Disney’s Mulan, New Mutants and Antlers won’t be released as scheduled, amid coronavirus fears

The three Disney movies have been postponed until new release dates are decided upon

Movie goers will have to wait a little longer for Disney’s much awaited and biggest release of the year and live-action remake “Mulan”, starring Liu Yifei and directed by Niki Caro, amid growing fear surrounding coronavirus. With China being at the epicenter of both the disease and the release of the movie, things seem bleak as far as the release is concerned . Initially scheduled to be released on 27th March, 2020, the release date has now been pushed further to an indefinite date, variety informed.

Mulan, made on a budget exceeding 200 million dollars, is a very important movie for Disney this year and expectations have been very high for a spectacular opening at theatres around the world. Ironically, the biggest hopes have been from the Chinese territory as the movie depicts one of the biggest stories from the history of China. Although Disney had not fixed a date for the movie’s release in China, it is obvious that it won’t be a wise decision to release it as planned, with China struggling to get back on it’s feet and defeat the novel virus.

The second Disney movie to be postponed is “The New Mutants”, the jinxed new phase of the X-Men universe (If we can call it so). Scheduled to be released on 3rd April, 2020, after being delayed for over three years, the movie is postponed yet again. Frankly, the movie and the horror-plot it revolves around has already lost it’s shine for being delayed for so long and being delayed yet again just adds to it’s woes.

The third movie that Disney has postponed is yet another horror movie “Antlers” directed by Scott Cooper. The movie is yet another parcel that came along with the acquisition of 21st Century Fox and was scheduled to be released on 17th April, 2020. The anticipation around the movie has been good so far as fans await to see how the movie based on Nick Antosca’s short story “The Quiet Boy” turns out to be.

The next big movie for Disney this year is “Black Widow” as it is supposed to kick start Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is scheduled to be released on 1st May, 2020. A lot of anticipation is built around the movie as it would shape the way MCU would move forward henceforth.

Disney, as well as other production houses that have postponed their movies, now hope, that the coronavirus crisis ends soon.

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai International Airport may still get delayed as GVK, the majority shareholder has asked the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd. (CIDCO), who holds 26 % of equity in the SPV—Navi Mumbai international airport limited (NMIL), to hand over a fully vacant land to begin construction work.

Since 2018, CIDCO has cleared 97% of the land, demolishing all structures but the land is yet to be encumbrance free, as the Mumbai international airport limited (MIAL) that has 74% equity in the SPV-NMIAL that will develop the airport, had demanded recently.

Apparently, the SPV has not yet issued the work order to L&T.

GVK has informed that work won’t commence unless encumbrance free land was handed over just like in the case of Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports. GVK had constructed the Bengaluru airport.

In the meanwhile, MIAL has informed that it will issue work order only when the entire airport land was vacated and handed over.

Officials at CIDCO informed that though they were positive about vacating the airport land in entirety, there was a provision in the agreement that allowed simultaneous development work during the process of eviction.

Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray asks the environment department to look into the destruction of Uran wetlands

Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray asks the environment department to look into the destruction of Uran wetlands

by Staff Reporter February 23, 2020
written by Staff Reporter

Navi Mumbai / Uran: Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray, has asked the environment department to look into the alleged destruction of Uran wetlands, responding to the the hue and cry of environmentalists in the area.

Responding promptly to the situation, Thackeray has asked the authority to look into the destruction of mangroves and wetlands in Uran, namely at Pagote, Bhendkhal and Panje. The administration had already lodged police cases against unidentified persons under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.

Also, Panje is marked as a marshy land belonging to the state government in the official records of land acquisition by the revenue department. It has been a fishing site for locals since ages. Surprisingly, CIDCO had recently announced that Panje wetland had been transferred to a private corporate firm in the year 2004. An RTI application had further revealed that parts of Panje wetlands had been leased to the NMSEZ.

The flow of creek water to Panje had been blocked turning it into a dry land and even a huge concrete wall was erected. The Mangrove and Wetlands committees appointed by the high court had asked CIDCO to ensure the flow of water to the wetland and also to protect Panje as it had all the characteristics of a wetland.

The wetland committee had asked CIDCO to restore Bhendkhal wetland and remove the landfill but nothing had been done till now.

While this continues, there is an ongoing crisis at Seawoods where environmentalists are trying hard to save the wetlands, where the development authority plans to construct a Golf Course Integrated Project.

Now environmentalists and locals hope that CM Uddhav Thackeray understands the situation and directs the concerned authorities to stop the exploitation of the wetlands for financial pursuits.

