20 benefits or advantages of eating street food

by Tamanna Malhotra June 12, 2024
written by Tamanna Malhotra

Street food – it’s quick, affordable, and oh-so-delicious. But beyond just the price and convenience, there are numerous subtle advantages to eating street food that often go overlooked. As someone who’s been part of this vibrant street food culture for years, I can confidently tell you that street food does much more than just satisfy hunger. It’s an experience that brings together people from different walks of life, strengthens local communities, and even fuels the global economy. Having sampled countless street food dishes from all over, here are 20 reasons why you should embrace this culinary treasure.

Following are the 20 benefits or advantages of eating street food

1. Street food is the food of the masses

Let’s be honest – street food is the people’s food. Whether you’re a student surviving on a tight budget or someone seeking a quick bite during a busy day, street food is there for you. I’ve seen countless friends and colleagues indulge in a tasty street snack between work breaks, often with a few quid to spare. From small bites to hearty meals, it provides something for everyone, without discriminating based on wealth or social standing.

2. Street food brings together different cultures and races

One of the beautiful things about street food is its ability to bring people together. Whether it’s a bustling market in Bangkok, a cart in the heart of London, or a food stall in a small rural village, street food creates a sense of unity. It’s where cultures meet, exchange, and share their culinary heritage with others. I can tell you from personal experience – some of the best conversations I’ve had have been over a shared plate of street food, learning about different traditions while savouring a delicious bite.

3. Street food lets you taste authentic global cuisines

Here’s a fact I’ve learned through years of travelling and tasting: street food often gives you the most authentic version of global cuisines. I recall an unforgettable experience in Mexico, where I had authentic tacos on a street corner that were far better than anything I’ve had in restaurants. Local vendors serve dishes from their own cultures with a love and passion you can’t find in a commercialised restaurant. These dishes often tell a story – of history, heritage, and local traditions.

4. Street food helps support local families and individuals

20 benefits or advantages of eating street food

Many street food vendors operate as small family-run businesses. When you buy from them, you’re directly contributing to their livelihood. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know several street food vendors, and I can attest to the hard work and dedication they put into their carts. For them, it’s not just about food – it’s about providing for their families. So, every time you grab a bite, you’re not just eating – you’re making a difference.

5. Street food binds local communities together

Street food has an incredible power to bring people together. I’ve seen it firsthand in several countries – families, friends, and even strangers bonding over a shared meal in a street food market. In a world where social isolation is all too common, street food hubs create a sense of belonging. They’re places where communities come together, share stories, laugh, and connect.

6. Street food provides many indirect job opportunities

Beyond the vendors themselves, the street food industry creates a host of other job opportunities. From food bloggers to photographers, from delivery drivers to event organisers, street food has spurred a whole ecosystem of employment. Personally, I’ve met countless content creators who’ve turned their passion for street food into full-time careers, inspiring thousands with their stories and photos.

7. Street food drives tourism across the world

Street food is no longer just about locals; it’s a major draw for tourists. I’ve often found myself planning my trips around the street food scene, especially after reading rave reviews from fellow travellers. Whether it’s a local dish or a rare delicacy, street food plays a massive role in driving tourism and boosting economies. After all, food is an essential part of experiencing a new place!

8. Street food is a boon for office goers, especially bachelors

As someone who’s worked long hours in a corporate job, I can say that street food is a lifesaver. For office-goers – especially bachelors – street food offers a quick and affordable meal without the hassle of cooking. I remember countless days when I would grab a quick sandwich or kebab on my way to work. The convenience is unbeatable, and it’s often the best part of the day.

9. Street food carts are boons for young lovers

Let’s not forget that street food provides the perfect backdrop for young couples looking for a budget-friendly date. The atmosphere of a bustling street food market, with its lights, sounds, and scents, sets the stage for memorable moments. I’ve seen many young lovers share their first date over a plate of hot samosas or a bowl of noodles. It’s casual, fun, and most importantly, affordable.

10. Street food provides breakfast for many homes

For many households, especially in busy cities, street food is the go-to breakfast option. People juggling hectic schedules often rely on street vendors for a quick, tasty breakfast. I’ve personally relied on my local street food vendor for a steaming cup of masala chai and a delicious plate of idli in the morning. It’s simple, satisfying, and a great way to start the day.

11. Street food is a cheap and safe option for hitchhikers

Hitchhiking is all about budget-friendly travel, and street food is the perfect companion. Having hitchhiked across several countries, I can attest to the fact that street food is not only affordable but also safe. I’ve eaten from countless street vendors while on the road, knowing that the food was fresh and made with care. For travellers like me, it’s often the highlight of the journey.

