Revised metro timetable for Belapur-Pendhar Line to enhance peak hour connectivity

by Abhitash Singh January 18, 2025
written by Abhitash Singh

Navi Mumbai’s Metro Line No. 1, which connects Belapur to Pendhar, is set to introduce a revised timetable starting on January 20, 2025. The new schedule aims to address growing commuter demand, with metro trains operating every 10 minutes during peak hours. This adjustment comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency and accessibility of the city’s rapidly expanding metro network.

Since its launch in November 2023, the Belapur-Pendhar line has garnered significant ridership, primarily due to its strategic connectivity to key areas such as CBD Belapur, the Taloja Industrial Area, and CIDCO‘s housing complexes. The line’s success in attracting passengers has highlighted the need for more frequent services, particularly during the busiest times of the day.

The revised timetable introduces metro services starting at 6:00 AM from both Belapur and Pendhar stations. During peak hours, trains will run every 10 minutes between 7:30 AM and 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM from Belapur, and between 7:00 AM and 9:30 AM and 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM from Pendhar. Outside of these periods, services will operate every 15 minutes.

While the timetable revision addresses a significant need for faster and more frequent services, local commuters may still wonder if the new frequency will sufficiently alleviate the often crowded conditions during peak times. The success of this timetable revision in improving commuter experience remains to be fully seen as the metro continues to grow in both popularity and coverage.

In any case, the revision marks a positive step towards providing more efficient public transport, particularly as Navi Mumbai’s infrastructure continues to evolve to meet the demands of its expanding population. CIDCO, as the driving force behind the development of Navi Mumbai Metro Line No. 1, has played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life. As the city’s first fully operational metro line, Metro Line No. 1 is now poised to offer even greater convenience to daily commuters, further cementing its position as a key element in CIDCO’s broader strategy to enhance Navi Mumbai’s transport network.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sri Sri Radha Madanmohanji Temple at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday, 15 Jan 2025, a significant development spearheaded by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The expansive nine-acre complex includes a temple dedicated to multiple deities, a Vedic education centre, an auditorium, and a healing centre, with plans for future museums.

During the ceremony, the Prime Minister also participated in the temple’s puja and spoke of the importance of ISKCON’s contribution to spreading knowledge and devotion. He expressed his gratitude to the organisation’s saints and priests for their dedication in bringing the project to fruition.

PM Modi to inaugurate ISKCON Kharghar today: Traffic restrictions and diversions to be aware of

by Vishal TM January 15, 2025
written by Vishal TM

The residents of Kharghar prepare to witness a mega spiritual event, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to inaugurate the ISKCON Temple today, Wednesday, 15 January 2025. The event, expected to attract thousands of devotees, has led to significant traffic diversions and parking restrictions in the surrounding areas, as confirmed by local authorities.

Traffic Diversions and Route Closures

According to a notification from the Navi Mumbai Traffic Department, several key routes will be restricted for regular vehicles to facilitate the smooth flow of VIPs and emergency services. These include the roads from Ove Gaon Police Chowki to J. Kumar Circle, the stretch from Gurudwara Chowk to J. Kumar Circle via B.D. Somani School, and the area between Gate No. 1 and Gate No. 2 of the ISKCON temple.

The Traffic Department has urged citizens to cooperate and follow the instructions issued, stressing that vehicles related to essential services, such as fire brigade and ambulance vehicles, would be exempt from the restrictions.

Alternative Routes for Local Commuters

For those affected by the diversions, several alternative routes have been provided:

  • Vehicles travelling from Prashant Corner to Ove Gaon Police Chowki or J. Kumar Circle can divert right near Prashant Corner.
  • Those heading from Shilp Chowk to J. Kumar Circle can take a right or left turn at Green Heritage Chowk.
  • Commuters coming from Gramvikas Bhavan can turn left at Green Heritage Chowk or proceed towards B.D. Somani School for alternate paths.

These diversions are expected to reduce congestion and ensure uninterrupted access for those attending the inauguration ceremony.

