5 tips to choose the right plants for your garden

by Staff Reporter December 27, 2024
written by Staff Reporter

Choosing the right plants for your garden can make or break your gardening experience. The beauty and health of your garden rely heavily on selecting plants that thrive in your local conditions, from the soil type to the amount of sunlight. Whether you’re a novice gardener or an expert, understanding how to select plants suited to your garden’s environment is key to a flourishing space.

1. Understand Your Garden’s Microclimate

Before heading to the nursery, assess your garden’s microclimate. Is your garden exposed to full sunlight, partial shade, or deep shade? Knowing the sun patterns throughout the day can help you choose plants that will thrive in the light levels they’ll receive.

2. Consider Soil Type

Not all plants grow well in the same soil. Test your soil’s texture—whether it’s sandy, clay-heavy, or loamy—and adjust the plant choices accordingly. For example, Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and lavender prefer well-drained, sandy soils, while roses and tomatoes thrive in rich, loamy soil.

3. Select Plants Based on Your Climate

Check your hardiness zone and choose plants that are naturally suited to your area’s temperature fluctuations. This will prevent plant stress and reduce the need for excessive care, like extra watering or frost protection.

4. Factor in Maintenance Requirements

Some plants require a lot of attention, while others are low-maintenance. Be realistic about how much time you can dedicate to watering, pruning, and pest control. If you’re a busy gardener, opt for drought-tolerant or native plants that need minimal upkeep.

5. Think About Aesthetic Goals

Consider what you want your garden to look like. Are you aiming for a cottage garden full of blooms or a more structured, modern look? Use plants that fit the style you’re envisioning, whether it’s bold tropical foliage or a mix of colourful perennials.

Pro Tip: Visit local garden centres or botanical gardens to see what plants are thriving in your region. These are often great indicators of what will do well in your own garden.

Effective seasonal gardening tips for your garden

Effective seasonal gardening tips for your garden

by Staff Reporter December 20, 2024
written by Staff Reporter

Gardening is a year-round activity, but it’s important to adjust your practices as the seasons change. Each season brings different weather conditions, temperature fluctuations, and care requirements for your plants. Understanding what your garden needs in spring, summer, fall, and winter can keep it thriving all year long.

1. Spring: Prepare and Plant

Spring is the ideal time to prepare your soil and plant most annuals, perennials, and vegetables. Begin by clearing out any dead plant matter from the winter and applying compost to enrich the soil. Plant cold-hardy crops like spinach and peas early in the season, while waiting until the last frost has passed for warm-season plants like tomatoes and peppers.

2. Summer: Watering and Pest Control

During the hot summer months, consistent watering is crucial. Mulching around plants can help conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. Be on the lookout for pests that thrive in warm weather, like aphids and spider mites, and address any outbreaks early.

3. Fall: Clean Up and Divide Plants

In the fall, it’s time to clean up the garden by removing any dead or dying plants. Divide overcrowded perennials and plant spring-blooming bulbs like tulips and daffodils. Fall is also a great time to add organic matter to the soil to prepare it for the winter months.

4. Winter: Protect and Plan

Winter may seem like a slow time in the garden, but there’s still work to be done. Protect delicate plants from frost with coverings or move potted plants indoors. Use this downtime to plan next year’s garden and order seeds for spring planting.

5. Adapt to Local Climate

Gardening seasons vary based on your climate zone. In warmer regions, fall and winter can be prime growing seasons, while cooler climates may require more planning for frost protection. Adjust your gardening calendar to your local conditions for the best results.

Pro Tip: Keep a garden journal to track what works best for each season. This can help you fine-tune your gardening practices year after year.

Navi Mumbai hosts Thai Loy Krathong Festival: A feast of culture, cuisine & tradition

by Tamanna Malhotra November 14, 2024
written by Tamanna Malhotra

For the first time, Navi Mumbai is set to host a truly immersive celebration of Thailand’s Loy Krathong Festival, bringing together traditional Thai food, culture, and festivities. The festival, which runs across two weekends — November 15–17 and November 22–24, from 6:30 pm to 11:30 pm — is being organised by Four Points by Sheraton, Navi Mumbai, in collaboration with the Thai Consulate and Thailand Tourism. The event will take place at the hotel’s renowned Asian Kitchen restaurant, offering a vibrant atmosphere filled with Thai flavours, music, and cultural activities.

At the heart of the festival is the exquisite Thai buffet, curated by the culinary expertise of Chef Vina, a renowned Thai chef and instructor at DY Patil University. Guests can look forward to a tantalising array of traditional Thai dishes, including Tom Kah (Coconut Soup Veg), Tom Yum Kai (Hot and Sour Chicken Soup), and a variety of appetizers such as Sriracha Shrimps, Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce, and the festival’s namesake KraThong Tong (Golden Cups). The buffet also features main course delicacies like Thai Green Curry (Kang Keaw Waan), Panang Prawn Curry, and a live noodle counter serving fresh Ramen Noodles. For an extra touch, there will be a Barbecue Station to complement the meal.

To finish off the culinary journey, guests can indulge in traditional Thai desserts such as Thapthim Krop (Thai Red Rubies in Coconut Milk), offering a perfect sweet ending to the evening.

But the experience doesn’t end with the food. The festival also offers guests the opportunity to get hands-on with traditional krathong-making, where they can create their own floating baskets and release them into the pool — symbolising the release of past misfortunes and making a gesture of gratitude. The serene activity adds an extra layer of authenticity to the celebration. The evening will be further enhanced by traditional Thai music, setting a lively yet relaxing mood for the entire event. Guests will also have the chance to win exciting prizes in a lucky draw, courtesy of Thailand Tourism.

