Kharghar waterfalls, streams and ponds in good flow

The monsoons are here and like always water is flowing freely from small and big waterfalls in Kharghar, along with the streams and ponds

Kharghar waterfalls, streams and ponds in good flow
Many small waterfalls have started flowing at various places in Kharghar

Kharghar / Raigad / Navi Mumbai: The Kharghar waterfalls, namely Pandavkada waterfalls and Driving Range waterfalls, have started flowing with the amount of rain received a few days earlier.

Apart from the more popular waterfalls in Kharghar, small waterfalls and streams along the Kharghar Hills have also started flowing freely.

Ponds in Kharghar too have been overflowing with water with all the years’ garbage already been flushed out of them, and only fresh and clean water remaining in them.

There is lush greenery spreading across Kharghar Hills, gardens, parks and open spaces as the rains fall.

It may be noted here that a lockdown is in place and hence people are not allowed to venture out picnic spots in Kharghar, like the Pandavkda Hills, The Driving Ranger waterfalls or the Kharghar Hills.

A few days ago, the Kharghar police had even booked 67 people for ignoring the lockdown and venturing out to the Pandavkada Waterfalls and nearby places..

So, as people stay indoors, nature is blooming in Kharghar, first time in many years, without any human interruption.

The Taloja river is a wonderful natural location that runs from Taloja, all the way through Kharghar, into the creek. This particular spot is just behind the Vastu Vihar mass housing project in Kharghar and is an amazing place for nature lovers. There are some variety of birds for bird lovers, the calm river and a lonely street frequented by young boys and girls, to shoot photos and videos.

A must visit place throughout the year, especially during the rains .

Breaking the lockdown, ignoring social distancing norms were some of the reasons the police had to book many monsoon revellers at Kharghar

The Panavkada Waterfalls, Kharghar, has started flowing, owing to continuous rains, attracting revellers

Kharghar / Navi Mumbai: The Kharghar police has sprung into action to penalize anyone who takes the lockdown lightly. On Sunday, they took action many local residents who had ventured out to have some fun in the rains, ignoring the lockdown rules and regulations.

As monsoons have set in, all waterfalls have started flowing and some revellers have been going out during the day for a walk in the rains or to the area around Pandavkada Waterfalls.

However, what’s concerning is the fact that Navi Mumbai is under a strict lockdown owing to the growing number of coronavirus cases and loitering around without any specific purpose is strictly prohibited.

On Sunday, the police visited such spots, especially the Pandavkada Waterfalls and the Driving Range area and booked around 23 people for violating the lockdown norms.

Apart from that, they also booked people for purposeless roaming, not wearing masks, ignoring social distancing among other things.

In all, 67 people have been booked in the last two days.

A majority of monsoon revellers in Kharghar prefer to stay home amid COVID-19 fears

by Staff Reporter July 7, 2020
written by Staff Reporter

Though the rains have started, residents have no plans to visit waterfalls, dams or other picnic spots in Kharghar or anywhere else in Navi Mumbai

The Pandavkada Waterfalls and Driving Range Falls have begun flowing

Kharghar / Navi Mumbai: Monsoon has set in and Kharghar has turned into the green natural haven that it turns into every year, during the rainy season. The dry and parched Kharghar Hills and Hillocks have turned green and the open spaces are covered up with lush green carpets. Waterfalls of all sizes and shapes have begun flowing, especially everyone’s favourites, Pandavka Waterfalls and the Driving Range Waterfalls.

Sadly, revellers are staying home for good. Let’s see why.

To begin with, the administration has already banned visits to waterfall, dams and other picnic spots during the monsoons, in Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas.

In fact, in the last two days the Kharghar has booked some people who had visited the Pandavkada Waterfalls and nearby places, first for breaking the lockdown and second, for not following social distancing norms when outside, including not wearing of masks. The police promises to continue penalising those who break the rules.

In Kharghar, the Pandakada Waterfalls have already been off limits since a couple of seasons owing to the mishaps and deaths having taken place at the spot. As a result of which, the Driving Range waterfalls have been the most visited picnic spot in Kharghar during the rains.

Also read: Kharghar police book revellers at Pandavkada waterfalls and other places

Youngsters and families throng the driving range area every year in huge numbers, frolicking in the free flowing water stream. It is the most popular monsoon picnic spot in Kharghar.

However, people have been avoiding going to the waterfalls or other such places around Kharghar this year, owing to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the need for social distancing, the strict lockdown in place and a general feeling of dread of getting infected by the coronavirus.

Deepak P, a local resident, shares, “We plan an office picnic every year, and visit the Driving Range waterfalls as Pandavkada falls is a prohibited zone. But this year, we won’t be going anywhere as much as possible, owing to the lockdown in Navi Mumbai. We might go for a short outing near the waterfalls but not very sure about it. Don’t want to take risks.”

There are some local Kharghar residents who are enjoying the monsoons in solitude.

Ankit Kothiyal, a BPO executive, presently working from home, shares, “Working from home is taking a toll on everyone’s mental health as the inability to roam around freely or indulge in any form of recreational activity is exhausting.”