No Parking Zones and Further Restrictions

In addition to road closures, several ‘No Parking’ zones will be enforced. These include major stretches like Hiranandani Bridge Junction to Utsav Chowk, parts of the Ove Gaon area, and around the ISKCON temple itself. Residents and commuters have been advised not to park in these zones to avoid any disruptions.

While these measures might cause inconvenience to some, they are essential to maintain security and safety for the high-profile event. The local police have requested the cooperation of the public to ensure smooth traffic flow.

Community Perspective

While these arrangements are crucial for such a large-scale event, many local residents are left questioning the impact of these disruptions on their daily routines. For those who live and work near Kharghar, dealing with detours and limited parking can be quite frustrating. However, there’s a larger sentiment that the arrival of PM Modi and the opening of the ISKCON temple will benefit the community, enhancing the cultural and spiritual fabric of Navi Mumbai. Local residents hope that these inconveniences will be temporary and that the long-term benefits, including a boost to tourism and community activities, will outweigh the disruption. Locals have warmly welcomed PM Modi as his visit always comes with the repairing of battered roads in the locality and top-level cleaning activities by the corporation!

NMMC launches ‘Aapli Navi Mumbai – Aapla Budget’: Invites public suggestions for 2025-26 Budget

by Vishal TM January 12, 2025
written by Vishal TM

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), led by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, has opened a new initiative titled ‘Aapli Navi Mumbai – Aapla Budget’, or, ‘Our Navi Mumbai – Our Budget’, encouraging citizens and organisations to participate in the formulation of the city’s budget for the financial year 2025-2026. This initiative aims to ensure that the budget aligns with the aspirations and needs of the local community, offering residents an opportunity to contribute their ideas for the city’s growth and development.

Dr. Shinde emphasised that the move is part of the city’s broader goal to maintain high-quality urban services and amenities while fostering public involvement. He noted that Navi Mumbai has developed a sense of pride among its residents, with many eager to see their city grow into an even more modern, beautiful, and citizen-friendly place.

The NMMC is calling for suggestions from various sectors, including healthcare, law, real estate, sports, and social organisations supporting the differently-abled, senior citizens, and backward communities. By gathering input from a wide array of sources, the city hopes to create a budget that serves the entire population.

Residents can submit their suggestions by visiting the NMMC headquarters or through digital platforms such as the NMMC website (https://www.nmmc.gov.in/navimumbai/feedback) and the My NMMC mobile app. The deadline for submissions is set for January 17, with the corporation promising to thoroughly review all contributions and involve relevant stakeholders in discussing the most beneficial ideas.

This initiative raises an important question: will the inclusion of citizen input lead to more effective and responsive development? For residents who have long felt disconnected from decision-making processes, this move could be seen as a crucial step toward a more engaged and transparent governance model.

Note: The official link provided for the feedback (https://www.nmmc.gov.in/navimumbai/feedback) seems to be broken as per current update. However, there is another link that could possibly be the correct link (https://www.nmmc.gov.in/feedback). LocalPress will connect with the NMMC and share an update on it shortly.

Leopard spotted in Kharghar Hills: Residents urged to stay cautious

Leopard spotted in Kharghar Hills: Residents urged to stay cautious

by Vishal TM January 10, 2025
written by Vishal TM

Kharghar Hills, a popular destination for families, trekkers, and nature enthusiasts near Navi Mumbai, has become the centre of concern after a leopard was spotted in the area. The animal was caught on CCTV footage on the night of 5 January, prompting immediate action from authorities.

The footage, which was on CCTVs installed by Cidco on the road leading to Fanaswadi, shows the adult leopard emerging from dense vegetation and walking along the hillside path. This sighting marks the first confirmed appearance of a leopard in this particular stretch, and it has raised alarms about the safety of the area.

Following the sighting, local authorities have quickly installed warning banners along the hill stretch, urging both residents and visitors to exercise caution. The location of the sighting initially caused confusion, with some suggesting it had occurred in Kalamboli. However, after a thorough investigation over two days, officials confirmed that the leopard was indeed seen in Kharghar Hills, which stretches from Parsik Hill towards the outskirts of Thane district.

