The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will be developing the state’s first floating solar power project on Morbe Dam. The 100 MW capacity solar power plant will tag along a 1.5 MW hydropower project.

The tender for both projects has been floated and work will commence once the work order is released. The solar plant is stipulated to be operational in a year’s time post approvals.

There had been participation by renowned power companies like Tata Power, Power Corporation of India. Even companies from as far as Singapore had bid for for both the solar plant project and the hydropower project.

NMMC’s floating solar power project will be built on a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) basis, and completed in three phases. The first phase will see the development of a 40 MW solar power installation.

The NMMC will not have to shell out any money for the project owing to its BOT model.

Once operational, the project will be capable enough to provide electricity to the NMMC for less than Rs. 4 per unit.

The NMMC also informed that some of the buildings owned by them have already started adopting solar energy as a feasible power option.

The floating solar power plant of Morbe will be nothing less than a milestone for the NMMC and a leap towards energy conservation and low carbon emissions.

Details about NMMC’s Floating Solar Power project

Project name: Morbe Solar Power Plant

Conception: 2011 (more than a decade ago)

Capacity of Solar plant: 100 MW/ Hydropower Plant: 1.5 MW

Site of Solar plant: Morbe Dam, Khalapur, Raigad

Project Type: BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer)

Type of partnership: Public-Private-Partnership (PPP)

Competing companies: 19Phases of work: 3 phases (40 MW plant to be finished first)

Phases of work: 3 phases (40 MW plant to be finished first)

Benefits: Electricity at Rs. 4 per unit to NMMC, minimised carbon emissions, harnessing of abundant solar energy, reduced water evaporation and algal blooming at the dam and improved water quality. It is estimated that the NMMC will be able to save over Rs. 20 crores annually using the power harnessed from both the projects.

The NMMC has been actively adopting new technologies and methodologies to transform Navi Mumbai into a greener, safer and progressive city.

Residents are hopeful that the corporation will also priortise tackling the “pollution crisis” of Navi Mumbai which is escalating slowly, day by day.

Picnickers flock at Pandavkada waterfall, Owe Dam and Kharghar Hills, despite ban

by Staff Reporter July 11, 2023
written by Staff Reporter

Monsoon lovers have been ignoring the official order that has prohibited visiting these places, and others, from 11 June to 30 September 2023.

Picnickers and revellers have started visiting the Pandavkada waterfall, the Owe Dam, the Owe Hills and other such spots in Kharghar as the monsoon has finally set in. These areas have been overflowing thanks to the continuous rainfall in the city since a couple of days, enough to draw in monsoon lovers.

The Kharghar police had issued a public order banning visit to a number of places, especially the risky Pandavkada waterfall, starting 11 June till 30 September 2023.

However, just like every year, the plea has fallen on deaf ears and people have been blatantly ignoring the order.

The ban is a regular occurrence during the monsoons due to many past incidents where people had lost their lives by drowning in the overflowing water, either after slipping or getting drifted away by strong currents. In one such tragic incident in 2019, four people had drowned.

The list of prohibited spots in Kharghar this year carries the names of places like Pandavkada waterfall – the most ill-fated spot, the Driving Range waterfall, the Owe Dam and Hill, the Taloja Jail Pond and the Hill around it and some other spots that either have water flowing through or have accumulated waterbodies.

Noticeboards informing picnickers about the prohibition and the fines that follow if they are caught visiting these places, have been placed at all the entrances leading to such spots.

The Kharghar police have deployed constables at the Pandavkada waterfall’s main entry point near the Kharghar Gurudwara and at the entrance of the Owe Village which leads to the Owe Dam area.

However, revellers have been finding ways to visit these spots and others making use of the hilly terrain and multiple possible entries from other spots, which are impossible to be manned round the clock.

“We stop people from venturing into these places but they find different and isolated routes to sneak in,” a constable posted at one of the spots informed.

Many of these revellers happen to be youngsters who either go early during the mornings when there aren’t many constables around or simply take routes that are not monitored.

In the past there have been many incidents where people had gotten lost along the routes they had taken or simply got stuck in water-filled spots.

There was a much-talked about incident in July 2021 when as many as 116 picnickers had to be rescued by the fire department, after being stranded at the Kharghar Hills area for hours. The return route was cut off by an overflowing stream. Among the stranded were many women and children too.

These spots also get a good number of drunkards who make merry and throw away broken beer bottles around. Small incidents involving scuffles after drinking, falling down on the way back due to intoxication have been reported in the past.

A good number of people have also been hiking the Owe Hills area since a week. While families and youngsters usually hike here on weekends, the rains have been drawing in more people than ever.

Advocate Shelly Pandya, a local Kharghar resident, shares, “While locals visit under the ‘false belief’ of knowing everything about the area, many come in from places outside Mumbai and are unaware of the prohibition until they reach these spots. Once here, they consider it a waste of time to go back without doing anything and end up visiting these places in any way possible.”

“The irony is in the fact that the order issued by the police under CrPC section 144 has not succeeded in discouraging people from visiting these spots and putting their lives and that of their loves once at risk,” she adds.

