Navi Mumbai / Panvel: The Kamothe police filed an FIR against a Panvel based circus, for cruelty against animals. They were found to be illegally using animals like camels, dogs, horses and emus for daily performances. A police complaint was made by alert members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India and Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) regarding the illegal use of these animals by Great Bharat Circus.
The Kamothe police filed the FIR under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, sections 22 and 26 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, for using animals for performances without registering with the AWBI; section 11(1) (a) of the PCA Act, 1960, for treating animals cruelly; and Section 11(1)(b) for using unfit wounded animals.
The team that inspected the circus included representatives of the district collector, members of AWBI and the police. It was revealed that some of the animals that were being used illegally included two emus, two camels, a horse, a mule, and seven dogs.
