Navi Mumbai / Belapur: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken a step ahead for convincing bikers to wear a helmet. At least those who have work at the corporation’s head office. The NMMC office premises has been declared as a ‘Campus With Helmet’ premises, permitting only those who wear a helmet while riding two wheelers.

The initiative has been spearheaded by the municipal commissioner, Ravindra Patil, supported by the city traffic police.

The corporation believes that they would be contributing in their own way as many who throng the NMMC office every day will have to make it a habit to wear helmets.

Make all civic buildings fire-safe: NMMC

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has pulled up their sleeves to ensure that all civic building in their region are fire-safe. They recently issued a circular directing their staff to ensure that all their civic buildings had recent fire certifications. They also included 73 of their municipal school buildings in the directive.

Apparently, the circular came after an RTI was filed by an RTI activist, seeking knowledge about the present fire-safety conditions of all the civic structures in the city.

Ravindra Patil, the additional municipal commissioner, NMMC, informed that they were concerned about the fire safety in all their official buildings and that a circular had been sent directing all staff to ensure there was no loop holes and that all safety parameters were in place.

However, an RTI activist informed that all 73 municipal schools in the city housing more than 25,000 students were not prepared to handle any fire situation.

Well, before you start searching it on the internet let us tell you – it is not on food ordering apps and there are no paid reviews too. So you won’t find any information online (aren’t you glad that we did it for you guys?).

So where is it?

It was a roadside “thela” (now don’t say that you don’t know what a thela is. Still if you insist – it was a roadside food cart) right outside the open market located at Valley Shilp society, and opposite Swapnapurti society in sector 36, Kharghar, that has now shifted to a tidy small shop in Valley Shilp (that’s progress!).

How old is it?

Well, we started eating here since two months back and they seem to be here three of four months before that.

Who runs it?

Well, a lovely Maharashtrian couple along with their two kids (Okay, all you child labour advocates, the kids go to school and help their parents in their business too.) is running it in the best possible manner.

Strong points…

The staff’s behaviour:

Well, as said earlier, it is managed by the couple and so they are all we have for staff. Talking about their behavior – they make every customer feel at home, greeting them the moment they visit the cart. And they never fail to take reviews from the customers at least twice, once when they are half way through and when they pay up. Now how many do that at restaurants? (We hope they continue doing that in the coming years too when they expand – we know they will!)

The ambience…

Well, given the fact that it is a food cart out in the open, you have a natural ambience to look at with daily life going around you. As it is open during the evenings, you get to see a variety of people around you going around for a stroll, sitting and chatting around the stall, kids playing around and other such things.

The food:

Now, the pav bhaji that they serve is tasty like we have said with a different taste to it and also cheap (costing Rs 55 per plate and Rs 60 if you want a takeaway).

We have been eating around a lot but have not found such taste in some of the restaurants in the vicinity too. So that should say it all. You will have to taste it to believe it.

Panvel City Municipal Corporation plans drive to confine stray pigs

Panvel / Navi Mumbai / PCMC: The Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has pulled up their sleeves to tackle all stray problems affecting the residents in their region. Recently, they initiated a drive against the feeding of pigeons at public places and now they are coming up with a plan to confine all stray pigs roaming the streets of the city, spreading filth as they go about on their daily exploits for food.

They have issued a notice under section 294 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, which clearly mentions that birds and animals cannot be fed in public areas as they create sanitation issues for all the filth and clutter they tend to create.

The PCMC chief, Ganesh Deshmukh’s orders have been supported by the Supreme Court’s order that upheld the lower court order against feeding birds within residential societies.

The drive now extends from just prohibiting residents from feeding pigeons in public places to letting pigs loiter in the open in search for food.

Officials informed that a census of pigs is round the corner and once done, owners will be made aware of the public notice. Any owner who is found in violation of the notice will be fined Rs 500 as a first time offender and Rs 1000 for the second time. Although the notice simply prohibits feeding animals and birds in public the civic body will also be prohibiting pig owners from letting them out to look for food.

In recent times, there has been increased problems in several civic areas, especially in Kharghar, owing to the feeding of pigeons in public places and stray pigs doing the rounds of the public areas.

Kharghar ward officer, Bhagwan Patil, informed that they had included yet another spot in sector 20 for daily vigil, besides Hiranandani and sector 12. He further informed that the campaign had been giving good results and so far no offenders had been spotted.

Teacher forgets SSC exam answer sheets in auto rickshaw

Navi Mumbai / Dighe: Seven repeaters who had appeared for the SSC examination are finding themselves at the receiving end as the teacher who was assigned with the task of submitting their answer sheets at the SSC board office at Vashi, forgot them in the auto rickshaw she was travelling in.

Officials informed that the teacher, a resident of Airoli, working with the Vivekanand English School at Gavtewadi, Dighe, was taking the checked answer sheets to Vashi board office in an auto rickshaw on 12^th March when she lost them. However, the complaint was filed 3 days later, on 15^th March.