12. Street food is a mental booster for many people

There’s something about street food that lifts your spirits. Whether it’s the nostalgia of childhood flavours or the simple joy of eating on the street with friends, street food can be an emotional comfort. I’ve found that after a long, stressful day, grabbing a quick bite from a local food cart can completely change my mood. The smell, the taste – it’s like a warm hug for the soul.

13. Street food is better than modern junk food

Contrary to popular belief, street food isn’t just “junk food.” In fact, it’s often much healthier than the processed junk food many of us are tempted to buy. I’ve found that the ingredients in street food are usually fresh and natural – far from the processed rubbish you’ll find in fast food chains. Plus, street food is often prepared in front of you, so you know exactly what goes into your meal.

14. Street food hubs are happening venues of sorts

Street food hubs aren’t just about eating – they’re social spaces. They’re where people gather, chat, laugh, and soak in the lively atmosphere. I’ve spent countless evenings at street food markets, not just enjoying the food but also enjoying the dynamic energy of the place. It’s a cultural experience that’s far more vibrant than the sterile, quiet environment of a restaurant.

15. Street food is cheap food and pretty affordable

One of the biggest draws of street food is its affordability. But don’t let the low prices fool you into thinking the quality is compromised. More often than not, street food offers a bang for your buck – tasty, filling, and satisfying. And it’s accessible to everyone, whether you’re a student on a budget or someone just looking for a quick meal on the go.

16. Street food has a variety to choose from

When it comes to variety, street food is second to none. I’ve lost count of the number of dishes I’ve tried at street food hubs – everything from spicy kebabs in Istanbul to fresh sushi in Japan. The range of options available means there’s something for everyone, no matter your taste.

17. Street food hubs and corners are social network areas

20 benefits or advantages of eating street food

Street food hubs also serve as great networking spots. Over a meal, I’ve had discussions that have led to business collaborations, made new friends, and even found mentors. Food has this unique ability to break down barriers and foster connections.

18. Most street food carts and stalls sell good quality food

Despite what some people may believe, many street food vendors take great pride in the quality of their food. I’ve found that the best street food vendors use fresh ingredients, and they often prepare their meals with the same love and care as they would for their own families.

19. Street food carts are open to your inspection

20 benefits or advantages of eating street food

Unlike restaurants, street food carts are open for you to inspect. From the ingredients to the cleanliness, you can see exactly what’s going into your food. I’ve always appreciated this transparency, and I find it reassuring to know that I’m eating food that’s freshly prepared right in front of me.

20. Different seasons bring back the joy of different street foods

One of the best parts of street food is the seasonal variations. In winter, you’ll find hot soups and hearty snacks; during the monsoon, crispy fritters; and in summer, refreshing ice creams and fruit-based desserts. Each season brings its own unique offerings, and I personally look forward to those seasonal specials.

Eating street food safely: Precautions and handy tips for travellers

by Vishal TM June 12, 2024
written by Vishal TM

Well, fellow traveller, as we all know, street food can be a sensory-rich experience of experiencing the food cultures around the world, especially for those who want to experience it all, street food tops the itinerary. The aroma of sizzling skewers, the sizzle of a hot wok, and the colorful array of tempting dishes. However, as a traveller you should know that there are many pros and cons of street food. Hence, to ensure that your street food escapades are memorable for all the right reasons, it’s essential to take some simple yet crucial precautionary steps.

let us see how we can explore street food cautiously and responsibly.

1. Stick to your food preferences and be wary of your allergies

Nobody knows your food habits better than you, so before you step into a bustling street to taste some lip-smacking delicacies, wait and reflect on your personal food habits. You may be a carnivore, vegetarian or vegan, so be aware of your food habits to be able to make wise street food choices. The most importantly thing is to be always mindful of your food allergies or dietary restrictions. It is always wise to eat what you can and simply avoid what you can’t.

2. Priortise the food quality and general hygiene of the vendor

Street food can without doubt be a kind of local culinary revelation, but it can also pose potential risks if not selected properly. Remember, not all street food is good food. As a rule, look for vendors who follow good hygiene practices, and opt for dishes that are cooked to order or freshly prepared. Avoid pre-cooked foods that have been sitting out for extended periods.

3. Dont’t overlook your medical conditions and special dietary needs

If you have specific medical conditions, such as diabetes, celiac disease or any othe such disease, then you should be very specific about the kind of street food you eat. Make it a point to always carry your prescriptions, essential medications, snacks, or special dietary items along.

4. Master the art of selecting the right street food stall

Choosing the best street food cart can be an art form in itself. Follow these tips to make your selections wisely:

Crowds Don’t Lie

Vendors with a steady stream of local customers are often a safe bet. Locals know where to find the best eats.

Cleanliness is Key

Observe the cleanliness of the vendor’s workspace, utensils, and the vendor themselves. These signs can give you a sense of how clean your food will generally be.

Cook to Order

Opt for dishes that are cooked fresh, right in front of you as it reduces the chances of food contamination.

