Navi Mumbai:  The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has found six positive cases of bird flu from the samples that were collected from Ghansoli and Mahape, and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV). The samples were taken immediately after a confirmed case of bird death infected with H5N1, or Avian Influenza, was reported.

On receiving the reports, the Thane Collector ordered for the culling of more than 250 birds within a 1 km radius of the positive zone in Ghansoli and Mahape. He has further ordered the screening of poultry all handlers and a thorough sanitisation of the area.

The NMMC Commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, has advised Navi Mumbai residents to be careful when handling raw chicken, and wear gloves if possible. In either case, it is advisable to wash hands thoroughly after washing and cutting raw chicken or other poultry, just like they have been doing throughout the pandemic.
