The innovative plogging activity aims to encourage residents to willingly participate in cleanliness activities on grass root levels, during Swachh Survekshan 2022.

Vashi / Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has once again thought out of the box to engage local residents with all planned cleanliness activities for Swachh Survekshan 2022. The civic body hosted their first ever ‘Plog Run’ in Vashi recently, in a bid to draw in participation of local residents, in making the city cleaner and their lives healthier.

From the number of residents who showed up for the “Plogging” or “Plog Run” event at Vashi, it was evident that the endeavour was worth the effort.

More than two hundred people had enthusiastically participated in the plog run which was held along a 1 Km stretch between sectors 3 and 9 in Vashi. The volunteers included students and teachers of LCF Foundation and Khaki Academy (Police Recruitment Training Centre).

All present took a collective oath to ensure that the use of plastic was minimised in the city in every possible manner.

It was a sight worth watching as eager residents picked up plastic waste as they jogged along the way.

An enormous pile of 210 Kg of plastic waste was collected during the “Plog Run”, which was a huge success in itself.

Participants during the oath ceremony at the Vashi Plog Run

NMMC commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, shared enthusiastically, “Plog Run or Plogging, is a great way to clean the environment as well as to exercise. The regular bending and stretching for picking up waste materials activates all the body parts and at the same time, ensures cleanliness around.”

The civic chief was confident of the long term benefits of the plogging activity and also informed about his plans to conduct it regularly.

“Such activities tend to promote the significance of good health and a clean environment. We will be holding a plogging activity at least once every week in different nodes of the city.

As part of the Swachh Survekshan 2022 the NMMC has also invited budding short film makers and musicians from all across Navi Mumbai to produce fresh and original content to be used for a special event on 30th December 2021.

Navi Mumbai Christians prepare for mass before midnight this Christmas Eve

by Staff Reporter December 24, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

As per state government’s instructions, 10 pm is the deadline set for midnight mass this Christmas and that too, only for 50 percent worshippers at a time.

Navi Mumbai: Christians in the city are preparing to participate in the yearly midnight mass a little early today, as per the instructions of the state government, in the wake of the omicron threat. So, the 12 am mass will be held two hours earlier, at 10 pm, in all churches in Navi Mumbai.

Tiana D’souza, a Kharghar resident, says, “We are having mixed feelings right now. At one hand, we are sad that the annual Christmas event will be nothing like it used to be, but on the other hand, we also know that it is necessary, given the growing threat of omicron, slowly gripping the city.”

It is likely that some of the churches would be taking in at least two batches of 50 percent of the capacity, to be able to accommodate all their congregators before the deadline of 10 pm.

In Kharghar, some of the churches have called congregators as early as 8.30 pm for the mass.

Surprisingly, this Christmas, congregators in many churches in Navi Mumbai and Mumbai have been asked to register themselves for the midnight mass in advance. In most of the churches, attendance is only by invitation.

In most of the places, elders above 60 years and children below 10 years have been skipped from the invitations.

Similarly, the New Year’s Eve mass will also be held in batches before 10 pm, as per government directives.

LocalPress.in tried connecting with both the municipal corporations but of late, corresponding with the civic bodies has become a herculean task. So, whatever we have written here is from sources other than the NMMC and PMC.

Funfair at Taloja amid all the talk about Omicron

by Staff Reporter December 18, 2021

The fair has been active since a week and has been attracting hundreds of Taloja and Kharghar residents.

Taloja / Panvel / Navi Mumbai: While the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been trying everything to tackle the threat of Omicron, they have been missing on many violations happening around in the region.

For instance, there is an active fair on an open ground in Taloja phase 1 since last week, which has been attracting a good crowd of local residents of Taloja, Kharghar and even distant villages towards Mumbra.

Deepak Prajapati, a Taloja resident, shares, “It is surprising to see a fair during a time when we are facing a new threat from the omicron variant. How can the authorities miss such events? These are clear violations of the pandemic protocol, if they still have any.”

Residents are concerned by the number of people visiting the fair every day.

Shubham Vishwakarma, another resident says, “I see a lot of people gathered at the fair every day on my way home from office. I am surprised at the fact that the authority has not noticed a mass gathering event that has been active for more than a week.”

Many residents question the awareness of the local administration.

“This is ridiculous. All pandemic norms have been ignored blatantly ever since the vaccination drives gathered momentum, and it seems like the administration is either unaware or is simply not bothered anymore,” an angry resident says.

The fair has been drawing in families with children and remains crowded during the later hours of the evening.