Loy Krathong, celebrated on the full moon night of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar, is a time for Thai people to show appreciation for the water spirits and release their troubles by floating krathongs on waterways. This festival is as much about the food as it is about connecting with age-old traditions, and this event in Navi Mumbai offers an opportunity to experience the magic of it all.

Thai food has garnered a loyal following across the globe, and it’s easy to see why. The dishes are bursting with complex flavours — a harmonious blend of spicy, sour, salty, and sweet elements that tantalise the taste buds. If you’ve never tried Thai food before, the Loy Krathong Festival is an excellent chance to dive into its rich culinary offerings. Personally, I can never resist a bowl of Tom Yum Soup — the balance of heat and tangy flavours is unmatched. If you’re a fan of bold, aromatic dishes, this festival promises to be an absolute treat.

Don’t miss out on this incredible cultural experience. Whether you’re a food lover, culture enthusiast, or simply looking to try something new, the Loy Krathong Festival in Navi Mumbai is an event to remember.

A guardian angel for Navi Mumbai’s street dogs

by Staff Reporter July 15, 2024
written by Staff Reporter

Neesha William’s life is an inspiring tale of selfless devotion to street dogs in the city of Navi Mumbai

In the bustling heart of Navi Mumbai, where the hum of city life rarely ceases, there exists a quiet yet powerful force of compassion named Neesha William. Known as the guardian angel of street dogs, Neesha’s story is a testament to the extraordinary impact one person can have through sheer empathy and dedication.

A lifeline during lockdown

Neesha’s journey began long before the world was gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her love for animals, especially street dogs, had always driven her to care for the forgotten canines of the city. However, it was during the lockdown that her commitment became a lifeline for these voiceless souls.

As the pandemic emptied the streets and confined people to their homes, the street dogs of Navi Mumbai faced a grim reality. With no one to feed them, their survival hung in the balance. But where there is darkness, there is also light, and for these dogs, Neesha was that light. Fearlessly braving the deserted streets, she became their saviour, ensuring no dog went hungry.

Going beyond food: Comprehensive care

Neesha’s efforts went far beyond merely feeding the dogs. She provided medical care, often nursing sick and injured dogs back to health. Her days were filled with visits to veterinarians, administering medicine, and ensuring the dogs had a safe place to recover. She even built temporary shelters to protect them from the elements.

Raising awareness and building community

Understanding that the plight of street dogs required a collective effort, Neessha dedicated herself to raising awareness among the local residents. She organized community drives and educational campaigns, encouraging others to join her mission. Her relentless advocacy started to change perceptions, gradually fostering a community of dog lovers who began to contribute to the cause.

Joining forces with Heart Foundation

In her relentless quest to improve the lives of street dogs, Neesha joined the Heart Foundation, an NGO dedicated to human and animal welfare. Through this partnership, she was able to amplify her impact, accessing more resources and expanding her reach. The foundation provided a platform for her to continue her work on a larger scale, allowing her to serve hundreds of dogs with food, medicine, and shelter.

A future of hope and compassion

Today, Neesha William’s efforts have transformed the lives of countless street dogs in Navi Mumbai. Her story is one of resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication. She continues to inspire others with her work, proving that a single person’s love and commitment can indeed make a world of difference.

As we reflect on Neesha’s journey, let it remind us of the profound impact we can have on the lives of those around us, human or otherwise. In a world that often overlooks the voiceless, Neesha William stands as a beacon of hope, compassion, and relentless kindness.

Will the first flight from Navi Mumbai International Airport take off in March 2025?

by Staff Reporter June 20, 2024
written by Staff Reporter

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, informed that 70% work on the NMIL has been completed.

First flight from Navi Mumbai International Airport could take off in March 2025

Main Story: Residents of Navi Mumbai can look forward to the long-awaited launch of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) in March 2025, as announced enthusiastically by Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol during his visit to Pune. With a deep understanding of the community’s anticipation, Mohol revealed that construction progress stands at 70%, well ahead of the original December 2024 target. Assuring the public, he assured that the final 30% will be completed on schedule.

The NMIA was earlier promised to start operations in the month of December 2024, but got delayed for several reasons. However, work was expedited in the months that followed, resulting the completion of 70% of the crucial infrastructure of the airport.

With Mohol promising the commencement of NMIA in less than a year from now, residents of Navi Mumbai are hopeful of the realisation of a long-cherished dream in sight, while also hoping that no new roadblocks show up again.

For those who are unaware, real estate prices in the areas surrounding the Navi Mumbai International Airport have already started increasing, first owing to the successful opening and running of the Mumbai Trans Link Harbour, named Atal Setu, and the slow but obvious completion of the NMIA. Developers and
property brokers have already started hiking property prices, and existing buyers and investors in the region have seen a decent appreciation in prices.

As a result of these mega projects, property prices in Ulwe, Uran, PCBD-Belapur, Kharghar, Kamothe, Kalamboli and Panvel have started to see a long-awaited appreciation. As the NMIA near completion, property rates will grow further, local property dealers assert.

In addition to the NMIA update, Mohol unveiled plans to expand Pune Airport, enhancing its capacity to accommodate larger aircraft. This expansion aims to bolster international connections and further integrate Pune into the global aviation network, a move welcomed by local businesses and travellers alike.