The Kharghar police have been doing their best to make people aware of the risks involved but it is a matter of personal responsibility. If people cannot understand and abide by the rules then it becomes their own responsibility and liability.

Owe Dam, Kharghar: A monsoon delight for nature lovers

by Staff Reporter July 5, 2023
written by Staff Reporter

Nestled between magnificent hills, the Owe Dam, a small structure built on the Owe Lake, is a majestic natural setting for nature lovers who seek serene environments.

Owe Dam, Kharghar: A personal haven for nature lovers
The Owe Dam is built on the Owe lake, nestled between the (Kharghar-Owe) Hills.
  • Place: Owe Dam
  • Locations: Owe Village Forest Area, Kharghar
  • City: Navi Mumbai
  • District: Raigad
  • Taluka: Panvel
  • Administrative authority: Panvel City Municipal Corporation
  • Address: Owe Camp, Owe Village Forest Area, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra 410210
  • Accessibility: The Owe Dam is officially off limits for revellers owing to the risks involved during the monsoons.

Owe Dam is located in the forest area of Owe Village (also Owe Camp) in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. It is unofficially one of the best picnic locations in Kharghar, though in an isolated spot nestled between the Kharghar Hills and Owe Hills.

For those who are unaware and have heard the name “Owe” for the first time; Owe is a village in Owe Camp area, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.

The Owe Dam lies in the interiors, towards the forest area of Kharghar (Owe) Hills near Gholwadi village, and is constructed on a holding point or Owe lake, as people call it, which is located right in the centre of the hills that cover the water body like a fence.

For first timers, the Owe Dam is not a huge dam or an exploited picnic spot like Pandavkada (Kharghar) Waterfalls (which is prohibited) or the driving range waterfalls (which is highly crowded and exploited).

The aloofness and calmness of the Owe Dam area makes it the best of the lot and it is the ideal choice for those who like to enjoy the company of nature alone, and not amid reckless and unconcerned frolickers.

Owe Dam, Kharghar: A personal haven for nature lovers
The Owe Dam area is isolated and hence an unexploited natural spot .

The best thing is that Owe Dam is located in an isolated spot and hence spared of the exploits of irresponsible and unconcerned people who only know to make merry and create filth wherever they go.

What makes the Owe Dam area special are the green hills that surround the Owe Lake, the silence, the fields around, the pristine water and the complete absence of exhausting city life.

The calmness that you will find at the Owe Dam, sitting alone or in the company of your friends, simply gazing at the horizon, the water or the hills, will give you more positivity than visiting a pub and socializing in chaotic and mind it, expensive settings.

Owe Dam, Kharghar: A personal haven for nature lovers
The Owe Lake/Dam is an unexplored natural habitat nestled between the Hill Range of Kharghar.

For those who would like to have a glimpse of village life – dainty huts, cattle, bullocks carts, food being cooked on the choolah and children actually playing around with actual play materials (and not mobile phones) – slower your pace and absorb all the vibes of a village life that you can, in your short visit.

Owe Dam, Kharghar: A personal haven for nature lovers
You can catch a glimpse of village life at the Owe Camp (village) area on your way to the Owe Dam, Kharghar.

Best time to visit Owe Dam:

Monsoons is the best time to visit Owe Dam although it is a great place throughout the year. However, it is for people who like to sit calmly by the waters in a serene environment.

Things to do at Owe Dam, Kharghar:

Owe Dam, Kharghar: A personal haven for nature lovers
The pump house structure at Owe Dam is a popular attraction.

Well, Owe Dam is on a lake which is calm and serene. So you can sit down and simply ponder over things while watching the calm water body.

The serene, pollution free environment of the Owe Dam area (as compared to other parts of Kharghar, especially sectors 34, 35, 35 till the Taloja area, which are polluted owing to the pollution by factories in the Taloja MIDC) makes it an ideal location to indulge in some yoga or meditation routine.

Having a small picnic of sorts, with family or friends, which involves snacks and treats can also be a great thing to do (provided you don’t litter around).

For those who like to simply jump and splash in water, the Owe Dam is a safe water body unless you act irresponsibly.

Every now and then cyclists from all around Navi Mumbai pedal their way to Kharghar and to the Owe Dam to have some quiet early morning moments.

Owe Dam, Kharghar: A personal haven for nature lovers
Many cyclists from distant nodes visit the Owe Dam area during early mornings.

The Owe Dam has a small structure that stands out as a pump house or a small lighthouse (as some people call it). It is a great location for photography and you can shoot nature photos, pre-wedding or portfolios.

How to reach Owe Dam: Best mode of transportation

You can reach Owe Dam, Kharghar, by Train, Bus, Four/Two Wheeler, Cycle or on Foot/Walking

Train: The Kharghar Railway station is the nearest railway station to reach Owe Dam. From Kharghar station you can take an auto or a sharing ride (ask for a tam tam). You can also take a bus to reach Owe.

