Samples were taken from Ghansoli and Mahape and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.
Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has found six positive cases of bird flu from the samples that were collected from Ghansoli and Mahape, and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV). The samples were taken immediately after a confirmed case of bird death infected with H5N1, or Avian Influenza, was reported.
On receiving the reports, the Thane Collector ordered for the culling of more than 250 birds within a 1 km radius of the positive zone in Ghansoli and Mahape. He has further ordered the screening of poultry all handlers and a thorough sanitisation of the area.
The NMMC Commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, has advised Navi Mumbai residents to be careful when handling raw chicken, and wear gloves if possible. In either case, it is advisable to wash hands thoroughly after washing and cutting raw chicken or other poultry, just like they have been doing throughout the pandemic.

People, who consume chicken and eggs on a regular basis, can continue eating, provided they cook those over 70 degrees Celsius.

Also, people have been advised not to come in close contact of dead birds or touch them in any case. All such sightings should be immediately brought to the notice of the civic administration.
The frequency of tests and culling is predicted to gain momentum as new cases come to light.
