Navi Mumbai Chhat Puja 2021 celebrations conclude

Navi Mumbai: The Chhat Puja celebrations in the city concluded on Thursday, 11 November 2021, with hundreds of devout north Indians gathering at various ponds all across Navi Mumbai to offer “Usha Arghya” or “Early Morning Prayer to the Rising Sun”, in unison.

Women broke their day-long fast which had started on the morning of Wednesdaay, a day prior.

The four-day Chhat Puja celebrations in Navi Mumbai saw huge crowds converging at ponds in several nodes of Navi Mumbai, like Kharghar, Belapur, Ulwe, Nerul, Vashi and others.

In Kharghar, Chhat Puja was celebrated with great fervour at several ponds like the Taloja Jail Pond, Central Park Pond and others.

On Wednesday evening, the third day of celebrations, city devouts had gathered at ponds to offer “Sandhay Arghya” or “Evening Prayers to the Setting Sun”.

During the “Sandhay Arghya” event, fasting women took along “Soops” or “Bamboo Baskets” filled with prasad, mainly fruits, hekau and laddus made of rice. They stood in the water, chanting, till the sun went down, and then stepped out of the water after offering their prayer to the Chhati Maiyya.

The entire event was nothing less than a carnival, with people dressed up elegantly, especially children who wore clothes of vibrant colours, and ran around merrily. There was praying, singing, laughing and a lot more all around.

Mohit Tiwari, a local resident, shared, “Earlier we used to live in sector 21 of Kharghar and so all of us used to celebrate Chhat Puja at the Central Park pond. However, we recently shifted to Taloja Panchanand and so this year we celebrated Chhat at the Navde pond, a local waterbody near our house.”

“We had thought that there would be very few people celebrating with us but were surprised to find hundreds of families gathered at the pond. It was a great feeling to be celebrating Chhat after a year of pandemic.”

On returning home from the “Sandhya Arghya”, the fasting women performed another ritual known as “Kosi Bharai” wherein they erected triangular teepees with just five sugarcanes tied together. Later during the night, they indulged in dvotional songs and hyms of Shashthi Devi and the “Vrat Katha”.

Then, a dozen or more earthern lamps were lit in the base formed between the tied canes. Also offerings like fruits and thekua were kept along with the burning lamps.

On Thursday, that is today and the fourth and final day of Chhat Puja, the devotees headed back to the ponds for the “Usha Arghya” between 3 am and 4 am, to repeat the same rituals performed during the “Sandhya Arghya” with the only exception of them offering raw cow milk to the Sun God through the “soop”.

After making offerings to the sun rose, the fasting women broke their fast with raw milk, sharbat and prasad offered during the prayers.

Though the number of people gathered at ponds was overwhelming, the organisers tried their best to follow covid-19 protocols as much as possible.

NMMC launches ‘Zero Plastic’ campaign in civic schools; urges students to collect plastic waste in 1-litre plastic water bottles

by Staff Reporter November 10, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

Students with most plastic collections will be awarded with the titles – “Zero Plastic Waste Ward Champion” and “Zero Plasic Waste Navi Mumbai Champion”.

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a campaign – ‘Zero Plastic Starts with Me’, in all NMMC schools, for class II to class X students. Students will be encouraged to collect non-degradable plastic waste such as chocolate wrappers, wafer packets and other such plastic materials in 1-litre plastic water bottles.

The NMMC has joined hands with city based ngo, The Heart Foundation, to spread awareness and further establish the ban on the use of plastic materials in the city that seem to have increased recently.

NMMC Commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, is of the opinion that a competition involving students seemed to be the perfect way to make them understand the importance of the campaign and also actively contribute towards its success.

Talking about rewards the NMMC informed that one school from each of the eight wards in their jurisdiction between Airoli to CBD-Belapur, to collect the highest quantity of non-degradable plastic waste will be rewarded.

Similarly, one student from each ward with the most collection will be rewarded with the title – “Zero Plastic Waste Ward champion” and “Zero Plastic Waste Navi Mumbai champion” accordingly.

Also, all participating students will be handed out with a certificate of participation/appreciation.

The competition will remain open till 4th December, 2021.