There have also been unconfirmed reports of leopard cubs in the area, further raising concerns among locals. Environmentalists point to possible habitat degradation and deforestation as factors pushing wildlife, including leopards, into increasingly urbanised spaces.

Although no pugmarks were found, forest officers corroborated the sighting with testimonies from security guards stationed near the area. Despite this, the leopard’s presence has prompted calls for heightened vigilance.

Forest officials are advising people to avoid the area, particularly solo trekkers and families with children. While it’s not yet clear whether the leopard sighting is an isolated incident or a sign of an ongoing issue, the potential danger posed by wildlife in the region cannot be underestimated.

As authorities continue to investigate the situation, residents and visitors are urged to stay informed and be cautious when visiting the Kharghar Hills, particularly in areas where wildlife is known to roam. With growing concerns about the encroachment of wild animals into populated areas, this serves as a timely reminder to always prioritise safety and heed official warnings.

In today’s dynamic food industry, sustainability and ethical considerations are key drivers of innovation. Leading this transformative movement is Biokraft Foods, a biotech startup operating out of Mumbai. We had the opportunity to speak with Kamalnayan Tibrewal, the visionary CEO of Biokraft Foods. He shared his insights on the company’s mission to produce cultivated meat, the progress they’ve made, and the broader implications for the food industry. Here’s an in-depth look at Biokraft’s journey and the future of cultivated meat.

Personal and Professional Background

LocalPress: Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue your career?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: I come from a background in biotech and green technology, with a degree from ICT Mumbai. Early on, I was deeply fascinated by how technology could transform the food industry. The inspiration for pursuing cultivated meat came from a desire to address traditional meat production’s environmental and ethical challenges. Seeing the potential for 3D bioprinting to create sustainable, cruelty-free meat made me realise this was more than a career path—it was a chance to drive meaningful change.

LocalPress: What were some of the key milestones in your professional journey?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: Launching Biokraft Foods was a significant milestone. Completing the internal market validation for our cultivated chicken meat product and opening it up for external validation in collaboration with hotels and cafes were pivotal moments. Being invited to forums like Anuga FoodTech India as an expert panellist and collaborating with ICAR-DCFR on cultivated trout development have also been the highlights. These milestones affirm that we’re on the right track to making a real impact.

Vision and Impact

LocalPress: What is the vision that drives you in your work?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: My vision is to create a world where sustainable, ethical meat is accessible to all without compromising on taste or quality. I want Biokraft Foods to lead the way in cultivated meat technology and help solve global challenges like food security, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability.

LocalPress: How do you think your work has impacted your field or community?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: Our work is helping normalise the idea of cultivated meat in India. We’re bridging the technology and consumer acceptance gap through awareness, tasting sessions, and partnerships. We inspire young food technologists and entrepreneurs to explore innovative, sustainable solutions.

Challenges and Triumphs

LocalPress: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced along the way, and how did you overcome them?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: Developing cultivated meat in a nascent ecosystem like India comes with challenges—funding, technology development, regulatory hurdles, and consumer skepticism. Overcoming these has required persistence, collaboration with the right partners, and constant innovation. We focused on iterative testing, gathering feedback, and staying resilient.

LocalPress: Can you share a particular moment of triumph that stood out in your career?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: A standout moment was seeing people taste our cultivated chicken meat for the first time and watching their reactions. The positive feedback during our internal market validation and the excitement of external collaborators made all the hard work worthwhile.

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: Balancing a startup with a personal life is challenging, but I try to carve out time for family and personal interests. Delegating effectively and setting boundaries helps me stay present, whether I’m at work or home.

Psyche and Approach

LocalPress: How would you describe your approach to overcoming obstacles and handling stress?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: I believe in taking challenges one step at a time and focusing on solutions rather than problems. Mindfulness practices, clear thinking, and support from my team help me manage stress and stay motivated.