Check Local Reviews

In the age of smartphones, local food reviews and recommendations are just a click away. “It’s a good idea to check food apps and websites for local culinary tips.

5. Responsible Eating: Don’t Mix What Can’t Be Mixed

While street food invites experimentation, exercise caution when combining dishes or ingredients that may not pair well. Well, we cant deny that mixing flavors and textures can be fun but you should be mindful of your stomach’s limits.

6. Keep food safety products handy

Carry a small arsenal of food safety products to enhance your street food experience:

  • Hand Sanitizer: Keep your hands clean before digging into your delicious finds.
  • Reusable Utensils: Consider packing travel-friendly utensils to avoid using disposable plastic ones.
  • Wet Wipes: Handy for cleaning hands and surfaces.

7. Carry health and digestion supplements

Many travelers these days bring along health supplements like probiotics and digestive enzymes. “Supplements like these can keep your tummy happy when trying unfamiliar foods abroad.

So you see, exploring street food around the world can be a wonderful adventure and you can turn it into a cherishable one. There are many benefits or advantage of eating street food when travelling, and these simple precautionary points will enable you to not only savour the many delights of street food, but also maintain your physical health.

8. Stay Hydrated, but choose your beverages wisely

You have all heard about staying hydrated when on the move, exploring street food, especially in hot climates. However, you should be mindful of what you drink to remain hydrated – not every drink you can buy from street vendors is healthy enough. Your first priority should always be bottled water, then any other sealed bottled drink. And though freshly squeezed juices can be refreshing by the looks, dirty utensils and water could give you an upset tummy or more.

9. Understand local food safety practices

Like it is in your country, there are varying standards and practices for food safety in different countries. Try to find out about local customs and food safety guidelines in the country, city and areas you plan to visit. While this may sound burdensome, it would really help you make informed decisions and reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. Street food is always about engaging with local street food lovers, so why not mingle with the ones you find around? You can talk around a whole lot of things while having street food, while also making sure that you are eating at the right vendor.

Always rememeber that with a dash of wisdom and a sprinkle of curiosity, your street food adventures can be the highlight of your travel journeys.

So go out and eat responsibly!

According to local property agents, prices have already shown signs of escalation post the inauguration of the MTHL, which has picked up the momentum that the commencement of the Navi Mumbai Metro’s service had started. This momentum of growth and escalation of price is expected to scale further as the most ambitious project of Navi Mumbai – The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIL) is next in line for completion.

Developer members participating in the CREDAI-BANM Raigad 7th Property Expo 2024 are urging prospective buyers to make a move at the earliest and get a piece of their dream homes before the prices escalate further because the “current prices won’t remain the same in future”.

Over 100 participating developers with over 400 properties being exhibited

The CREDAI-BANM-Raigad Property Expo 2024 has drawn in the participation of 100 developers who are showcasing over 400 exclusive and some never-seen-before properties from around Raigad, mainly in localities like Pushpak Nagar, Ulwe, Taloja, Kamothe, Kalamboli, Roadpali, Panvel, Karanjade and several other upcoming ones.

A home for every budget at the CREDAI-BANM-Raigad Property Expo 2024

Developers are offering homes to fit into every budget, with properties ranging between Rs 25 lakhs and Rs 5 cr. As usual, affordable homes are the most sought after in this exhibition too.

Lucky draws for home buyers

Home buyers who book a property also have the opportunity to win a car, bike, mobiles etc., in lucky draws that are being held daily.

Lucky draws for visitors as well

This time around the developers have come up with a unique draw specially for visitors, every two hours, whether they buy a property or not!

CREDAI-BANM Raigad 7th Property Expo 2024: Venue, Dates, Timing and other details:

Installed at the CIDCO Exhibition Centre, Vashi, the magnificent structure is the main attraction of the CREDAI-BANM 22nd Mega Property Exhibition 2023.

Paradise Group brings the ‘Historical Colosseum’ to Navi Mumbai

At the heart of the 22nd Mega Property Exhibition hosted by CREDAI-BANM, from 1-4 December 2023, one structure stands triumphant, stealing the limelight from the impressive array of pavilions and property showcases. The Paradise Group has outdone itself this year too, presenting a realistic and colossal replica of the ‘Colosseum’ – the monumental Roman amphitheatre that once echoed with the cheers of ancient Rome. Visitors are left in awe at the sheer enigma of the installation!

For those who are unaware, every year the Paradise Group summons talents from across the globe to mesmerise visitors at the BANM Mega Property Exhibition – human statues showcasing unparalleled body control, entertaining foreigners delivering “Chai,” and chocolate-yielding beauties. It’s a spectacle that transcends the ordinary property exhibition, transforming it into a celebration of craftsmanship, creativity, and culture. Then, there is the kids zone that never fails to entertain kids who visit along with their parents.