“Every evening families visit the fair and there is hardly anyone wearing a mask or following other protocols. It is just like it used to be before the pandemic. This portrays a very sad picture of the efforts of the administration and on top of all, the irresponsible behaviour of local residents who keep visiting such places for a little bit of fun.” Prajapati adds.

Kharghar fire brigade rescues kitten stranded on 12th floor ledge

The little kitten was being pecked by several birds, was hurt, scared and crying out for help.

Kharghar fire brigade rescues kitten stranded on 12th floor ledge

Kharghar / Panvel / Navi Mumbai: The Kharghar fire brigade has been doing a commendable job at rescuing stranded animals in the area. From rescuing street dogs, cats and birds, they have been at the beck and call of people calling in for animal rescues.

On Thursday, 16 December 2021, the Kharghar (CIDCO) fire station answered a frantic call of a resident of Swapnapoorti CHS in sector 36, Kharghar, informing them about a stray kitten stranded on a ledge situated on the 12th floor of L-23, in the mass housing society.

The resident had heard cries of a kitten and after some effort, had found the little animal sitting helplessly, on a ledge of the 12th floor of his building. Many others had gathered around to help but to no avail.

“We tried a lot to get the kitten off the ledge but it was impossible for us to reach out to her owing to the distance, and the fear of her falling off the ledge,” said one of the local residents.

When individual efforts failed to bear results, the fire department was called in.

“It was clear that we needed experts, so we called the fire brigade and they wasted no time in reaching our society,” another resident said.

Once the fire fighters figured out the scenario, they used a hydraulic ladder, also called a Bronto skylift, to reach the kitten.

“Reaching the kitten was not the only thing to be done as the animal was scared, and clueless about everything. Then there was always a chance of it getting scared even further, and falling off trying to get away from us,” said one of the fire fighters.

However, the fire fighters proceeded with caution and after a long time of consoling and taming, finally got hold of it and brought it back to safety.

It took around two hours of patient efforts to successfully rescue the kitten from the ledge.

More than a hundred residents had gathered to watch the kitten being rescued and waited with baited breaths as the fire fighters brought her to ground level.

The crowd erupted with joy as the kitten touched ground and simply ran away to her normal life.

Of all the people gathered at the spot, children were the happiest.

“The fire fighters are the super heroes for the stray animals in Kharghar. They are awesome,” said many of the little ones in joy.

Recently, the Kharghar fire brigade had rescued a stray puppy after it had slipped inside an open gutter in sector 35 I, Kharghar.

The prompt fire fighters at the Kharghar fire station have been praised a lot for their animal rescues in the node recently.

Our (LocalPress.in) View:

The fire fighters of the Kharghar fire brigade have actually been very animal friendly in recent times. Frankly, they have been all around the node, rescuing helpless animals. We have seen them in action ourselves and cannot help repeat what the children had to say about them – they are the super heroes for stray animals.

Vashi residents thrilled by NMMC’s pet corner; wish for many more

by Staff Reporter December 14, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

While pet parents have lauded the civic body’s initiative, they say that many such pet corners will be needed to make Navi Mumbai an Open Pet Defecation-free city.

Vashi residents thrilled by NMMC’s pet corner; wish for many more
The sand pit at the newly inaugurated pet corner in sector 29, Vashi

Vashi / Navi Mumbai: Vashi pet parents, especially those living in sector 28 and 29, are very appreciative of the innovative ‘Pet Corner’ concept of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). It is a one of kind offering, and could hold the key to the dog poop problem in the city.

Trupti Jambhulkar, a pet parent, shared, “The NMMC is trying everything innovative to make our city stand out from the rest and the pet corner in sector 29 is an example of their willingness to think out of the box. The provision of a legal poop station for pet dogs in the area should encourage pet parents to use the facility and avoid road sides, corners and vacant spots.”

Other pet parents were happy about the convenience that the pet corners will provide to many.

Ravi Poojari, another pet parent, shared, “I find it very labourious sometimes when I take my pet dog out to poop as picking up from the road and then packing it up in a bag that I have to carry along and then disposing it in the nearest bin, is all too daunting at times, especially when I am back just from office. The pet corner will help people like me a lot as it has everything, a pit to poop, bags and bins. So it will be very convenient.”

Rupali Shah, a resident of sector 14, Vashi, shared, “The concept is amazing but will only work efficiently if we have at least one pet corner in each sectors of all nodes in Navi Mumbai. The distance it takes for you to take your pet to the pet corner will be a decisive factor. It will be impossible for someone living in, say, sector 14, to walk all the way to the pet corner in sector 29.  We will need many more of such pooping stations to fulfil the objective.”