Activists irked as CIDCO omits Board Resolutions from website

by Staff Reporter February 15, 2020
written by Staff Reporter

Navi Mumbai/ CBD-Belapur: City activists and citizens are irked as the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO) has ceased publishing board resolutions on their website. Questions are being raised on the intent of such a move.

Apparently activists are angered by the development authority’s move to hide such important details from the citizens as they are affected by it in one way or another. An attempt to enquire about such decision under Section 4 of the RTI Act too did not avail any response from CIDCO.

Just to brief readers a bit, CIDCO’s Board Resolution meetings are decisive meetings and developments ranging in areas like roads, environment, railway stations, the new airport and other such work.

Citizens are now awaiting a formal response from CIDCO on a move that lacks transparency.

Oscars 2020 Winners: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress and More

by VickyTM February 10, 2020
written by VickyTM
Much to the everyone’s surprise, Parasite won the best picture award, actress Renée Zellweger made a huge comeback and won the best actress award and everyone’s favourite this year, Joaquin Phoenix, took away the award for best actor.
Oscars 2020 Winners: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress and More
Clockwise: Joaquin Phoenix, Bong Joon-ho, Brad Pitt and Renée Zellweger

With or without a host, the 92nd Academy Awards was an event that didn’t fail to entertain and impress movie lovers around the world. Though simply steered by the presenters who came out to give away the Oscars, the show still had it’s nail biting moments as some movies performed as expected while some beyond expectations.

1917, everyone’s favourite for the best picture award, didn’t fail to impress by winning 3 awards – Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography and Best Sound Mixing. However, it did not win the Best Picture award as a far better and impressive film emerged as winner.

Parasite by Bong Joon-ho, stole the show and won 4 awards – Best original screenplay, International feature film, Best director and surprisingly the Best Picture award. The overjoyed cast and crew of the movie remarked that they had thought that the awards function was wrapped up for them after the Best International Feature Film award. Also, Parasite now became the first ever international film to win an Oscar for Best Film. The South Korean film was the first foreign-language movie to win the top award. It also won best director, best international film and best original screenplay.

The award that turned out as everybody had predicted and hoped for and were waiting eagerly (including us) was that of the Best Actor, given out to Joaquin Phoenix! What a pleasant moment that turned out to be. He deserved it for all that he had given to the character of ‘Joker’ and we had written earlier why he had to win the award. You can read the article here in case you missed it: Will Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker laugh at the Oscars

(We had hoped the same for Scarlett Johansson for her double nominations but the decision makers made the right choice by giving away the Best Actress award to Renée Zellweger.)

Renée Zellweger won the Best Actress award for her impressive portrayal of Judy Garland in the film ‘Judy’ and she totally deserved it. She has proved that her acting skills have only improved with her ageing but are touching new heights. Now this is one accomplishment she will surely note down in ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’.

Brad Pitt won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role of stuntman Cliff Booth in Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ and during his acceptance speech, made a funny remark on Trump’s impeachment trials and how the Senate voted against the allowing of witnesses.

He remarked, “They told me I only had 45 seconds up here, which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week. I’m thinking maybe Quentin (Tarantino) does a movie about it and in the end the adults do the right thing.”

Laura Dern won her first ever Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role of Nora Fanshaw, a tough and blunt divorce attorney, after being nominated twice in the past, for Best Actress Best Supporting Actress. A visibly overjoyed and emotional Dern couldn’t help praising her parents and also role models, “Some say, never meet your heroes. I say if you’re really blessed, you get them as your parents,” she said emotionally. She further added, “I share this with my acting legends, my heroes, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. You’ve got game. I love you.”

There were some well-deserved wins in the other nominations as well this year and below is a complete list of Oscar 2020 Winners.

Scarlett Johansson’s double nomination at the Oscars could be an indication of what’s to unwrap at the 92nd Academy Awards, 2020, for the 5 wonderful actresses nominated for the Best Actress awards.
Scarlett Johansson’s double nominations at the Oscars 2020: Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress

Movie lovers around the world are more excited than ever as they await the final verdict at the Academy’s this Sunday. Some are going to win the Oscars while some are going to win the masses’ love and support alone. But that is enough trophy for a true artist.

Coming back to the nominations for the Best Actress, we have some great performances by Renee Zellweger, Charlize Theron, Cynthia Erivo, Saoirse Ronan and Scarlett Johansson, who stands out from the rest of the nominees not just for her acting but also for the nominations she has received.

