Navi Mumbai to get three more police stations soon

by Staff Reporter February 12, 2023
written by Staff Reporter

The three police stations have been proposed for the NMIA area, Ulwe and Airoli nodes

Taking into consideration the ever-expanding city of Navi Mumbai, and the influx of people settling down, the Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate has proposed a ‘Circle-3’ that will include the Nerul, CBD, NRI, Ulwe, Kharghar, Kamothe, Kalamboli and Taloja police stations.

The Commissionerate has also proposed an independent ‘airport police station’ purely dedicated to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Similarly, one station each has been proposed for the Airoli and Ulwe divisions.

Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner, Milind Bharambe informed that a proposal outlining the need, feasibility and other important factors had already been sent to the state government for approval.

For those who are unaware, the Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate, heads two zones – Zone 1, which includes 10 police stations between Digha to CBD-Belapur, and Zone 2, which includes 10 police stations between Kharghar-Panvel and Uran. The proposed police stations at NMIA, Ulwe and Airoli., once sanctioned, will be included under Zone 2.

Also, plans are afoot to include two upcoming localities under CIDCO’s jurisdiction, Rasayani and Khalapur, in the Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate.

NMMC’s ‘Waste to Best’ competition is underway

by Staff Reporter February 11, 2023
written by Staff Reporter

Students from all civic schools in Navi Mumbai are competing

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) kicked off their ‘Waste to Best’ interschool competition on 9 February 2023, to help engage young students in the city (in all civic schools) and encourage them to come up with their own ways for putting waste to the best use possible. The competition will cover students from class 1 to 9 under the primary, upper primary and secondary sections, and conclude before the last week of February 2023.

NMMC’s Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Solid Waste Management, Babasaheb Rajale, shared the civic body’s vision regarding the entire ‘Waste to Best’ campaign in Navi Mumbai.

“We are determined to spread awareness about the ‘three R’s’ of waste management – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, through regular competitions in all NMMC schools in Navi Mumbai. We believe that through a constant engaging activity it is very much possible to mould young minds into adopting a way of life that can go a long way into benefitting the environment and the society on a whole.”

“Our objective is to enable these young minds to come up with creative ways of putting waste to the best creative use possible.”

“In the near future, such a habit will help us, as a city, to minimise the quantity of waste dumped without thought every other day. On a broader level it will help us drive our ‘Swachhata’ campaign further.”

The NMMC is hopeful that many students would come up with innovative ideas to recycle solid waste available around them and that the number of students would grow with every such competition.

Highlights of NMMC’s ‘Waste to Best’ competition

  • The theme is based on the three 3‘R’s  – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
  • The competition will cover all NMMC schools in Navi Mumbai
  • Top entries from three sections of each school to be selected

Some Kharghar families did opt for Eco-friendly Ganesh idols

Though few in numbers, some families had brought home dainty eco-friendly Ganesh idols this Ganeshotsav.

Some Kharghar families did opt for Eco-friendly Ganesh idols

Kharghar / Panvel / Navi Mumbai: This Ganeshotsav, a keen sense of responsibility could be seen around in some of the families in Navi Mumbai. In Kharghar, for instance, some families had decided to bring home eco-friendly Ganesh idols, maintaining a good balance between celebration and environmental responsibility.

On Sunday, 4th September 2022, during the 5th day Ganpati visarjan, small yet beautiful eco-friendly Ganesh idols could also be seen lined up at local immersion ponds in Kharghar, waiting for their turns to be immersed.

Of the many families we met at the Ganesh Ghat (pond) in Kutukbandhan, Kharghar, the Prasad family, a small family of three – father, mother and young son, left an impression upon us, with their simplicity and their humble eco-friendly Ganesh idol. They were there for the 5-day immersion.

“We have been celebrating Ganeshotsav for some years now, and have always chosen eco-friendly Ganesh idols over PoP Ganesh idols. We have always felt that it is our responsibility not to harm the environment through any form of celebration. Four us, as a family, not buying PoP Ganesh idols is a simple way of playing our part in saving the environment,” the Prasad’s said with a sense of pride.

For those who are unaware, Ganesh Deshmukh, commissioner, Panvel Municipal Corporation (PCMC), had gone out of the way this year to promote the use of eco-friendly Ganesh idols during Ganeshotsav in Kharghar and entire Panvel region.

Deshmukh had even spearheaded an eco-friendly home and sarvajanik (public) Ganesh Mandal decoration competition 2022 under the campaigns – Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan 3.0 and Swachh Survekshan.

The competition was well received as many families and mandals had registered as participants. An examination board had been doing the rounds of all registered homes and mandals since the first day of Ganeshotsav.

Besides the PCMC, many socially aware residents and organisations in Kharghar have also been urging families and mandals to opt for eco-friendly Ganesh idols.

As a result of which, there has been a heightened sense of responsibility among people who are taking it as a personal responsibility to keep the environment safe this Ganeshotsav.