Many pet parents have also been eagerly waiting for the Vashi Dog Park at Veer Savarkar Udyan in sector 9, to be officially inaugurated.

Also read: Vashi Dog Park likely to open in January 2022, after completion of pending work

Suresh P, a resident of sector 9, Vashi, shared, “The NMMC has also been developing the first ever dog park in the city, so it goes without saying that our corporation deserves appreciation for their innovative endeavours. We are expecting the dog park to open by January 2022.”

Whatever the perspective, all pet parents have been happy about the efforts that the NMMC is making to help pet parents in the city.

Vashi / Navi Mumbai: City pet parents witnessed the opening of the first-ever “Pet Corner” at sector 29 in Vashi on Friday, 10th December 2021. The concept was visualised and successfully executed by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), as an integral part of their initiative to promote cleanliness in the city to be able to rank higher on the Swachh Survekshan platform.

Renowned singer Shankar Mahadevan, who happens to be a resident of Vashi, inaugurated the ‘Vashi Pet Corner’ in the presence of many civic officials including NMMC commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, additional municipal commissioner, Sujata Dole and others.

Just to make readers aware, Mahadevan also happens to be the brand ambassador of ‘Swachh Navi Mumbai’ initiative and has been keenly promoting various initiatives of the NMMC throughout the city.

Talking about NMMC’s innovative concept, Mahadevan said, “Navi Mumbai is already an open defecation-free (ODF) city, and the NMMC now aims at making it pet open defecation-free as well.”

Mahadevan is also a pet parent himself and had brought both of his dogs (golden retrievers) who could be seen trotting around happily.

“This could be the start of a city free of pet waste in the time that follows,” Mahadevan remarked.

The Vashi pet corner has a sand pit to allow pets to poop, pooper-scoopers to pick up the poop, garbage bags to collect the poop and bins to discard the poop bags.

What caught our eyes were some interesting paintings on the walls depicting pets and pet lovers.

The NMMC may have become the only corporation in the state or even the country (still checking facts) to have taken up such an innovative initiative of pet corners.

NMMC commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, shared, “There is a mixed crowd of pet pwners in the city; one picking up after their pets and the other simply ignoring their responsibility for any number of reasons, ruining footpaths, roads, public spaces. So, apart from penalising them, we have come up with an alternative to allow them to act responsibly. Now they will have a legal place to take their pets to poop.”

Apparently, the NMMC is planning to start such pet corners in 10 different locations across Navi Mumbai, with Vashi being the first one to have materialised. The numbers would increase further depending on the reception and viability of the concept.

Whatever the case, it is a one of a kind offering for pet parents in Vashi, and if other such pet corners do come about in the months that follow, then Navi Mumbai will be able to cut down on the dog poop situation on the streets to some extent.

Apart from being recognised as an Open Defecation-Free (ODF) city, Navi Mumbai has also received a “Water Plus” rating.

The NMMC is moving ahead positively and aggressively to improve its ranking further during the Swachh Survekshan 2022 survey.

Reader must be aware that another unique venture of the NMMC – the Vashi Dog Park situated inside the Veer Savarkar Udyan, in sector 8, Vashi, is nearing completion, and is about to be thrown open in the new year, possibly in January 2022.

Also read: Vashi Dog Park likely to open in January 2022, after completion of pending work

LocalPressIn View:

Well, with “Pet Corners” and a “Dog Park” coming up soon, Navi Mumbai is surely going to turn a new leaf in being a pet friendly city.  However, what would really make the city stand out, would be an NMMC-run crash course for city residents in “loving animals”, to ease the tension between animal lovers and the opposition.

The fire, which is said to have started off on the first floor of the building, went on to burn down a major part of the entire structure, in a devastating seven hours that left the belonging in ashes.

Ten fire tenders, from Turbhe – MIDC, Vashi and Koperkhairane, were called in and it took them till 1 pm to finally douse the fire.

However, the damage had already been done, and what remained only seemed to be an attempt to stop the fire from damaging the structure further. As far as the vehicles and documents stored inside the building were concerned – everything was burnt to the ground.

Fire fighters present at the scene attributed the fire to a short circuit, though nothing was confirmed officially.

Luckily, there had been no casualties as the service centre was closed and empty.

The owners of the building were yet to ascertain and disclose the extent of financial loss incurred upon them owing to the fire but it will be huge.