Central Park-Pendhar Metro Line likely to start from December end

by Staff Reporter October 27, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

The route will start from the Kharghar Central Park, going through Pethpada (sector 33), sector 34, Panchanand and end at Pendhar.

Kharghar / Taloja / Navi Mumbai: Residents of Kharghar are most likely to be able to ride the metro from December, 2021, as per news based on the latest developments in the processing of paperwork of the Navi Mumbai Metro.

Very recently, The Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) issued an Interim Speed Certificate (ISC) to the Navi Mumbai Metro after thorough scrutiny of all required documents and test certificates, which confirmed complete adherence to the guidelines of the RDSO safety manual.

The ISC has enabled and entitled the Navi Mumbai Metro to run metro trains between the Central Park metro station and Pendhar metro station route at the maximum operational speed.

Next in line is an inspection and approval by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), which will enable the Navi Mumbai Metro to commence commercial runs on the route.

The Central Park – Pendhar Metro route will cover Central Park, Pethpada (sector 33), sector 34, Panchanand and Pendhar.

In a broader sense, it will connect sectors 19, 20, 33, 34, 35 of Kharghar with sectors in and around Taloja Panchanand/Pendhar.

Residents of Kharghar and Taloja are excited about the news and expect an entire different travelling experience from December, 2021.

Shubham Vishwakarma, a resident of Taloja, says, “It is good news for those who travel between Taloja and Kharghar frequently for house errands or other work in sectors 19 and 20 of Kharghar.”

“They will now be able to travel in air-conditioned rail cars, without any hassles, and maybe spend less too, compared to auto fares in Kharghar,” he adds.

With construction speeding up on the Navi Mumbai Metro, office goers in and around Kharghar and Taloja are hopeful of being able to get a convenient ride up to Kharghar and Belapur railway stations, on their way to work, and back.

Pradeep S., a resident of Taloja, shares, “The metro will be a very convenient and fast mode of transport to the Belapur railway station, which is near my office, from my house in Taloja.”

“It will save me the hassle of waiting for and travelling in a bus or tumtum every day. Let’s hope that the CBD-Belapur Metro station gets linked in a year’s time,” he adds.

Kharghar / Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Metro was recently issued with and Interim Speed Certificate (ISC) by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) based on successful trails on Line-1 trials that will connect the Central Park metro station to the Pendhar metro station.

CIDCO officials informed that based on the successful trials that were conducted on the Metro Line-1 in September, 2021, and reviewing of all supporting documents and test certificates confirming adherence to the guidelines mentioned in the safety manual of the RDSO, the interim speed certificate was readily granted.

Navi Mumbai restaurants and eateries to remain open till midnight from today

by Staff Reporter October 22, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

The working time of restaurants and eateries will be extended till midnight, compared to their earlier deadline of 10 pm.

Navi Mumbai: From today, Friday 22nd October, restaurants and eateries in Navi Mumbai will be able to work late into midnight, thanks to the state government’s decision considering a very low number of coronavirus cases in the state in the last couple of months.

On Sunday, the city of Mumbai is said to have registered a zero-covid-death day, and with the BMC confident of zero possibility of a third wave of coronavirus to hit the city, a belief supported by the covid task force around the state, the government is keen on taking a leap of faith.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) are positive about the decision of the state government for their succeeding battle against the coronavirus pandemic, and reports of all time low cases.

Restaurants in Navi Mumbai currently conduct their businesses between 7am and 10pm with an occupancy of 50%, but under the new directive, which comes into effect from today, they will be able to remain open till midnight (12 pm).

Several restaurants’ and hotels’ associations had petitioned for restoration of pre-covid business hours, late into the night, till 1.30am and it was believed that the state government would give in.

However, the CM’s office confirmed that restaurants and eateries will only be allowed to remain open till 12am.

Though the decision has come as a little bit of a disappointed for many hospitality associations, they have welcomed it happily, as they believe that the two-hour extension from the earlier closing time of 10pm, will help a lot in conducting some extra business.

All previous SOPs, like 50% capacity, sanitisation etc., will be followed as usual from 22nd October as well.

However, the state government has allowed local authorities to take a call on the decision, and amend it in ways that will suit the pandemic scenario in their respective areas.