Scarlett Johansson’s Oscar 2020 nominations

Well, this year, Scarlett has been nominated for two films one being ‘Marriage Story’ by Noah Baumbach, where she plays the role of Nicole Barber, an actress struggling between her marriage, divorce and career, and the second film ‘Jojo Rabbit’ where she plays the role of the mother of the main protagonist ‘Jojo’, who’s struggling to maintain a balance between his German-Nazi beliefs, the love of his mother, a newfound friend, along with the so-called mentoring of Adolf Hitler, a funny and imaginary friend of his.

So that makes it two nominations for the Oscars 2020.

So why are Scarlett Johansson’s Oscars 2020 nominations special?

Well, by being nominated for two categories Scarlett Johansson has become the 12th actor in the history of the Academy Awards to have been nominated for acting roles in the same year. If that is not something worth noticing then the mere fact that the panel has selected her for two separate roles, signifies the intent of the panel and the outcome that would follow; She would win both the awards or at least one of them.

So, Scarlett Johansson could be the one who takes home an Oscar this year!

Oscars 2020: 5 Nominations for Best Actress
Clockwise from top left: Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, Cynthia Erivo, Saoirse Ronan and Renee Zellweger (center).

The 92nd Academy Awards has some tough competition this year with 5 actresses being nominated for Best Actress category. Needless to say, the Oscars will see some nail-biting moments for movie lovers as well as the actresses.

The nominees for Best Actress are as follows:

Renee Zellweger for her role of ‘Judy Garland’ in the film ‘Judy’.

The ‘Bridget Jone’s Diary’ actress, Renee Zellweger, is the strongest contender this year to take away the Oscar for Best Actress for her stellar performance in the movie ‘Judy’ where she portrays the role of the popular singer-actress Judy Garland. Having already won the BAFTA and Golden Globes Awards for the role, she stands a great chance to sweeping the Oscars too.

Cynthia Erivo for her role of ‘Harriet Tubman’ in the film ‘Harriet’.

Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of ‘Harriet Tubman’, who had escaped slavery to become one of the greatest civil rights activists known, in the biopic ‘Harriet’, directed by Kasi Lemmons, could give a tough competition to the rest of the nominees. This is Cynthia’s first ever Academy Awards nomination and shows great potential to win an Oscar.

Scarlett Johansson for her role of ‘Nicole Barber’ in the movie ‘Marriage Story’.

Scarlett Johansson’s role of Nicole in the movie ‘Marriage Story’, directed by Noah Baumbach, has got Scarlett her first nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. The movie portraying the lives of a married couple with a kid, going through the pain of divorce despite the love that they have for each other, has been praised by audiences worldwide. Surprisingly, Scarlett has also been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie ‘Jojo Rabbit’ which is yet another outstanding movie nominated for the Best Film award. So, Scarlett has two shots at the Oscars this year.

Charlize Theron for her role of ‘Meghan Kelly’ in the movie Bombshell

Charlize Theron, the Academy Awards winner for Best Actress in the film ‘Monster’ in 2004, has been nominated for her amazing performance in the film ‘Bombshell’ by Jay Roach, where she plays the role of ‘Meghan Kelly’, a popular and bold newscaster. This is her third such nomination.

Saoirse Ronan for her role of ‘Josephine March’ in the movie ‘Little Women’.

The 2018 Golden Globe Awards winner, Saoirse Ronan, has been hailed for her role of ‘Josephine March’ in the film ‘Little Women’ by Greta Gerwig. Saoirse plays the role of an author who experiences the many joys and pains of growing into adulthood along with her three sisters. This is the third such nomination for Saoirse after being nominated for her role in ‘Brooklyn’ in 2016 and later for her role in ‘Lady Bird’ in the year 2018.

Oscars 2020: 9 Best Picture Nominees

by VickyTM February 8, 2020
written by VickyTM
Clockwise from top left: Ford V. Ferrari, The Irishman, 1917, Jojo Rabbit, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Parasite, Marriage Story, Joker and Little Women (center).

On February 9, 2020, Sunday night, the 92nd Academy Awards will bestow the best of the best with the prestigious Oscars, the dream of every film maker, actor, actress and other technical people. This year, 9 movies have been nominated for the Best Picture award and when the sound of ‘And the Oscar for the Best Picture goes to….’ echoes in the air, everyone will be at the edges of their seats.

