Navi Mumbai / Nerul: The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd (Cidco) has once again managed to irk environmentalists by chopping down more than 700 trees on a plot located at the Palm Beach Road. CIDCO however claims to have not violated any law.
Apparently, there are two pockets, D and E, in sector 60, that CIDCO informs, are free of any litigation or court restraint of the Bombay high court, as environmentalists and residents claim. Hence, the chopping of trees cannot be held as an act of violation against anyone. They claim that CIDCO, also being the tree authority for the area, has taken the necessary permissions to go ahead with the chopping.
Residents have a different story altogether as they believe that CIDCO has been trying best to usurp the two pockets for real estate gains even when the plots are an integral part of the proposed golf course and the 17 residential towers coming up at the place. In the past too, CIDCO is said to have mislead people into believing that the two pockets were not included in the project. However, they were not able to get the environment clearance as environmentalist approached a government committee to look into the matter.
City environmentalists are now gearing up to move court against CIDCO and the private builder who has been part of the axing that took place with a pending case in Supreme Court.