The PCMC said that they will be relentless in their endeavour to spread awareness about the conservation of the environment and safeguarding it in every possible manner.

City mandals have set up attractive pandals this year to welcome Lord Ganesh after a long two-year hiatus

Devotees of Ganesha in Navi Mumbai are all set to celebrate Ganeshotsav in all its grandeur this year, after patiently waiting for over two years, owing to the pandemic.

Ganesh mandals in Navi Mumbai have readied some very attractive and unique Ganesh pandals at every nook and corner of the city, just like the old days, much to the delight of city residents.

Now that the state government has finally lifted all covid-19 restrictions that were imposed for more than two years, residents are looking forward to celebrating Ganeshotsav with their families and friends, in a grand manner.

Shubham Vishwakarma, a Kharghar resident, shares joyfully, “We have been waiting to celebrate Ganeshotsav since two years and finally he is here. The city and its people are waiting eagerly to welcome Bappa into our city and homes. We are very ecstatic!”

Navi Mumbai residents are feeling nostalgic as their beloved deity, Ganesha, will be with them for the next couple of days, bringing in joy and prosperity.

Navi Mumbai’s popular Ganesh mandals across nodes like Airoli, Vashi, Turbhe, Nerul, Kharghar and Panvel are putting in everything to make this Ganeshotsav a celebration of triumph of the people over the pandemic. We wouldn’t be surprised to see some themes based on it.

In the panvel region, the Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had also waived all all permission and registration charges levied on Ganesh mandals in Navi Mumbai, doubling the joy of the organisers.

The PCMC had also set up an exclusive website ( http://smartpmc.in/Login ) for the purpose of registering of Ganesh pandals in the panvel region, further simplifying the process.

LocalPress.in wishes all Navi Mumbai residents, a very Joyful Ganeshotsav in advance and wishes that Ganesha brings you joy and prosperity!

Filthy and smelly road in Kharghar

The road, which runs from sectors 35 towards sectors 20, 21 etc. in Kharghar, is just one of the many such spots in the node

Kharghar / Panvel / Navi Mumbai: Residents, especially motorists, driving towards, or from Jal Vayu Vihar, to sector 35, Kharghar, are greeted by an ever existing foul smell emanating from a dump of grabage that lays bare for all to admire. To be frank, this is one of the most smelly, or rather stinking, and filthiest spots in Kharghar.

There spot is to the left of the main road, right before the plant nursery in the corner, where it turns. It is the road that meets the “I Love Kharghar” mural circle.

The dumping is not new, and many have grown accustomed to the sight. However, ever since it started raining, the scene has grown filthier and smellier.

Suraj Singh, a resident of sector 20, says, “This spot has become a permanent dump-yard and always filthy. Now, it has become filthier as the rain water has started accumulating with the garbage and waste materials. The smell is so foul and strong that you can identify it from a long distance.”

The foul smell is not the only problem, but the flies buzzing around are also a matter of concern.

Dinesh Patel, a resident of sector 21, says, “This spot is a filthy and smelly fly zone, potential enough to spread diseases in the neighbourhood. Luckily it is a bit isolated but flies can fly, right?”

During the evening, the road is buzzing with walkers and joggers and they are just not liking the fact that their quota of fresh air has compromised.

Arvind Gupta, a daily evening walker, shares, “Every evening I walk from Jal Vayu to the open ground near sector 35 and back. However, when I walk past that spot I just can’t bear that stinking smell at all. This is so pathetic. Dumping right in public view without any hindrance from the administration. That shows the unconcern of the sweepers and all who are responsible for the dump.”

Surprisingly, this is just one of such spots in Kharghar that are being used for the purpose of dumping garbage, with one a little further from this spot.

Monsoon cleaning is a sham: Corporator Leena Garad

by Staff Reporter June 13, 2022

The Kharghar Forum, led by Leena Garad, slammed the contractors entrusted with the job of cleaning of nullahs in Kharghar.

Monsoon cleaning is a sham: Leena Garad
A shoddily cleaned nullah in sector 12 of Kharghar (Photo: Corporator Leena Garad).

Kharghar / Raigad / Navi Mumbai: Local corporator Leena Garad recently inspected work carried out by contractors in ward nos. 4, 5 and 6 located in sectors 19, 12 and 10 respectively, as part of the monsoon cleaning routine, only to be shocked to see the shoddiness of the work done.

On Monday, 13 June 2022, Garad visited the Navrang corner road in sector 12 during the early hours of the day, and during inspection of the nullahs, which were supposedly cleaned by the contractors, found that the cleaning was done for the namesake.

Garad informed, “The Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) recently started monsoon cleaning in some sectors in Kharghar. However, the work carried out by the contractors assigned for the job is completely shoddy. The so-called cleaning is just a gimmick.”

“The contractors leave the mud and waste right next to the nullahs, which flows right back during the rains. The surprising fact is that the Leader of the House (PCMC), had been on an inspection visit recently but was apparently not taken to such places with shoddy work,” Garad said.