Following are the nominations for Best Picture for the Oscars 2020:

FORD V. FERRARI

Starring Matt Damon as Carroll Hall Shelby and Christian Bale as Ken Miles, Ford v Ferrari is a movie that many loved for the direction of James Mangold. The two lead actors did best to portray emotions amid a drama based on Ford Motor’s attempt to build a car that could beat the fastest car in the world at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Other nominations: Best Film Editing, Sound Editing & Sound Mixing

THE IRISHMAN

The Irishman banks on the names and acting talent of some of the biggest starts Hollywood has known. Starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci & Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese’s presentation of the crime memoir ‘I Heard You Paint Houses’ portrays the lonely and purposeless lives of the mafia men who somehow elude death.

Other nominations: Best Supporting Actor (Al Pacino & Joe Pesci), Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Production design, Best Visual Effects and Best Adapted Screenplay.

JOJO RABBIT

Starring Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo, Thomasin McKenzie as Elsa, Scarlett Johansson as Rosie and Taika Waititi as Adolf Hitler, Jojo Rabbit is an adaptation of the book Caging Skies by Christine Leunens. Director Taika Waititi, who has also directed Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi, takes Jojo Rabbit down a rabbit hole of sorts with his ‘anti-hate-sattire’ black comedy about a 10-year-old boy, Jojo, a member of the Hitler Youth, who finds out that his mother has been hiding a Jewish girl inside the walls of their house. The most distinct aspect of the movie is Waititi playing the part of a funny Adolf Hitler.

Other nominations: Best Supporting Actress (Scarlett Johansson), Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design and Best Adapted Screenplay

JOKER

We would be surprised if any of you would not have seen or heard about Todd Phillips’ Joker, a movie that has been the talk of the town for many reasons, one being the marvelous performance of Joaquin Phoenix, who wooed everyone with his hysterical laugh and ongoing mental struggle. It would be a shame if he did not win the Oscar for the Best Actor at least, even if the movie gave way for 1917, the strongest competitor and likely winner of the Best Film category.

Other nominations: Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix), Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Adapted Screenplay

LITTLE WOMEN

Louisa May Alcott’s novel Little Women got a fresh breeze of narration in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation starring Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Eliza Scanlen as Beth, Florence Pugh as Amy and Emma Watson as Meg. The story jumped back and forth into the lives of the March sisters, portraying their desires and emotions with a somewhat vague ending. The powerful performances of the actors were loved by many who could relate them to their own relationships with their sisters.

Other nominations: Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Florence Pugh), Best Costume Design, Best Original Score and Best Adapted Screenplay.

MARRIAGE STORY

Directed by Noah Baumach, the movie is an emotional drama of sorts portraying the lives of a stage director Charlie (Adam Driver) and Nocole (Scarlett Johansson) dealing with the emotional intricacies of divorce. The story took viewers through a grueling experience based on the relevance of the subject with the masses, especially the divorced.

Other nominations: Best Actor (Adam Driver), Best Actress (Scarlett Johansson), Best Supporting Actress (Laura Dern), Best Original Score and Best Original Screenplay.

A cinematic marvel by Sam Mendes, who had also directed Skyfall and Revolutionary Road, 1917, is the story of the journey of two British soldiers through a war ridden territory during the World War I, to deliver an important message that could avert the disaster that awaits another unit posted at a distant place. While the movie takes viewers through the many horrors that war tend to bring along, the clear winner is the impeccable cinematography. Cinematographer Roger Deakins who is recognized for No Country for Old Men and Skyfall, weaves magic into the movie and adds new meaning to the single-shot cinematography. The movie may go on to be win a well-deserved Best Film Oscar.

Other nominations: Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Screenplay

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, set in Los Angeles in the 1969s. It revolves around Television star Rick Dalton played by Leonardo DiCaprio and his longtime stunt double and friend Cliff Booth played by Brad Pitt, as they come back to an industry that is nothing like it used to be. The story cleverly weaves around the Tate-LaBianca murders of 1969 that had shocked the industry.

The long winding story with multiple storylines is nothing less than a tribute to the golden age of Hollywood and the lives it had changed for good or bad.

Other nominations: Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Supporting Actor (Brad Pitt), Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Original Screenplay

PARASITE

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite is a masterpiece in it’s own and stands out for the engaging satire that it is. The movie is well written and directed and takes viewers in a journey of revelations. The best part is that it become really unpredictable engaging the audience in a positive way. The somewhat absurd plot moves forward with exceptional yet simple performances by Jang Hye-jin, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, and Song Kang-ho. The movie tells how unfairness in the world could lead to the moral decline of the society. It may win the Oscar for Best International Film

Other nominations: Best Director, Best International Film, Best Production Design and Best Original Screenplay