Police officials informed that the teacher had misplaced seven answer sheets and when she was not able to find them after a 3-day search, she filed a complaint. They said that there was no indication of a foul play and that they had registered a property missing complaint,” he added.

The Mumbai Divisional Board has sought an explanation from the teacher and decide if it was owing to her negligence.

Talking about the results of the exams if the answer sheets were not to be found, the school authorities informed that the students might get the average of the scores they get in other subjects.

MSEDCL chalks strategy to curb Ghansoli power faults

Navi Mumbai / Ghansoli: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has taken the matter of frequent power faults in Ghansoli seriously and has planned a strategy to overcome it. The power issue has been affecting around 40,000 consumers in the area.

Officials at the MSEDCL informed that a 7km-long underground 22KV power cable that stretched from Kalwa sub-station to Ghansoli via Airoli suburban railway station was the reason for the power faults amounting to a 12-hour power cut. However, the slums located on the cables posed as a hurdle in locating the faulty area.

The MSEDCL is now planning to lay a 1.25km-long cable from the sub-station around the erstwhile NOCIL to Ghansoli. The work will cost over Rs 1 crore. Also, a new sub-station will be developed on a 2,000 square metre land that was being being purchased from Cidco.

MSEDCL additional executive engineer, Airoli, informed that the work will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase they will lay around 1.25km-long cable of 22KV that will help reduce the existing load by half. In the second phase, the new sub-station will be developed on the 2,000 sqmt land being purchased from Cidco. The news sub-station will have a ring system with inter-connectivity facility.

Advertisers chop off trees to make hoardings visible at Sanpada

Navi Mumbai / Sanpada: An advertising company has chopped of around four trees off the Sion-Panvel highway at Sanpada to ensure visibility to two hoardings. They were only permitted to trim the trees at the most.

The matter came into light when some concerned citizens and environmental activists noticed it. As per their statement, the offenders may have chopped off at least four huge trees that also included an old peepal tree. They immediately informed the gardens department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) about the crime.

Officials at the NMMC gardens department informed that they had inspected the site based on the complaint and found it to be true. They were in the process of sending show-cause notices to the hoarding companies and would take further action.

The hoarding company might get booked under section 20 (1) of the Maharashtra Preservation of Trees Act, 1975.

Panvel / Navi Mumbai: Pigeon lovers in the area were in for a surprise as the Panvel civic commissioner, Ganesh Deshmukh, recently issued a notice telling them not to feed pigeons in public and residential areas, failing which, they would be penalized under section 294 of Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act.

The notice came after raised concerns of residents about increase in filth in the feeding areas, which were usually in residential and public areas.

Many complain that pigeon are being openly fed on pavements, society premises, bus stops, gardens and other such public places creating unnecessary filth and clutter. The culprits in most of the cases are shopkeepers, followed by bird lovers.

The penalty ranges between rupees 500 for a first timer and rupees 1000 for the second time. (Nothing has been told about the third time though.)

The issue has been more visible in Kharghar and residents have been highlighting it through various mediums in recent times. A group of people affiliated to Swach Kharghar Foundation, have been highlighting the issue through whatsapp.

Authorities plan to send notices to shop owners telling them not to feed pigeons and believe that it will discourage them from doing so.

There are others who are rooting for designated spots for feeding birds, an idea many approve of.

CIDCO floats 3 tenders before poll code of conduct

Navi Mumbai: The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO) has floated 3 tenders collectively worth Rs 19,000 crore just before the model code of conduct sets in. This makes it obvious that three projects of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) will have to be finalised before the elections.

Two out of the tree tenders are for coastal roads costing Rs 983 crore.

The first tender is of a first of a kind toll-free gateway to SoBo – worth Rs 711 crore Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) coastal road (measuring 5.8 km) with three bridges.

A second coastal road (measuring 9.5 km) will connect Kharghar with upcoming airport and the water terminal to be developed in Nerul.

The said corridor will also help connect with the proposed Kharghar corporate park.

The coastal roads will get the green nod by the time the tenders are finalized and handed over to the lowest bidder.

The third and the biggest tender is the mega housing scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) which also happens to be the biggest PMAY scheme to be undertaken. It will cost 18,000 crore to build around 89,771 tenements for the economically weaker section (EWS) and low income group (LIG) under affordable housing scheme.

Under such there will be two stages with four packages.

Out of the total flats to be built, a major chunk of the flats will be for the EWS (53,483) under the PMAY scheme.

Families with a monthly income of Rs 25,000 besides other qualification will be entitled for EWS houses and those with up to Rs 50,000 monthly income can apply too. In all, 36, 288 LIG flats will be constructed under the project.

The housing scheme project has roped in Hafeez Contractor who had finalized the design before the tender was floated.