LocalPress: What are some traits or habits that you believe have contributed to your success?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: Curiosity, resilience, and adaptability are key traits. I also practice continuous learning and keep an open mind to new ideas and feedback. Building strong, meaningful connections has been crucial to my journey.

Likes and Dislikes

LocalPress: What do you enjoy most about your work, and what aspects do you find challenging?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: I love the opportunity to innovate and contribute to something that could reshape the future of food. The most challenging part is navigating uncharted territory, but that’s also what makes it exciting.

LocalPress: Are there any specific practices or routines that help you stay productive and motivated?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: I start my day with a clear plan and prioritise tasks. Regular check-ins with the team, short breaks to reset, and celebrating small wins keep me productive. Staying connected to our vision also fuels my motivation.

Vision for the Future

LocalPress: What are your goals and aspirations for the future?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: I aim to see Biokraft Foods become a leader in cell-based food production in India and globally. We aim to scale production, enter new markets and continuously innovate to make cultivated meat accessible and affordable.

LocalPress: How do you see your field evolving, and what role do you hope to play in that evolution?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: The cultivated meat field will expand rapidly as technology advances and consumer awareness grows. I plan to contribute by pushing the boundaries of innovation, collaborating with industry leaders, and making cultivated meat a mainstream choice.

Advice for Others

LocalPress: What advice would you give to others who are facing similar struggles or aiming to achieve similar success?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: Stay persistent, believe in your vision, and be open to learning. Surround yourself with people who support and challenge you. Challenges are part of the journey—embrace them as opportunities to grow.

LocalPress: Is there a mantra or philosophy that you live by and would recommend to others?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: “Progress over perfection.” Taking action and making incremental progress is more valuable than waiting for everything to be perfect.

Growth Graph

LocalPress: Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently in your journey till now?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: I believe every experience has shaped me, but perhaps I would have sought mentorship and collaborations even earlier. Building the right network is invaluable for a startup.

LocalPress: How have your experiences shaped your outlook on life and work?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: My experiences have taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and maintaining a clear sense of purpose. They’ve also shown me that meaningful connections and collaborative efforts can accelerate progress.

Closing Thoughts

LocalPress: Any final thoughts or messages you would like to share with our readers?

Kamalnayan Tibrewal: The future of food is being shaped right now, and each of us can play a role in making it sustainable. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, consumer, or investor, supporting innovative solutions can drive positive change. Stay curious, stay committed, and let’s build a better future together.

Basic rules for soil preparation and improvement

by Staff Reporter January 3, 2025
written by Staff Reporter

Soil is the lifeblood of any garden. Without proper soil preparation, even the best-selected plants can struggle to survive. By investing time and effort in preparing and improving your garden’s soil, you can ensure that your plants get the nutrients and structure they need to grow strong and healthy.

1. Test Your Soil’s pH

Understanding the pH of your soil is crucial. Some plants prefer acidic soil, while others thrive in alkaline conditions. You can test your soil’s pH with a simple kit from a garden store. Adjust the pH if necessary by adding lime to raise it or sulfur to lower it.

2. Add Organic Matter

Organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure improves soil structure, aerates the soil, and increases its water-holding capacity. It also feeds the beneficial microorganisms that help plants absorb nutrients. Incorporate 2-4 inches of organic matter into the topsoil annually to boost soil health.

3. Loosen Compacted Soil

Compacted soil can suffocate plant roots by reducing air and water movement. Use a garden fork or tiller to break up compacted areas, especially in heavy clay soils. This will improve drainage and make it easier for roots to penetrate the soil.

4. Improve Drainage in Heavy Soils

Clay-heavy soils can hold too much water, drowning plant roots. To improve drainage, add coarse sand or organic matter. Raised beds are also a great option for managing drainage in poorly draining areas.

5. Mulch to Protect Soil

Mulching with organic materials like straw, leaves, or wood chips helps retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and adds nutrients to the soil as it breaks down. Apply a 2-3 inch layer around plants, but keep it away from stems to prevent rot.