“The monsoons are here and I am a nature lover. However, this time it is very different as I have been cycling and trekking alone on the hillocks near Owe village tank. It feels refreshing after the trek. Before the pandemic we used to go out for picnics at the driving range or Kharghar hills but this time around we are all simply avoiding going out in groups. Most of us are hardly going out at all,” he adds further.

The police has put up boards warning people about visiting waterfalls or dams and have also been doing the rounds of such places.

Hatim Morkas, a student, shares, “The police has been warning about going to such places but even if they weren’t, we would have stayed home. This is not the time for fun when such a pandemic is threatening everyone’s lives. We will have fun next monsoons.”

While a majority of people are staying indoors there are some who are willing to take a change once the lockdown gets lifted.

Pari, a Panvel resident, shares, “After the lockdown gets over, I might go out to some nearby waterfall or water stream just to have fun for some time. I think it won’t be such a threat if we go out alone or with one or two friends. We will maintain social distancing and carry hand sanitisers too.”

A majority of people LocalPressIn spoke to were not in favour of going out to waterfalls in Kharghar or dams in Panvel or any picnic spots, as a precaution.

However, the real test will be once the lockdown gets over. We just hope that the administration monitors such locations more than ever and discourages people from visiting such places and endangering their lives and that of others.

We will keep you posted!

Navi Mumbai: There is a high probability that the Gokulashtami festival, or the Dahi Handi, that falls on 12th August, will be cancelled amid growing Covid-19 cases in Navi Mumbai. Many local mandals have already decided not to go with the celebrations like every year.

The Dahi Handi celebrations are carried out with great fervor every year with mandals offering huge prize money to participating groups from different parts of Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. Every year, hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts throng the streets of such venues to break handis and collect the prize money.

We spoke to a few local residents to know their views on the matter.

Suraj P., a Taloja residents and dahi handi enthusiast, shared, “There is no assurance that the Covid-19 crisis will abate anytime soon and social distancing strictly prohibits such gatherings at all costs. There is no need to increase the risks by organizing such events.”

While social distancing norms are enough to rule out dahi handi celebrations, some believe that there are other reasons too.

A local resident, not wanting to be named, shared, “There will be no donations coming from anywhere owing to the economic drain and hence even if mandals decided to carry out the celebrations in a safe manner, they would not get enough money required for the celebrations.”

Families too didn’t seem enthusiastic enough to participate in the celebrations.

Ranjana Choudhary, Kharghar resident and mother of three, shared, “We celebrate Gokulashtami every year and my three daughters love watching the dahi handi celebrations. However, this year we believe that there will be no such celebration as it would be very risky. We should postpone dahi handi and all such celebrations till a time the coronavirus crisis abates or a vaccine gets developed.”

Presently Navi Mumbai is under a lockdown for ten days from 3rd July to 13th July, owing to the huge spike in the number of Covid-19 cases. Given such conditions it becomes obvious that such celebrations will take a backseat for an indefinite period.

However, there has not been any official directive on the celebration of such festivals. We will be contacting the officials to know their views soon.

Bulbbul: Finally, a reinvented ‘Chudail’ makes an official appearance on Indian screens

by Staff Reporter July 1, 2020
written by Staff Reporter

Thanks to Anushka Sharma’s experimentation, Anvita Dutt’s creative visualization, Tripti Dimri’s captivating acting and some marvellous cinematography by Siddharth Diwan, we finally get to see a reinvented ‘Chudail’ with a purpose beyond just gory mindless killings.

Bulbbul: Finally a reinvented ‘Chudail’ makes an official appearance on Indian screens
Bulbbul is a Netflix presentation

We have to give it to Anushka Sharma – she and her bother Karnesh Sharma are trying their best to produce some different content in the horror genre. They gave us Phillauri, Pari (it was good, come on!) and now ‘Bulbbul’, a first of a kind movie that has managed to show us how mysteriously captivating our homegrown evil entity, ‘Chudail’, can look like.

So finally, we can boast before Hollywood fanatics – you got ghouls, death eaters, boogey man and their likes, and we got the ‘Chudail’. And guess what? Ours is the most beautiful kind of evil you could think of.

Anushka’s girl with the inverted legs can give the girls with the fish tails and sharp fangs, a run for their money!

No matter what the critics say or review, no one can deny the fact that for the first time in Indian film history, we have been able to see a creative portrayal of an Indian evil entity that we have all grown up hearing about, in Indian folklore and bedtime stories.

Nobody has shown us the ‘Chudail’ like Bulbbul does in a plot that revolves around child marriage, a long existent patriarchal society, self or women-empowerment, revenge and justice. The ’Chudail’ in Bulbbul is portrayed from different angels that even go on to compare her with the virtues of Durga and Kaali, fighting injustice in an extreme manner.

Ansuhka’s ‘Chudail’ is a Vigilante Every Woman Needs!