While inspecting the cleaning work carried out in sector 19, Madhu Patil, Co-ordinator of the Kharghar Forum, witnessed a similar situation.

“Cleaning work has just started in sector 19 and they have adopted the same method here as well – simply cleaning the area around the lids and the immediate visible part inside the nullahs. You can see huge amounts of waste on both sides if you just take a peek inside,” Patil informed.

Considering the level of shoddiness, Garad went on to making a public plea that the PCMC should not making payments to any of the contractors towards the monsoon cleaning work, till all the nullahs were cleaned thoroughly.

“The corporation should not pay anyone unless the nullahs are totally clean because there is no need to spend money on shoddy work,” Garad said.

One of the co-ordinators of the Kharghar Forum, Balsesh Bhojne, also went down into one of the nullahs to show the amount of waste lying inside.

The Kharghar Forum is pressing hard to ensure that the PCMC looks into the matter immediately and gets the monsoon cleaning work done on a priority basis.

Kharghar residents spending between Rs. 700 and 2500 for potable water every month

by Staff Reporter June 12, 2022
written by Staff Reporter

Since four months residents of Kharghar have been completely relying on tanker water, which is mostly smelly, sticky, muddy and unfit for drinking.

Kharghar residents have been buying 10-litre bottles of drinking water owing to the water crisis in the area (Photo – LP)

Kharghar / Panvel / Navi Mumbai: A majority of families in Kharghar and surrounding nodes like Taloja and Kamothe have been spending anywhere between Rs. 700 and Rs. 2500 every month on buying bottled potable water.

All these nodes in the Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) area have been surviving on water supplied by private tankers since March 2022. The City and Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. (CIDCO) has not been able to provide sufficient potable water to a majority of housing societies in the region, especially in Kharghar and Taloja nodes since about four months.

So while residential societies have been burdened by the huge costs of obtaining water for their residents for daily use, residents have been burdened by the expenses incurred on buying drinkable water.

The Jha family, residents of sector 35-I, shares, “The water issue in Kharghar has been dragging on since more then four months now. We hardly get water for 15 minutes in the morning and evening, and that water can only be used for washing clothes and utensils and bathing. To be frank, bathing with tanker water has been creating skin problems for many people in our society too, but that is another issue.”

“We cannot drink the muddy, smelly and sticky water at all. So the only option residents are left with is to buy bottled water. We consume 7 to 8 bottles of 10-litres each, every month, costing us between Rs. 700 to Rs. 800. It is an extra burden for a middle class family like us,” the Jha’s add.

This is not an isolated incident and the fact is that a majority of housing societies have been spending extra on drinking water, with larger families spending even more.

Tamanna Malhotra, a teacher residing in sector 35, shares, “We have to buy two 10-litre bottles of mineral water every second day, amounting to a total of 30 bottles a month, costing us Rs. 3000. In the month of May we had bought over 40 bottles owing to the heat.”

“A majority of residents in our society have been buying bottled water since months now. This is a very unnecessary expenditure for a majority of families,” she adds.

The surprising part is that most of the residents buying bottled water are those with RO systems already installed at their residences.

Jatin Rajpal, another resident of sector 35, shares, “You will be surprised to learn that the RO’s don’t actually seem to take away the stench of the ground water or pond water, wherever they source it from. So even when the filters clear the water off all visible dirt, the smell and taste don’t seem to change much.”

“We are not sure if the make and quality of the ROs matter that much, but they could be deciding factors too. Maybe expensive makes of water filters work well at filtering such murky water,” he adds.

Advocate Shelly Pandya, a resident of Hyde Park in sector 35 G, “We had an RO but had to buy another, costing Rs. 8000, to be able to filter the muddy and smelly water being supplied by the tankers. And even though the new RO does a pretty good job, it is just not the same as regular water supply.”

“While residents of our society have ROs installed, many of the middle class families in the area don’t have any owing to the costs. These families are also not in a position to buy bottled water every day. So, they have been using tanker water, which is unfit for drinking. However, many have started cutting down their budgets for the sake of buying bottled water at least twice in a week for fear of water borne diseases. Boiling water everyday too, is not cheap, owing to the amount of gas required to boil it.”

CIDCO had assured that the water issues of Kharghar and other neighbouring nodes would be resolved by the end of May 2022, subject to completion of work being carried out at the Hetawane Dam.

Earlier in the month, local corporator, Leena Garad, had also visited the Hetwane Dam to check the water level and status of ongoing repairs and modifications. She had revealed some startling facts too.

Also read: Kharghar Corporator Leena Garad visits Hetawane Dam

It is almost the end of June now, and residents are yet to receive adequate water supply.

Our (LocalPress.in) view

Well, we are well aware of the predicament as we are situated in Kharghar ourselves and have been spending around 2000 every month on buying bottled water.