Pro Tip: Avoid walking on freshly tilled or amended soil to prevent compaction. Lay down stepping stones or pathways to protect soil structure.

Navi Mumbai Airport sees first commercial flight: Indigo A320 marks historic landing
FeaturedInfrastructureNews

Navi Mumbai Airport welcomes its first commercial flight: Indigo A320

by Staff Reporter December 29, 2024
written by Staff Reporter

On Sunday, 29 December 2025, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) reached a pivotal milestone as it welcomed its first-ever commercial flight; an Indigo A320. The aircraft made history by successfully landing on the newly constructed runway 08/26 at the airport. This event signals a crucial step forward in the development of what will soon be one of India’s largest international aviation hubs.

A trial flight with big implications

The landing, part of a planned trial testing programme, was a key part of NMIA’s journey toward becoming operational by early 2025. The flight, departing from Mumbai Airport, was managed initially by the Mumbai Air Traffic Control (ATC). As the aircraft neared the new airport, the approach was handed over to the Navi Mumbai ATC tower once the plane was within 5 nautical miles and at 1,500 feet. This seamless transfer marks a major success in air traffic management, a critical element for the smooth operation of any airport.

This first landing also highlights the airport’s capacity to handle complex air traffic, aided by the design of its parallel runways, which allows for greater efficiency in managing high traffic volumes.

Indigo Airlines leads the charge

Of particular note is that it was Indigo Airlines—India’s largest and most successful low-cost carrier—that made history by landing the first commercial flight. In an era where multiple airlines are vying for prominence in the Indian aviation sector, it was Indigo that took this pioneering step. This landmark event underscores the airline’s continued dominance in India’s domestic market and its role in shaping the future of aviation in the country.

Fueling the Future: Key operational milestones

Following the successful trial flight, the Navi Mumbai International Airport continues to take key steps towards becoming fully operational. NMIAL recently issued a request for proposals for the supply of aviation turbine fuel (JET A-1) to support testing activities at the airport’s fuel farm. This is a vital component of the airport’s operational readiness as it prepares to open.

Alongside fuel preparations, the airport has also completed calibration of its Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) system—an essential component that ensures pilots maintain the correct glide slope while landing. With the PAPI system now operational, the south runway is one step closer to facilitating the airport’s first official flight trials.

Increased confidence with runway tests

In October 2024, the Indian Air Force (IAF) also conducted a successful landing of a C-295 aircraft on the south runway. This test, designed to assess runway conditions, air traffic control systems, and taxiway procedures, further validated the airport’s infrastructure. Together with this recent commercial flight, the successful trials indicate the airport is progressing rapidly toward its official operational launch.

Navi Mumbai Airport: A vision for the future

Once completed, Navi Mumbai International Airport will stand as a major global aviation hub, with a projected annual capacity of 60 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo. This greenfield airport project, which began construction in August 2021, is designed to alleviate congestion at Mumbai’s existing airport and serve as a critical gateway to India’s growing international travel market.

With a focus on sustainability, the airport will integrate energy-efficient systems, waste management solutions, and eco-friendly passenger transport options, ensuring that it meets modern environmental standards. This focus on sustainability will set a benchmark for future airports worldwide.

Looking ahead

As the Navi Mumbai International Airport moves closer to full operation, the successful landing of the Indigo A320 represents just the beginning of a new era in India’s aviation landscape. With its combination of state-of-the-art infrastructure and sustainability, NMIA is poised to transform the region’s air travel industry and provide a significant boost to the economy. With the first commercial flight now in the books, the countdown to the airport’s official opening is well underway.

Residents celebrate, yet remain curious

The successful landing of the first commercial flight at Navi Mumbai International Airport has sparked immense excitement among locals, who have long awaited an airport in the city. Residents are hopeful that the airport will boost connectivity and create new opportunities, not to mention price action for property investments in the region. However, there is also a sense of curiosity, with many wondering if the airport will live up to the high expectations set by its ambitious plans. “It’s a dream come true, but we’ll see if it lives up to the hype,” said one local resident.