Note: The NMMC and PCMC are yet to release a circular outlining the SOPs concerning the reopening of restaurants and eateries and other establishments. This article presents the decision of the state government on a whole.

Tomato prices soar in Navi Mumbai; May increase further

Tomato prices soar in Navi Mumbai; May increase further

by Staff Reporter October 20, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

Tomatoes are being sold in Navi Mumbai between Rs. 20 to Rs. 40 in the wholesale market, and between Rs. 80 to Rs. 120 in the retail market.

Tomato prices soar in Navi Mumbai; May increase further

Navi Mumbai: There has been a huge spike in the price of tomatoes in Navi Mumbai in the last two weeks. A dip in the supply of tomatoes by major suppliers in Maharashtra is said to be the main cause for the increased prices.

This comes after the recent overwhelming increase in the price of vegetable in Navi Mumbai.

The regular produce and supply of vegetables, especially tomatoes, has been adversely affected during the month of September, due to incessant rains.

If readers recall, the onion and vegeables prices had skyrocketed in Navi Mumbai during the month of September last year too.

Traders at the Vashi Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) and Panvel APMC inform that there has been a 40% drop in the supply of tomatoes in Navi Mumbai since September.

It is but obvious that the shortage in supply of Tomatoes is bound to increase the prices.

So while tomatoes are being retailed between Rs. 80 and Rs.120 in Vashi and its neighbouring nodes, Kharghar and its surrounding nodes are seeing a price between Rs. 70 and Rs. 80.

However, many traders fear that the price may increase further as the festive season is just around the corner and it will take at least two weeks for facilitating adequate supply of tomatoes from other states.

As for now, Navi Mumbai residents will have to pay more for tomatoes for another two weeks or even more.

Glimpse of Navratri celebrations in Navi Mumbai 2021

Navi Mumbai’s Durga pandals have simple decorations this Navratri – 2021, with themes like “Nari Shakti” to “Saluting the Corona Warriors”.

Navi Mumbai: Though Navratri celebrations in the city have been a low key affair under the directives of the NMMC and PCMC in the wake of the covid-19 pandemic, there was plenty to be seen at several Durga pandals in Navi Mumbai. With sensitising themes revolving around crimes against women to awareness about the covid-19 pandemic, there was some variety to it.

Following are photos of Durga Pandals across several nodes of Navi Mumbai:

IRR gives AA+ Stable Rating to NMMC for excellent financial performance 2020-21

by Staff Reporter October 13, 2021
written by Staff Reporter

The Navi Mumbai Civic Body is the first one in the country to get such ratings for seven consecutive years.

IRR gives AA+ Stable Rating to NMMC for excellent financial performance 2020-21

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has been awarded with a high “AA+ Stable Rating” by India Ratings and Research (IRR), a highly esteemed credit rating and research agency of India, which grades organisations according to their finance management and loan repayment capabilities.

The ratings were given based on NMMC’s high financial capability during the year 2020-21, wherein the civic body displayed their result oriented administrative and fund management capabilities, just like the last six years.

Significance of the high AA+ Stable Rating of NMMC:

  • The rating highlights NMMC’s ability to prepare realistic budgets and implementing them year on year, with a high success rate.
  • It acknowledges NMMC’s financial strength and capability of repaying loans to all borrowers on time.
  • The trust factor of lenders on NMMC, is also a key takeaway from the ratings.
  • NMMC’s target and result oriented tax collection strategies have been appreciated.
  • Such credible ratings will help NMMC source funds for present and future mega infrastructure projects
  • Given a complete display of financial transparency, the NMMC would also be able to issue bonds in future

Abhijit Bangar, NMMC Commissioner, is elated by the ratings and expressed his appreciation for the all departments of the NMMC for working so meticulously throughout the pandemic, ensuring that all financial targets were met and liabilities fulfilled in stipulated time.

The NMMC claims to have achieved this proud feat by ensuring timely payment to all suppliers, contractors and other lenders, through a smooth digitized payment process. This also emphasises on the corporations successful strides in digitization.

Talking about finances, the NMMC informed that they don’t have any outstanding loan or interest to be paid to the state government.

The rating has boosted the morale of the NMMC as they gear to take further progressive strides.
