Navi Mumbai / Vashi: A team comprising officials from the revenue and forest department inspected the mangroves running along the Sion-Panvel highway near the Vashi toll plaza. This comes after continuous complaints from environment activists and residents about the destruction of mangroves in the area. The inspection was carried out Monday 13, 2019.

A complaint filed by local organisations stated ing that the activities being carried out on a stretch from the Vashi toll plaza to Vashi gaon bus stop was causing tremendous damage to the mangroves in the area. The construction being carried out in the area and the resulting piles of debris had already damaged the mangroves to a great extent.

The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), mangrove monitoring committee, the forest department and Cidco had been notified about the ongoing activity.

The highway construction is also severely damaging the mangroves as can be seen. They have been extending their work to almost into the mangroves. The dumping of debris along the stretch to facilitate expansion of the highway is causing the depletion of the mangroves in the area.

The Thane district revenue team, Turbhe mandal and forest officials visited the area and examined the destruction. They have assured of taking up the matter with the PWD and NMMC. Also, the MCZMA has asked the Konkan divisional commissioner and the state chief conservator of forest to look into the issue immediately.

In the meanwhile, residents have pointed out that the municipal commissioner, Ramaswami N had promised to build a protective wall along the highway but has fenced the area with a low-level railing.

Navi Mumbai / Vashi: The APMC committee has served notices to nearly 250 traders in the onion, potato and garlic traders market to make way for redevelopment work. The traders have been aked to vacate their galas by the end of May, 2019.

The APMC market was built in the 1980s and is in bad condition. The onion, potato and garlic market comprises of seven wings and houses around 250 traders. The NMMC had declared the buildings as dangerous since 2003. There have been slab collapse incidents in the past in the market continues to operate even though it poses grave threat to traders and visitors alike.

Officials at APMC informed that though notices had been to 234 traders, they had not vacated their premises. As per the notice given now, the Onion and Potato market will be shut from June 1, 2019.

As a temporary accommodation for the traders, a 200 sq ft transit camp gala has been offered. However, traders have refused to occupy it. Some of them have even moved HC against the notice.

Traders complain that the gala measuring just 200 sq ft is not sufficient to house all of even let trucks to load or unload their materials.

Some of the traders wondered if the building could be repaired rather than redeveloped.

Navi Mumbai / PMC / Panvel: The state forest department seems to have come out of their slumber. 6 months after a chemical leak at the HOCL chemical plant at Panvel, that killed 31 monkeys, the department is filing a chargesheet against the company.

In December, 2018, the carcasses of 31 monkeys (Bonnet macaque) and 14 rock pigeons (Columba livia) had been found at Rasayani. Reports by a veteraninary doctor pointed out ‘brain haemorrhage’ owing to exposure to nitric acid gas, supposedly from the plant. The reports had also ruled out any possibility of poisoning.

As per the assistant conservator of forests, the chargesheet will be filed within a week’s time.

Another truckload of biscuit packs, water etc that are currently being stored at Kerala Bhavan, Vashi, will be sent off to Odisha soon.

Cyclone Fani has hit Odisha harder than the super cyclone that had hit Odisha in 1999. Commodity prices have risen, power supply has been disrupted, water has become scarce and has to be collected from hand pumps, road connectivity and mobile networks have been cut off, crops destroyed and much more. There has been devastation all around.

Amid such, for some reason, the Odisha Bhavan is not stocking donated goods in their premises.

Summers made worse by frequent power cuts in Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai: The summers have been made unbearable for many as the city reels under frequent power cuts across several nodes. While power cuts are not unacceptable, the unscheduled cuts have not been well received by citizens.

The most affected areas have been Digha, Airoli, Turbhe, Ghansoli, Koparkhairane and Vashi in the Thane district. These nodes had witnessed power cuts during the nights owing to increase in power consumption. Pre-monsoon maintenance work has also been a reason for the power cuts in some places. For instance, Vashi had a power cut on Tuesday owing to maintenance work on the power lines.

In the Raigad district nodes like Uran, Kamothe and Panvel have been affected. For instance, in Uran, power supply has been made worse owing to other issues like open cables, damaged feeder boxes etc. residents believe that there has been a serious mismatch of demand and supply in the area.

In another incident on Tuesday, a supply line from 400 KV sub-station of Kharghar, supplying power to Kamothe, was down for maintenance from 10 am to 5pm, without any intimation to the residents.

In another incident on Tuesday, a supply line from 400 KV sub-station of Kharghar, supplying power to Kamothe, was down for maintenance from 10 am to 5pm, without any intimation to the residents.

Officials from MSEDCL assured that it was all owing to the pre-monsoon preparation work and even though alternate supply arrangement was being made at certain areas, there had been other issues in the supply system that needed to be worked upon on priority basis.

Further, they informed that all maintenance work was being carried out in a phase-wise manner and hence the inconvenience was limited to the area being worked upon on a given point of time.