Bus: There are multiple buses that start from the Kharghar Railway station that run on the Kharghar station-Taloja bus route that passes along the Owe Village bus stop, which is at a 15 minute walk from the Owe Dam.

Four Wheeler and Two Wheeler: From Utsav Chowk, drive all along the Raintree Marg, past TATA Hospital. From Taloja, drive all the way towards the TATA Hospital and take a right turn at the crossroads before the hospital.

Cycle: Cyclists can pedal all the way to Owe Dam and trust us, cycling to the dam would be a great experience as it is easy to manage and ride along the tricky path that leads to the dam. Rent a Yulu Bike/Cycle and enjoy the ride to the dam.

Walking: This one is the best mode for locals and even visitors to enjoy the adventurous walk to the Owe Dam.

Directions (Google maps) to reach Owe Dam, Kharghar

For first time visitors to Owe Dam

Allroads that leads to Owe Dam are wide and smooth till the Owe bus stop. Once there, you will be greeted by muddy tracks leading up to the Owe Camp (Village) and Hills area. So, wear light and comfortable attires and carry water bottles too. And yes, you will have to ignore the ugly quarry that is hard to miss – simply ignore it or you will find yourself cursing the administration that is slowly eating up the hills like termites.

Safety tips for visiting Owe Dam

  1. Stay behind safety barriers, if any
  2. Supervise children very closely, dont leave them alone
  3. Wear non-slip footwear
  4. Avoid restricted areas
  5. Be aware of the water level

Advice for couples and girls visiting Owe Dam

Though Owe Dam is safe for girls and couples who wish to steal some private moments in the area, it would be advisable not to visit during odd hours or alone, if possible. You never know. If nothing else, you can get into a tricky situation if you meet with an untoward incident, like slipping and falling down or some health issue. Take along a friend or a couple of friends.

P.S. While you will enjoy the scenery at the Owe Dam, make sure that you don’t leave behind your footprints (bottles, wrappers and all that filth). Nobody is obliged to clean off your filth – you bring it, you take it back or else don’t visit such places! Thanks!

The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), has approved a proposal for the deployment of a modern and cost-effective system called ‘MetroNeo’ for the remaining lines of the Navi Mumbai Metro. The new system will be deployed on NMM Lines 2, 3 and 4, replacing the standard gauge metro system, used for Line 1.

Just to make readers aware, Line 1 of the Navi Mumbai Metro has had multiple trial runs and is expected to commence operations soon after receiving the final statutory approval from the Commission of Railway Safety (CMRS). Though the inauguration has been delayed quite a number of times, it is said to commence soon this year.

The development authority will take up the construction of NMM Line 2 next. With 6 elevated stations connecting MIDC-Taloja to Khandeshwar, Line 2 will run 7.12 kilometres.

The next to follow will be NMM Line 3, which will have 3 elevated stations connecting Pendhar to MIDC Taloja, running a total of 3.87 kilometres.

The last one to be constructed will be NMM Line 4, which will connect Panvel to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, running a total of 4.17 kilometres.

MetroNeo, Navi Mumbai

The Navi Mumbai Metro Lines 2,3 and 4 will use ‘MetroNeo’ a modern Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) system, which uses an overhead traction trolley bus system with rubber tyres. In comparison to ‘Gauge Metro’ it is smoother, less noisy and cost-effective.

Navi Mumbai MetroNeo features

  • Fully air-conditioned buses
  • Automated door-closing system
  • Comfortable seats
  • Level boarding
  • Passenger announcement system
  • Information system (electronic display)

Broad benefits of MetroNeo Navi Mumbai

  • Smooth transport
  • Quicker pace
  • Cost-effective
  • Comparatively reliable

CIDCO aims to make NMM Line 2 operational within 2 years, after starting Line 1 this year. A credit line of Rs 1,000 crore and a detailed report of Line 2 is ready. Tenders will be floated soon and contractors appointed for the project.

While residents of Navi Mumbai have taken the news in good spirit, they hope that CIDCO will start the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 soon.

NMMC installs experimental smart poles in two spots in Navi Mumbai

by Staff Reporter May 7, 2023
written by Staff Reporter

The poles will help monitor pollution and crime situations, to name a few, in their respective locations

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has come up with yet another innovative measures to tackle crime and pollution in the city; Smart Poles! In a pilot project of the NMMC, two smart poles have been installed in two different locations on Navi Mumbai – Koperkhairane and the Vashi-Sanpada highway.

Details and features about NMMC’s Smart Poles:

  • Built in wireless connectivity
  • CCTV
  • Sensors to monitor temperature
  • Accurate gauging of air pollution levels
  • An emergency button to alert local police station during emergencies

The two smart poles installed by the NMMC will be monitoring daily activities around them and also tracking daily temperature and pollution levels.

The NMMC is hopeful that the two installations will bear fruitful results and provide them with reason enough to install more such smart poles in Navi Mumbai.

Residents, though enthusiastic about the idea, still doubt how far the experiment would go in helping the NMMC monitor such hotspots and most importantly, how would they be able to ensure that the installations are not stolen by miscreants.