However, this year’s installation by Paradise Group  transcends the ordinary. Unlike previous editions where structures merely adorned the surroundings, the grandiose Colosseum envelops the guest area, offering an immersive experience that transports visitors to ancient Rome without the gladiator battles, of course.

Captivating Russian Musicians

Also, there is an ensemble of beautiful and talented Russian musicians who play the violin and other instruments captivating everyone with their distinct style – they also play to some Bollywood tunes too.

Homebuyers Astonished

Prospective homebuyers, drawn to the event for property insights, found themselves equally captivated by the colossal masterpiece.

“It’s astounding to witness such craftsmanship. If they put this much detail into a temporary installation, I can imagine the quality of the construction of their projects,” remarked one impressed visitor.

Children Enchanted

The colossal spectacle has become a fairyland for children, sparking their imaginations in ways unimaginable. Some, having encountered a smaller replica at the Wonders Park garden in Nerul, are left in sheer awe by the grandeur on display at the exhibition.

“It’s like stepping into a history book, only better!” exclaimed a wide-eyed young visitor.

For those who are unaware, every year the Paradise Group summons talents from across the globe – human statues showcasing unparalleled body control, entertaining foreigners delivering “Chai,” and chocolate-yielding beauties. It’s a spectacle that transcends the ordinary property exhibition, transforming it into a celebration of craftsmanship, creativity, and culture. Then, there is the kids zone that never fails to entertain kids who visit along with their parents.

Colosseum Facts and Trivia

The Colosseum, situated in central Rome, was completed in AD 80, and could hold up to 80,000 spectators at a time. It hosted gladiator contests, public spectacles, and dramas. Steeped in history, the Colosseum remains an iconic symbol of ancient architectural brilliance, a testament to the enduring legacy of Rome.

So, dear readers, while you embark on the quest for your dream home, make sure to witness this architectural marvel by the Paradise Group. It’s not just about houses; it’s about the commitment to quality and creativity that developers like the Paradise Group bring to the table.

Visit the Mega Property Exhibition; marvel at the Colosseum – a timeless wonder that bridges the past and the present in the realm of real estate.

The exhibition ends on 4th December 2023.

Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 takes commuters on a joyous ride after a 12-year wait

Navi Mumbai: Finally breaking the 12-year-long anticipation, the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, linking Belapur and Pendhar, was thrown open to the public. Stuck for months in wait for a grand inauguration with political leaders and formalities, the even turned into an unexpectedly quiet affair. Giving in to the need and constant reminding by the residents, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra nudged the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) to kick off services without VIP fanfare, putting a smile on many eager faces.

On November 17, 2023, at 3 pm, the Navi Mumbai Metro embarked on its first commercial journey from Belapur, running till 10 pm that day. Even with the political fanfare the event was nothing short of jubilation and cheer, as people of all ages flocked to experience their maiden metro ride.

The stations buzzed with excitement as the welcoming staff at ticket counters, the check post and the platforms went above and beyond, greeting passengers with smiles, roses, and a contagious enthusiasm that set the tone for the day.

The atmosphere at the stations seemed like a carnival – children running around, elders savoring a new experience, and groups of youngsters turning the journey into a festivity with lively conversations and impromptu selfies.

Local news reporters added to the lively atmosphere, conducting interviews, capturing candid moments, and documenting the joyous occasion. As the sun set, a surprising number of office-goers, exiting Belapur and Kharghar railway stations, discovered a new travel option and opted for the metro to reach CBD, Kharghar, and Taloja, adding an unexpected but delightful twist to their usual routine.

The first day saw a remarkable response, with over 5000 tickets sold. Clearly, the Navi Mumbai Metro had not just become a mode of transportation but a symbol of communal celebration, a testament to the resilience and anticipation of the locals finally rewarded.

Residents expressed their heartfelt thankfulness towards the Chief Minister and CIDCO authorities for prioritizing their needs over political fanfare and throwing the metro open. In a world often overshadowed by political grandstanding, the silent inauguration spoke volumes about putting the people first. The metro, in its maiden journey, not only connected stations but hearts, fostering a sense of unity and gratitude among the residents.

Here are some quotes from happy commuters

Rohan Singh, an excited 10-year-old: “Oh, it was like riding EsselWorld’s best roller coaster, but better! The metro is like a magical train zipping through the city. So much fun! Can we do it again tomorrow?”

Fatima Shaikh, a elderly resident of Taloja: “I never thought I’d see the day when I’d ride a metro in Navi Mumbai. It was more comfortable than I expected. Smooth sailing! This city just keeps surprising me.”

Vaibhav Shinde, an office Goer: “The metro is a game-changer for my daily grind. Saves me time, and the comfy ride from Taloja to Kharghar station is like a mini-vacation. Who knew commuting could be this easy?”
