PMC won under the 1-10 lakh population category, grading the participation of its citizens in various activities under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Panvel: The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) had a proud moment when they were ranked number one under the special category – Citizens’ Outstanding Participation, which took into account the willing and effective participation of citizens in activities during the Swachh Survekshan 2021, under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Also, the PMC received a three-star rating by the Central Government in the “Waste Free City” category, this year.
The awards were handed out on 20th November 2021, at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, by the Union Minister for Urban Development and Housing, Hardeep Singh Puri, in the presence of several prominent guests like President Ramnath Kovind, CM of Chhattisgarh – Bhupesh Baghel, CM of Sikkim – Premsingh Tamang, Deputy Governor of Andaman and Nicobar State, and Union Secretary Durga Prasad Mishra.
PMC Mayor Dr. Kavita Chautmol, accepted the award on behalf of the Panvel Municipal Corporation, in the presence of PMC Commissioner Ganesh Deshmukh, Deputy Mayor Jagdish Gaikwad, Leader of the House Paresh Thakur, Leader of Opposition Pritam Mhatre, Women and Child Welfare Speaker Monica Mahanwar, Deputy Commissioner Sachin Pawar, Ganesh Shete, Assistant Commissioner Dr. Vaibhav Vidhate, corporator Ganesh Kadu and others.
For those who are unaware, the Citizens’ Outstanding Participation award is a special category introduced by the Central Government which takes into account, the manner and amount of public participation in fulfilling the objectives of the civic bodies under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, for the overall cleanliness and waste management of the city.
The PMC ranked 27th under the 1 to 10 lakh population category, and 6th in the state of Maharashtra, while the NMMC came 1st in the “Cleanest Big Cities” category and 4th in the overall ranking, one point lower than last year’s ranking of number 3.
The NMMC also carried a five-star rating as compared to PMC’s three-star.

Out of the total 4320 participating cities in the Swachh Survekshan 2021, a total of 143 received a three-star rating.
During the Swachh Survey 2021, all the citizens in the PMC area, willingly and enthusiastically participated in various innovative activities like attractive color paintings conveying the message of cleanliness and preservation of the environment, recycling and upcycling of waste, bicycle rallies for creating awareness, increased use of Google Maps to locate public toilets in the city and other such activities.
The PMC Commissioner, Ganesh Deshmukh, expressed his earnest thankfulness towards the citizens and all staff.
“It is a proud moment for all the citizens and I am very pleased by the joint efforts of everyone – citizens, staff, people’s representatives, cleanliness workers and all involved. The Panvel Municipal Corporation is honoured by the genuine efforts and dedication of the citizens for their huge contribution in winning us this title,” Deshmukh said.
The PMC now aims at a much higher ranking with the increased participation of the citizens during Swachh Survekshan 2022.
”We will strive to rank in the top 10 cleanest cities in the country in Swachh Survekshan 2022, with a five-star rating as well, with increased participation of the citizens, people’s representatives and administrative staff,” Deshmukh said confidently.
