline likely to extend as PAPs refuse to relocate again

by Staff Reporter December 5, 2019
written by Staff Reporter

Earlier talks with CIDCO and the December 15 deadline to relocate seems to have failed to convince villagers of ten villages marked for the Greenfield international airport

Navi Mumbai International Airport’s 2020 deadline likely to extend as PAPs refuse to relocate again

Navi Mumbai / Ulwe: The Navi Mumbai International Airport is likely to fail to meet the deadline as the project affected people (PAP) of the 10 remaining villages yet to vacate seem to have come to a disagreement with the unavailibity of amenities and basic provisions at the relocation site. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is yet to provide basic amenities at the site, they complained.

Earlier, officials had informed about a mutual agreement that was made between them and the villagers to vacate the villages by December 15 and everything seemed to be going as planned.

However, villagers have complained about the absence of even basic amenities at the relocation site and have determined themselves not to relocate until all amenities were made available. They further want CIDCO to meet all their community as well as individual demands.

The leader of the PAP, Rajaram Patil, has also written to the newly appointed Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray, hoping that the new governance would look into the matter at the earliest and pressurize CIDCO to meets all their demands and make all amenities available before relocating.

The villagers shared that taking into account the reputation of CIDCO when dealing with the PAPs in the past, it was in their best interests to ensure that the development authority fulfilled all promises before taking the land into possession. They fear that once the land is vacated, the authority will not fulfil the promises made.

While all this goes on, construction in the airport land has picked up pace and works like cutting down the Ulwe hillock, changing the course of Ulwe river, levelling of the marshy land etc. are nearing completion. The work on terminals and the runway too has commenced. Now, CIDCO needs to relocate the villages to speed up work to be able to meet the given deadline.

Also, three villages are in need to be relocated owing to the onslaught of monsoon earlier this year.

To make matters worse, the association of villages relocated earlier have pledged their support to these villages accusing CIDCO of falling back on their promises.

Apparently, apart from no practical infrastructure in place at the relocation site, CIDCO has failed to provide the assured rent and construction costs as promised when agreeing to most of their demands.

The PAPs have been irked by CIDCO’s disinterest in fulfilling all the demands made by all the villagers affected by the Navi Mumbai International Airport project.

Considering the fact that it would take further time it would be needles to mention that the airport project won’t be able to meet the December 2020 deadline and even if it does then the quality of work would get compromised owing to lack of time.

Villagers of 10 remaining Navi Mumbai airport villages to relocate before December 15

Navi Mumbai / Ulwe: The 10 remaining villages in Ulwe marked for the Navi Mumbai International Airport that still remain occupied have been given an extension till December 15, 2019. Also, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (Pvt) Ltd (NMIAL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) will have to complete the project by the end of 2021. The City and Industrial Development Authority Corporation (CIDCO) bears the responsibility of vacating the villages being the nodal airport development authority. The relocation deadline and compensation benefit has been extended till December 15 with the belief that villagers of the remaining 10 core villages will see reason to abide. Just to recap, the relocation had been delayed owing to discussions over the demands of the villagers. Apparently, the villagers had met the MD of CIDCO on November 26 and their demands had been met. As per officials, local politicians and representatives of the region have been able to convince the villagers to the 22% compensation scheme and the benefits involved. As decided for now, villagers vacating their houses by December 15 will also be given the enhanced Rs 1,500 per sq ft aid for building new homes and 18-month rental. Ex-Uran Sena MLA, Manohar Bhoir will be visiting Ulwe to address pending demands and submit a report. Many assert that the demands were accepted as the new government took charge and priortised to sail off the Rs. 1600 crore Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The Kharghar sector 35 skyline as seen across the open grounds near Central Park!

I was just driving around in Kharghar and came across this magnificent skyline of sector 35. The clouds seemed to have adorned the concrete for their own pleasure or for the pleasure of those who wished to see them and had the time to do so!