Bulbbul Film Synopsis/Plot Summary

Set in pre-independence Bengal Presidency, 1881, Bulbbul tells the story of a 5-yearold free spirited girl Bulbbul (Tripti Dimri), who is married off to rich man, Indranil (Rahul Bose) almost her father’s age or even more. She bonds closely with Satya (Avinash Tiwary), the youngest brother of her husband, and the one she thinks she’s being married to. Indranil has a twin brother called Mahendra, who’s mentally challenged but married to Binodini (Paoli Dam). Bulbbul and Satya strike a chord and become good friends with Satya narrating her a story about a ‘Chudail’ who used to wander around in the jungle flying from tree to tree. A story that captivates little Bulbbul beyond imagination.

The story goes back and forth in time explaining how Bulbbul and Satya had drawn close as they grew up together in a plutonic kind of way, how Binodini had filled up Indranil’s mind with doubt and insecurity concerning his wife and bother, and how Satya was sent away to London for further studies only to keep him away from Bulbbul.

It further shows how Indranil gives in to his inner demons and vents out his anger on Bulbbul almost crippling her and had then left the village forever. But the predicament of Bulbbul doesn’t end there and she gets brutally raped by Mahendra and dies after the assault, only to come back to life as a completely changed person.

Back in present times Satya is intrigued by his sister in law’s changed personality, that of a confident an assertive being. He is also very much concerned by her closeness to her doctor Sudip (Parambrata Chattopadhyay).

Adding suspense and thrill to the story are the mysterious killings of men in the village by a ‘Chudail’ or a witch, with turned legs. Satya gets busy finding the killer, who he thinks, is a man.

Satya’s growing concern for his sister in law and his anger and suspicion on Sudip for the killings bring the movie to a subtle climax, one filled with an overwhelming sense of realization and remorse.

What’s different in Bulbbul

Well, the most distinct feature of Bulbbul is the portrayal of a ‘Chudail’, in a never seen before manner. Unlike what we, as Indians, have grown up hearing about the beautiful evil woman who goes around killing people, especially men, Bulbbul shows us a beautiful, mysterious, justice seeking entity that doesn’t kill just for fun.

You will be able to relate the story to the Radha-Krishna love saga, the evil-destroying anger of Kali Mata and the suppression of women since mythological era and to some extent, the dark era of witch hunting (in Europe).

Apart from the fresh plot, the cinematography by Siddharth Diwan, stands out in every sense and manages to mesmerize the audience by the visuals alone, at times.

A still from the movie Bulbbul on Netflix

Bulbbul reinvents the ‘Chudail’ just like how Hollywood reinvented the character of ‘Maleficent’!

(Now, we can expect some cheap rip-offs of Bulbbul coming soon).

Though Bulbbul is not a spooky horror movie, it is the kind of movie that will engage you for many reasons, and also bring a new realization that evil too can have a purpose.

Best acting in Bulbbul:

Well, while Rahul Bose, Avinash Tiwary, Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Paoli Dam play their parts well enough, Tripti Dimri does a good job at portraying a character who is aware and guilty of everything that transpires in the main plot concerning the killings happening around.

She is self-occupied, constantly in some sort of mental struggle, keeps giggling and smiling for reasons known to her and at the mention of the predicament of the men around her.

We don’t know if she acted that way or it comes naturally to her as we did not see her other movies – Poster Boys and Laila Majnu.

To sum it up, Tripti was born to play the role!

Best Dialogue/s in Bulbbul:

There’s one when Bulbbul’s sister-in-law slowly whispers to her ‘Badi Haveliyon mein bade raaz hote hai’ and that lingers in your mind throughout the movie and even after that.

Best Scene/s in Bulbbul:

Visually, the scene in the beginning of the movie attempting to establish the character of a ‘Chudail’ is one of the best scenes. It is visually so good that it has also been used in the official trailer of Bulbbul.  In fact, that was the scene that actually made us watch the movie!

The climax scene, just before the credits roll up, is the best scene in the movie.

Also, the scene where the ‘Chudail’ is shown for the first time swinging from tree to tree, can pass for one of the best scenes too.

Avinash Tiwary in a still from the movie Bulbbul on Netflix
Avinash Tiwary in a still from the movie Bulbbul on Netflix

Adult scenes / suggestive language in Bulbbul:

Well, there is one rape scene in the movie which is a bit graphic and brutal in a way.

Expletives, bad language (foul mouthed actors), graphic content in Bulbbul:

Though there are no expletives except for one or two M….F….rs… here and there, some killing scenes and the rape scene can be a bit too graphic for some.

Bulbbul, one line review: What you can take home:

Well, if nothing else, then you will definitely take home an improved image of a ‘Chudail’ and maybe even fall in love with her.

Should you watch Bulbbul

Don’t miss the movie for anything. It is worth your time and money. Some of you would still not like it for being a slow and predictable script, but you will definitely like the way the age old ‘Chudail’ has been reinvented to give her a new sense of purpose.

Without giving spoilers, watch for the climax scene in the movie and you will know what to lookout for.
